Group Buy on Underhood Light?

Do you guys think a vendor would offer us a discounted group buy on an underhood light, preferably US made? And, would there be interest in such an event?

I'm talking about the long lights that you secure to the underside of the hood to illuminate the entire engine bay.

I would be interested depending on price. Tool funds are WAY down right now from getting into a lot of new things. But a real underhood light would be a nice upgrade to my homemade version!

I was thinking this morning about why we don't do more group buys? With over 20k active members on the site, a lot of whom are tool-obsessed, I don't see how we would not be an appealing group to retailers.

I don't think we are flexing our muscle enough.

That is a helluva good idea.

It would probably need to be items that were a) expensive enough to bother, b) could be dropped shipped from a single place rather than redistributed, and c) hard to get.

I, for one, would love to buy a set of good European jackstands. An AC Hydraulic hoist. etc. Small hand tools are a tougher sale since they can be so heavily discounted in just the normal state of things.

Personally, I would want corded, and fluorescent over LED.

I have a national electric corded flourescent one at work. Awsome best tool i ever bought. Mine is us made also. I have two flourescents and one led but i would be intreasted depending on price

I'd be interesting depending on the details.

For an underhood light, I'd probably vote corded. not trying to move it around all the time with the cord getting in the way and don't have to deal with batteries going dead all the time.

Honestly i hate my battery operated one it dies in a few hours. So if ur doing head gaskets or pulling a engine it dies not even half way though. And its typically dead everytime u pick it up unless you charge it all the time. For the occasional user or pro user corded is ol reliable and always ready to work. Stay away from the battery ones your only gonna end up plugging it in anyway while ur using it.

Personally, I would want corded, and fluorescent over LED.

Yeah, you definitely want corded and flourescent. The cordless LED lights aren't bright, cast a funny light color that makes it hard to discern wire colors and the run time on a charge *****.

I'd be in but I already have one.

Totally interested in fluorescent and corded
Not at all interested in gimmicky LEDs, and not at all interested in rechargeable.

So, any suggestions on a vendor to approach? I see that places like Tooltopia have them, but I don't know if that is the kind of place that will deal with a bunch of forum guys. I will e-mail them, though.

I already looked at Zoro, since we have a relationship with them, but they don't carry these.

Just another shameless plug for corded flourescent. I took these at work today. Continuous bright light and you can distinguish wire colors. No battery shitting the bed halfway through the job.

Good question. USA versions seem to be available in a couple places for $100-115 shipped.

I know that a group buy discount will depend on how many folks participate. I'd love to see the light under $100 shipped, and by that I do not mean $99.99.

But I don't know how much markup there is on them in the first place.

I've been using the Central Tools light for about 7 years in my home shop.
It is very well made and the power cord is very long......

Note: There is no "ON/OFF" switch. You plug it in a power outlet, and it comes on....

Can the bulb on the Central Tools 13003 be replaced?

One reviewer of the National Electric 30025 mentioned that it is difficult to replace the bulb. That is, if true, a big drawback for me.

I just sent an e-mail to Tooltopia to see if they'd be willing to work with us on this.

I think if you are going to do it, you need to ask the vendor to just have a sale to GJ members. It would have to be a vendor that does mail order, and capable of shipping to many addresses. You could most likely get a bigger price break if somebody was willing to have them all shipped to a certain address and then distributed out. Before I did that I would make sure that they were all paid for somehow, because having more than one or two is not needed.

By reading the post many are interested, but the sentence of depends on cost from many, would bother me about going to far out on a limb. I would guess that to get a quality one, the best you would be able to do is get 10-15% off. If they retail at $110, you are still at $90 plus. Add shipping and it looks like many would not want one at that price.

Now if you could reach out to the manufacturer, and bypass a few middle man then you may get a better deal.

I own two, a corded and a rechargeable one. They each have there place, as with any tool. If you work under the hood of a car you should have one.

I'll see if I can find an e-mail address for the manufacturer directly; I anticipate that they will tell me that they don't sell directly to the public.

If people won't buy them at a discounted group rate, then I guess they won't ever buy them, since I don't see these particular types of lights going on crazy sales.
