So instead of high jacking others threads I thought is was time to start my own garage thread…

About me:
Growing up my dad was a semi-mechanic, he was never trained and he figured it out as he went… for a while he would buy and sell cars… usually cars with a broken time chain or other disaster… He would always throw way more money into a car than he ever got out, so at some point my mom put an end to that hobby of his. I spent a lot of weekends in junk yards helping him look for parts and my Pops knew the name of every employee at NAPA auto parts store, cause he was in there daily… So I learned a lot from him growing up good and bad… I never saw him use a torque wrench and he fell in love the day he found J&B weld and used it to hold many cars together. So that was my training. I unfortunately never took shop class and really enjoyed becoming a DIY’er all of my education comes from reading threads and Youtube videos and even some books here and there.

What made me begin my garage build started while I was looking at another website reading about all the modifications people were doing to their 4runners to make them more capable off road vehicles. (((and even some to prepare for the zombie apocalypse :eyecrazy:))) Through my readings on that site I decided to lift my truck but in order to justify the cost of doing that I decided I would do it myself to save on the install cost… So I read lots of threads and began buying all the specialized tools for the job and treated it like studying for an exam… When it came time to do the job I encountered several problems…. one of the spacers was machined with a high lip so that was easily corrected with a round file that I didn't have… so I ran out to get one… then I needed to drill holes into the frame for the shock reservoirs and my little royal cordless drill couldn’t come close to making the holes so I had to run out and borrow a corded drill… So I finished the lift after several trips to the store and a few to my friends house… So long story longer I expanded my prefabricated Cressent tool box into a hand me down craftsman rolling chest… then a nice bench from sam’s club with a nice matching rolling cart and stool… Completing that project was so satisfying to do it on my own and I decided to continue down the addicting road of modification on my truck… and with each modification I needed to learn a few new skills and with that skill comes the needed tools… and as I began to collect more tools I search the web for methods to organize those tools I found this website and have been hooked ever since…

So here is some pics of how it began....

First rolling tool box hand-me-down...
ry%3D400

A little sanding and painting...
ry%3D400

Then came the bench
ry%3D400

all together...
ry%3D400

A little paint to match the craftsman theme...
ry%3D400

gotta have a vise... If only I had found the thread on vintage vises first.. but I still like it....
ry%3D400

and then I was done... so I thought...

Then I found stevo's bench build thread and really like the design and I wanted to learn to weld but had nothing to weld soooo why not... I learned on this project maybe start off making a paper towel holder or a paper weight as your first welding project not a huge bench... but I will say I got lots of welding practice with how many times I had to cut it apart and start over... at least you know if you have good penetration on your welds when you have to cut it apart several times :dunno:

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

not so easy to test fit without having a fork lift the box in...
ry%3D400

looks good to me... oh wait maybe not...
ry%3D400

and there it is bad measuring on my part... I don't find the welding part as difficult as the measuring and compensating for shrinkage and warping etc... so much to learn...
ry%3D400

temporary defeat...
ry%3D400

starting over...
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

didn't fit :dunno:again... starting over:willy_nil...
ry%3D400

I had originally planned to leave a hole between cabinets to push chair in like a desk or jack Olsen newest bench... but after not having my garage for a month i decided to simplify my borrowed design to get it completed...

test fit went well and worked... my back wasn't a fan of doing the test fit... time for paint...
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

all done?
ry%3D400

more paint...
ry%3D400

painted and done...
ry%3D400

Then....A fellow GJ'er neighbor stopped by to say hi and inspect my work and said "hey you got yourself a run right here.." I say yeah but its just a garage bench doesn't matter its going to get messed up..." then he said "oh come on you put this much work into it might as well do it right?" then he left and I sat there staring at the run in the paint and thought about it... then I made the terrible mistake of sanding the now two spots I found while the paint wasn't completely dry so it just smeared the paint and looked terrible, I was so angry... I was so close to done now had to start the paint over... repeat after me "its all part of the learning process...its all part of the learning process"

ry%3D400

drawers done...
ry%3D400

The first back splash wasn't high enough...
ry%3D400

better..
ry%3D400

Then all that was left was to stain the bench top and of course I sanded it too far... and I found out the Oak table slabs , that I picked up at habitat for humanity, that I dreamed were from some ancient oak table that was rich with history was a big phoney:willy_nil

'painting the handles
ry%3D400

at the crossroads... do I stain it? Do I paint it?
ry%3D400

this just wont do...
ry%3D400

so went back to original plan of a solid core door..
ry%3D400

Dropped off steel top diagram at the steel shop to do some bends.
ry%3D400

picked up the 10 gauge bench top from steel shop... And of course it never rains in Vegas but it did the day that it was left in the steel yard... Rain plus bare steel is no good...
ry%3D400

after hours of scrubbing the rust off its done...
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

so bench is done:beer:
still need to find a Wilton vise and mount it and mount the hose reel...

game on...

Ok almost update to date...
picked up a chair the other day off of craiglists...
If its good enough for Jack:dunno:...

ry%3D400

The quote to have the chair reupholstery to black vinyl not even leather was pretty high... at that point might have well gotten a lazy boy to sit in...
ry%3D400

so I found some fabric/vinyl paint to paint it...
ry%3D400

turned out great IMO
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

No place to push my chair into... maybe the next bench :)

Okay my last update... Been on the hunt locally for a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIG Wilton bullet vise... but unfortunately GJ folks are everywhere and they always beat me to any local listing for Lista and Stronghold cabinets and to any vintage vises... but I found this one the other day...
ry%3D400

A little bath in vinegar
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

I really like it bare... but decided to paint
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

it cost me a finger when putting it back together....
ry%3D400

just gotta paint the letters and it will be done....

DIY! Sweet! Simple and useful.
Thanks!

Looking good so far. That Craftsman vise is pretty great, from what I've heard.
Yeah I read a thread on here about how it was pretty good for the price and even better after taking it apart and greasing it.

Nice job on the bench! I've wanted to do that ever since I saw Steevo's. One of these days......................

Nice work..... Put a lot time in on the workbench there

Thanks I appreciate it...
I was a big fan when I saw Jack's 1st bench then found Stevo's bench on steroids and found a size in middle that I could fit in my budget and limited space... Also one issue in my head during the entire build was that I am trying to purchase a new home ((( It has a 3 car garage!!!!!!! which means two cars and the 3rd would be the chop shop:evil:!!!))) so the big issue was that I had to be able to move it in the future.

Great job! Don't you hate when a buddy comes over and points out a small flaw in your work then you just can't help needing to fix it? What's the next project?

Temporary defeat = EPIC

Hahaha thanks. I'll do my best.
You put alot of time and effort into that workbench...But it was well worth all your Work.
It turned out fantastic! Nice Job!
Thanks I am really happy how it turned out... Still think I might have rushed it not separating the cabinets to be able to have push the chair in... But it would have been super long and hard to move to the future garage... Maybe the next one.

Hahaha he's a great neighbor we text each other on great garage finds on Craigslist all the time... I think when he needs a tool and his wife wont let him buy it he sends me the ad to get me to buy it so he can borrow it... Pretty smart move

Next up is 3 or 4 little welding projects to practice then I'll start building my welding table. Just need it to drop under 100 dregrees here.

I'm sorry not much of a computer guy... I just learned how to host pics on another website so I could post them on here.

I love it! Keep it up please. I now know how to make my work bench
Thanks.
If you look up Stevo's bench build (sorry don't have the thread handy at work) he gives you detailed plans of his build and has been more than happy to respond to a billon questions on it.

Oh hey neighbor:beer:

I did forget to mention the part of the build story where the cabinet didn't fit for the 4th or 5th attempt and I began to see red and took a hammer over and over to the top edge of the cabinet to try to get it to fit... thanks for your help fixing that
Nice job on the work bench.

Very nice garage. I applaud your efforts on the bench, the hard work really shows.

Thanks it was a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to some cooler temps and all the projects that will happen on it.

Newest addition to the Garage... Haven't been able to find any of the mythical Strong Hold cabinets on Craigslist starting to think they are like Unicorns... but found this little guy, its pretty heavy duty and it's also OSHA certified... cause you never know when they will stop by the garage to inspect it :dunno:

Sooooo.... the hunt for my massive Wilton bullet continues.... (((I have should have just purchased one on Ebay instead of spending $$$ on several)))
so here's the new Wilton that I got on Craigslist....
ry%3D400

If you notice on the vise it is missing the the numbers on the tape measure strips, its cause when i used simple green to clean the Vise it stripped the paint... that was disappointing but such is life...

then i found this Wilton Bullet the other day and was sooooooo excited... I was at work and had a buddy pick it up for me the pics on Craigslist looked great... after I got it and took a closer look I decided to play a game I call take a shot every time I find a weld on the vise... before I passed out I counted 15 spots..... Okay maybe not but a few spot on the swivel base and unfortunately on the spindle thingy but for a Vise I think is from the 40's it super smooth and still cool to have a piece of history in the garage.
ry%3D400

think the date of the 5year warrenty says 1946? so that means it was made in 1941? but not sure to be honest...
ry%3D400

then I hit it with a wire brush... bare metal is sooo pretty
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

The welds....:scared:
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

paint time
ry%3D400

Hard to tell the color it's the metallic rustoleum color
ry%3D400

The collection grows...
ry%3D400

and last update for the day (kind of)
Got a new Metal peg board was going to mount it but decided to hold off until I hear back on the offer I put in on the new garage (well house with garage) but If I don't hear back soon I am mounting it along with the Hose Reel and Extension cord reel...

Hello just got this Drill Press home tonight... been looking for a drill press for a long while... debating between getting something newer that I know works and is easy to find replacement parts and the nostalgia of a vintage drill press that will out last me...

Great work so far! Be careful with vintage and antique machinery because you could end up with a whole other hobby. I found a great site on machinery linked from this site that ended up getting me hooked on classic American-made machine tools and now I have the beginnings of a small machine shop in my basement, which certainly helps with things above ground, both large and small, but has taken some funding away from the Garage and Barn projects here. It started with a vise and has included a Clausing 8530 mill along with associated tooling, and now centers around the hunt for a Clausing lathe. It is great to preserve the classic American-made tools and machines since they were clearly made with pride and quality back in the day.

Hahaha... This website has led to many addictions... Having an entire machine shop in the basement sounds awesome... I am slowing trying to get my garage ready to restore a vintage bronco... My my funds for the bronco keep getting taken by my tool addiction... It's a vicious cycle :willy_nil

Did some progress on the DP today...
I was thinking about half assing it and just taping it up and spraying... then I found a few threads of restored vintage drill presses and made me rethink my plan of attack... so here goes...

so many crusty wire..
ry%3D400

Made a new friend..
ry%3D400

had to set him on fire since it was covered in eggs and wanted to bite and kill me...
ry%3D400

lots of grinding and scrubbing getting ready for paint... (really need a parts washer)
ry%3D400

Lets see If I ever get humpty dumpty back together again
ry%3D400

getting ready for paint...
ry%3D400

a few coats later...
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

a little closer to done... just need to scrub the dull levers with a Scott bright pad and wd-40 and run new wires from the switch to power box and instal the new cord and lube and resemble...

Oh yeah and my biggest disappointment today besides of course the fact that I brought an egg infested Drill Press into my SUV then into my home was that while trying different mild agents to clean the decal on the front of the drill press it took off the red over-spray paint and also took off the original painted letters... this magnificent drill worked since the 50's and manage to mess it up in one day before and after shots
ry%3D400

and now...
