No, I've never seen one of those. I've seen other "steel" vises, I thought about a few of them. Pretty cool!

I've seen a few vises like that that have been fabrictaed from welded and formed sheet stock. Most currently available ones seem to be manufactured in Asia. There are a number of companies that offer an offset fabricated sheet-steel vise that's similar. The listing for the Westward version on the Grainger website says the COO is India.

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/WESTWARD-Bench-Vise-3FDJ8

I believe the same company also manufactures a regular bench vise using the same techniques.

Yost offers a few Stainless steel bench vises that's also manufactured from welded sheet stock. I'm not sure were it's made but it is imported.

Here's one I saw on eBay... Never seen the aeroplane theme taken to such an extreme...

Lets take a poll!

How many of you think this vise was made in Cleveland, Ohio?

If it's from the 70's like he claims, my guess is probably Japan or *maybe* Taiwan... It's probably stamped on the bottom of the swivel base, which is why we don't see any pictures of it... ;)

It looks like someone gave it a quick once-over with a fine grit sandpaper to remove most of the surface rust. You can see the high spots are shiny but the low spots & nicks are all rust.

If someone had a budget up to $1,000 and was surfing eBay, you would think they would choose a 6" or 8" Wilton.... *rolleyes*

Ever since eBay removed the listing fees, it's become more like Craigslist. They just set a crazy high price and let it sit for six months before they finally give up and remove the listing.

Looks like my Allied. Made in China stuff - to my understanding there are multiple manufactures of this same vise. They have bondo or something covering them under the paint to mask up cast imperfections and such. Due to the nature of the vise - they can be handy for when you need to hold stuff at odd-angles and such, but keep in mind that even though they're like 85lbs - they're only suited for light-duty work. Did you buy it  I think just the look would be worth the price of admission. That could be painted like an airplane for a crazy finished look.

FYI, I'm not bidding on the airplane vise (not my style), but you guys might want to figure out beforehand if someone here is going to bid on it or not so you aren't bidding each other up... ;)

Going by the pic it's hard to believe it's 14" long and 36lbs. Looks like a little 10 lb'er to me especially with the open lead screw.:dunno:

:lol_hitti That's why I ask you when I sent the PM I'd pay $50 just to have it and paint it as an airplane.

What say you?

After seeing the stuff from the Colorado stash and several PMs and emails, I would up with the Canedy Otto vise that was posted a few pages back. It's a 4" jaw, and is the "big brother" to my other Canedy Otto vise (2 1/2" jaws). Interesting to see similar casting flaws in both of them. It's a nice vise, about 27 pounds or so. Maybe this will give me the motivation to get them cleaned up and back in use.

One more Canedy Otto pic.
Does anyone else have a Canedy Otto vise? I don't see them all that often.

Glad to see you picked up that C. Otto from Maclin. It was a cool looking vise and even stood out among the other 100+ vises in Golden. Regards, Mark

Hey Mark, Thanks for helping out with making it happen, I appreciate it.
And thanks to Gregg for selling it to me (and for the great packing & shipping)!

Mark thanks for letting me be part of the Golden pile. You have energized me. I have categorized every vise but this one. It is missing the swivel base, if I can get my hands on a big enough piece of steel then I will build one. Can anyone identify who made this 7" swivel jaw vise, getting that hammered pin out will be fun. Yea it has seen better days but I think even if I add replaceable jaws it will be a nice heavy vise. if anyone can help I would appreciate it. There is at least three coats of paint so maybe it is hiding text that is indented but no text is raised. Thanks in advance.
Kevin

You are welcome Jon. Glad the Canedy Otto is in the hands of someone that will enjoy and use it. Good power in a moderate size on the bench. Great matched pair.

Looks like a Prentiss to me. Below is a pic of my early-style Prentiss No 3 that has the label on top by the pin before they moved it to the side.

Kevin, Thanks again for having an interest in the Golden pile. I'm sure Dave is looking down and is pleased to see his 30 years of collecting going to people that can appreciate it.
I checked out that monster vise for markings myself, and I never found a thing. If anyone can figure it out and bring it back, it's you. Good Luck

Going to agree. Have a similar 4" version of this same vise. Has all the hallmarks of a Prentiss. Didn't know there was a 7" version, so this is a treat. Thanks for sharing!

Finished my other Wilton. I like the blue personally. I am going to do white lettering, I just may need a better paint pen or I'll have to do three coats. Before and after of both even though I already lit up pictures of the 845.

That blue looks great, what color and brand is it? It looks like the color I want to paint my Morgan's.
Nice job on both!

Here you go. I did this blue on a Wilton 400 as well I got rid of a year ago. Absolutely loved it then and still love the color.

Here is the 400 I completed last year in the same blue.

This was probably the worst restore I had to do because of all the enamel paint it had on it.

That looks a lot like the Rustoleum professional "Safety Blue". Black goes well with it, but I'm sure white would look nice too...

Maybe I will try black. That looks nice.

I will certainly do black for my gray vise. I think white is OK with the blue...but black does look better. Last picture from me for awhile. I need to stop spamming this thread, lol. At least until my next resto.
