Craigslist find from this morning. The base is just a sheet of plywood and some uprights. The drawers are blueprint cabinets, and they fully extend. Top is formica with a frame so it locks into place. The whole assembly is 8' wide, 3' deep and the top is 46" tall! My phone is on top in one of the pics for scale. $60 and the guy threw in the small rolling cart - I think I'll repurpose it for a welding cart.

No way! I was thinking the guy saw me coming and I over paid. :lol_hitti. The tools were 2 bucks and the box was a buck. I think the guy felt bad because he told me I could go back to his pile of tools and he would throw in some more if I bought the toolbox. My 2 year old was ready to move on though, wish I would have went and sorted through a little better now! I really wonder what that shaft on the other side is for.

Outlaw, that round aluminum tray should slide right into a 5 gallon bucket. It's great way to haul drill motor, tools, driver, etc at bottom of bucket and the tray at top full of screws, etc.

That score by Rich for $1.50 is crazy . . . . . gotta love that ROI !!! :D

CNG, I checked the bucket fit; nope it's bigger than the mouth of a std bucket...

Well, a week or so later I have the $40.00 hacksaw at home. It's an Armstrong-Blum Marvel #2 draw-cut saw.

Holy cow this thing is heavy. I got my father-in-law to go and me load it with his truck. He gave me a look of pure venom when he saw it and tried to lift one end of it. So I went home to gather an assortment of tools to dismantle it. By the time I got back the previous owner had the top frame and the vise off. The two of us were then able to put it in the back of my wife's car. I still had to have dad help me take the thing out of the car and it was still a struggle. Jesus, this thing weighs a ton.
I hoped to get a picture of it before the breakdown, but this is how it was meant to be. And I don't want to reassemble it until there's a place for it. I did get some history on it. It came from our local fishnet factory here in town that closed down when over regulation began destroying one of many different industries in our state back in the 90's. And fishing was one of them. Then it just sat in the building for years unused until a new company moved in. The guy I got it from works there and they let him take it home.
This thing is in great shape. A layer of oily dust and no rust. The vise alone is worth the money to me. That and it's a local artifact from when Blaine produced more than a shopping destination for the Canadians.

Nice find Sidekic. That looks like a pretty useful makeover. I have a workstation with similiar legs, and the legs don't take much moving to be screwed up. Maybe it doesn't look like it, but I could see it getting some weight in the cabinets and getting bumped and going down like dominos. Not trying to knock your find, but don't want you getting hurt either.

That rat is definetly Snap On with a date code of 1953, but I have no idea what the post/extension is for.

Most definately a Scaffold Ratchet. The post/extension had a rubber knob for smacking the **** out of unwilling scaffold parts.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Snap-on-Ratchet-S-717-Scaffold-Assembly-auto-mechanics-hand-tools-for-sockets-/151111274669?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item232eef10ad

The common size socket is a 7/8" and has a retaining pin to keep the socket from falling off the ratchet.

That's a great find. But I agree with Shephd's comments, I wouldn't trust the support they have under them. We had them when I was working.
Those drawers were designed to hold 34x44" drawings or maps, with about a 3" depth. Paper in bulk is very heavy but not as heavy as tools. Our cabinets were supported by corner [90*] bracket type legs the were about 3/16 or 1/4" thick, 5-6" wide at the top and 3" at the bottom on each side of the leg and were about 15" tall. I saw one that was toppled due to one leg being improperly installed. Not a pretty sight.
The wrong thing happen and I'd be afraid that those would come down like a house of cards.

I agree, there needs to be some lateral support. Try using steel stock from HD or Lowes to put in an X support across the back legs. Bolt it to all three legs and try not to kick the front legs. Rubber feet will help keep the legs from moving as well.

I agree, a great find for the flat files, however, if those legs are the crappy bent sheet metal bench legs they sell as kit legs, I would not even TRY to reuse them for those flat files, and I'd stack the flat files anyway. Make a strong base capable of holding upwards of 1000 lbs or you risk disaster. If you want to space them up for under drawer storage, great, but make dang sure the base will hold the weight.

I'm thinking 4X4 framing and 1/2 Ply skins on three sides, leaving the front open for access. the key for the flat files is edge support, the center can actually be empty, all the weight is supported by the sides, back and front; Mostly the sides.

Not a ton of purchases today, but good ones. The usual sellers at the flea market were not there, the ones I get great deals from. So the deals were few and far between from the folks that are left. The majority of the tool sellers there today thought their stuff was gold plated and signed by Dale Earnhardt.

Anyways, the haul:

-3 wrenches, a Stanley USA combo, a Britool DOE, and a Craftsman 8mm that I need to fill a hole in my lineup, $2 for all
-3 screwdrivers, one S-K green handle, a Craftsman, and a wood handled Proto that is new in wrap (a little surface rust from storage), $2 for all
-Craftsman 50-ft metal tape, some rust stains on the tape but I think some WD-40 can fix it right up, $2
-Snap-on distributor wrench S-8564, good shape, $3
-pair of US Post Office doors with locks, going to make a couple banks for gifts, $5 for the pair
-3 punches, 2 are Starrett and 1 is Craftsman, $5 for the set
-Master Lock hi security lock, brand new with keys in the original box, made in USA, $4

Frustrating tool hunt this weekend what with the sales that go like this

......."we haven't gotten out or gone through the tools that we are selling yet"

........."Everything is for sale in the garage...........oh sorry except the tools !" ........Well where are the tool you advertised then ?

Well you win some you lose some and you take your chances........

A few items picked up at early starting and poorly advertised sales.............the best kind of sales

Metro DataVac Vacuum like new for $20. Made in the USA and that sucker is quiet.

Williams S-52 ratchet with a thumbscrew type fitting on the direction switch. First time I have seen that and it cetainly looks factory.

Also a Bonney 1/2 drive ratchet and some old folding wood rules one by Stanley and one by Lufkin.

Got this at work, we did a yard sale and this cost me 5 bucks. I have needed a new fire extinguisher for awhile. The stand it is on is where I put my safety equipment like gloves, safety glasses, and even hang my welding helmet on it sometimes. It was 10 dollars at a pawn shop, it was an old VHS tape display. I was going to make a similar stand to hold all my safety stuff and found this.

My haul,

Air Compressor with a hole in the tank  for $30, should have ran but oh well looking for a cheap tank now.

Is it rusted? The tank looks good from the outside, too bad but the good thing is you have a Speedaire. You can put a wanted ad for a broken compressor and may score a tank free. Keep an eye on CL.

nice, nine4!

Thanks Flat!

Great score 94 on the vice!

Thanks Blackmarket!

My 85$ haul this morning. Some Gray, Klein, Husky usa, Herbrand etc.

That's a great pick supperfly17, I don't see any garbage in there!!

Only a couple items this morning. Most of the G-sales advertising tools only had rusty Chinese screwdrivers.

Love the Record Vise Dave!

I went to a welding shop closeout today. *SNIP*
The other stops were duds, except for the last one where I scored a small parts box for $2. The case needs some hammering, but the drawers only need a little tweaking. I have plenty of metallic blue paint I'm not using for anything else, I think it will look good once I can finally get to it. It'll go on my modeling desk for bits and pieces.

I like the vise but I love the parts box!!

This is what I purchased over the Labor Day Weekend flea market in and around Hillsville, VA. I spent two days shopping and counting gas, food, parking, wife's purchases and everything probably spent about $600. There are a few other items the wife bought that didn't make the tools pictures. The wife likes the beach, but this is my vacation.

Enjoy the pics.

More to come.

Dayum sumner  How does one find so many Long C's in one vacation?

snap on kra 16, ampco Berillium hammer
Cool SO, love the Ampco hammer, I have one with a different head but same cool handle!

not much today. $10 total

That Williams ratchet is nice!

Some good stuff today, not all super deals but nothing outrageous...

$10 lot with SO stubby, YOU ****!! But I really like the hand clamps, I do wonder how you are one of the only people finding these though :dunno: Cool Bell hammer too, all good stuff!

$3 bucks, anybody ever seen a ratchet like this before? It looks kind of like the head of a craftsman boxhead, no visiable name on it, but I have no idea what the shaft coming out the back is for. It is round and has a detent ball. I have some more pics if anybody wants me to post them.

Good score on the SO ratchet!!

Major suckage on that score Murphy  Having a map cabinet like those, I have to agree with everyone here about the legs. Please change the supports before someone gets hurt or worse.

Well, a week or so later I have the $40.00 hacksaw at home. It's an Armstrong-Blum Marvel #2 draw-cut saw.

Cool saw, can't wait to see it assembled!

Nice tape measure, be sure to show you banks when you get started!

Williams S-52 ratchet with a thumbscrew type fitting on the direction switch. First time I have seen that and it cetainly looks factory.

I had some "I buy tools" business cards printed up at vistaprint, just for that reason.
The Williams is crazy, bet not many survived!!

Craftsman 1/2hp block grinder in great condition for $25:

YOU **** MAJOR!! Both of those items on my wanted list...

Yep, what i thought too when i first seen it as it had some surface rust but nothing look out of place. Heck when I found the hole it was right in the middle of my nice painted surface!!!!!

I put a screw through it and pulled it out and the metal around it looked shiney but thin. A lot of water came out of it so more then likely it's rusted out bad.

I'm fixing to put ad in the craigslist for a tank so hopefully something comes around!

I went to a welding shop closeout today. The owner had passed away a few months ago, and the family was selling all the assets. They had a son-in-law doing the pricing. He sat at a computer and looked everything up, priced it at 50% of new retail for well used tools, and wouldn't budge. There was a Milwaukee porta-band that was beat, and he was asking $150. They also had a 6" 1/2hp 70's Cman block grinder w/ a homemade sanding setup, no stand. He wanted $140. He went down to $100, but that's it. No sale. A 4" pair of bent nose vise-grips with misaligned jaws was marked $12. It was discouraging. And then .......... I saw it. In a corner they hadn't gotten to with the price tags yet, two vises. One was a 4" Reed in bad shape, mounted to a bracket that may have been bolted onto a welding truck. The other was a 4 1/2" Reed #204 1/2 in decent but greasy shape. MINE ! I waited until the SIL was busy looking up a bunch of over-prices for a line of people, and then asked him "how much for the vice ?" I got an "umm, umm, I'm busy. Will you take it for $40 ?" SOLD. :rocker:

I'll post more pics of the vise in the proper thread.

The other stops were duds, except for the last one where I scored a small parts box for $2. The case needs some hammering, but the drawers only need a little tweaking. Score! I hate it when I ask, "How much?" And the reply starts with, "I saw it on EBAY and . . .

Yup, I'm planning to stack them one on top of the other on a new base frame, should have mentioned that.

you can sell this stuff and have 150-200 towards a new compressor, maybe more what games did you get

Got it all together, all of the games work. I was testing them on my nintendo when all of a sudden the picture didn't show on my nintendo anymore.

I did get one of the nintendo that i bought working along with both controllers they gave me!

But it ticks me off that the original one broke as that was the one i had since i was 5 and i'm fixing to be 31!!!!

None the less, all of the games are going for 3-6 dollars with maybe a few going higher on Ebay so I'll be putting them on one by one.

I do not have a clue if the xbox and playstation 2 games work as I don't have a system for them.

Forgot to say, I found Super Mario Bros 3 in one of the console!

Some classics in there, good find. I went around a few years ago and bugged everyone I knew to sell me their old systems, but I have yet to find any of this stuff at garage sales.

I've got some dupes and you have me checking eBay to unload them. Any idea how people are shipping games for 2-3 bucks?

I'm wondering that myself!

I read on some of them they are shipping them in bubble envelope standard shipping.

I was going to sell one and see how it goes, if I loose money I'll call it a learning experience....

folks, I never worked on a air compressor really so is there anything I should keep an eye for while buying a replacement tank such as fitting and such?
