I called about it a few weeks ago. The 8" is the jaw opening, not the width. I forget what the owner told me what the actual jaw size was.

A Columbian Autocrat. 36 lbs. 2 oz.. Jaw width is 5 3/16''. #415

I keep forgetting the beer can for perspective. Like Outlawmws said, the Autocrat is a pretty good little hobby vise, but they are just like all Washington politicians/autocrats, they'll crack under pressure. If you were to try to bend 3/4'' bar of steel in this thing with a 36'' pipe wrench, it would pop like a grape.

My first Parker - a 4X. 115 lbs, 25.5 inch long, 5.5 inch wide jaws. Seems un-abused, works smoothly and jaws meet cleanly. A craigslist find for $75.

Good looking vise you found. I've just finished cleaning up my first Parker, a 436 and am loving the Parker engineering, smooth operation, and stout iron. This one was used hard but still has a lot of life. To me their jaw inserts are the best. 6" jaws, about 180lbs. 3 boxes to ship, going to eBay and see what happens.

The hunt for my massive Wilton bullet continues.... (((I have should have just purchased one on Ebay instead of spending $$$ on several)))
so here's the new Wilton that I got on Craigslist....
ry%3D400

If you notice on the vise it is missing the the numbers on the tape measure strips, its cause when i used simple green to clean the Vise it stripped the paint... that was disappointing but such is life...

then i found this Wilton Bullet the other day and was sooooooo excited... I was at work and had a buddy pick it up for me the pics on Craigslist looked great... after I got it and took a closer look I decided to play a game I call take a shot every time I find a weld on the vise... before I passed out I counted 15 spots..... Okay maybe not but a few spot on the swivel base and unfortunately on the spindle thingy but for a Vise I think is from the 40's it super smooth and still cool to have a piece of history in the garage.
ry%3D400

think the date of the 5year warrenty says 1946? so that means it was made in 1941? but not sure to be honest...
ry%3D400

then I hit it with a wire brush... bare metal is sooo pretty
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

The welds....:scared:
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

paint time
ry%3D400

Hard to tell the color it's the metallic rustoleum color
ry%3D400

The collection grows...

That looks like the Wilton Bullet I just picked up, is yours repaired on the end too or did they come welded like that from the factory? I'm assuming poor design and both ours broke there? Also, mine is dated 4-46 too, is that the end of the warranty stamp or manufacturing date?

I bought this vise jaw kit off ebay a few hours ago. He had a buy it now price or make an offer. I figured by the time he got back to me on an offer one of you guys would've grabbed it. It's a little rough, but I've never seen one before. Anyone know what the Q-D is?

Does anyone know what any of it is. Exactly how do you use that stuff B100.
I saw that on E-bay and I thought they must have described it wrong. You've probably scored a one of a kind.

:dunno: No clue here. the pads pretty clearly are for quick change operations on screw heads and just the pressure keeps them position on screw heads, so not extremely precise.

What are the dimensions of the jaws, L X W?

The part with the writing on it sits on top of the jaw and the curved part it's connected to bends over the jaw face. It should have two posts sticking out the front for the jaw faces to hang on.
The top left pads appear to swivel in the middle for holding non parallel items. Should make a regular vise work like a swivel jaw vise. Of the two pair with fabric faces, one set is curved and the other flat. Last jaws are the metal ridged ones.

Outlaw, not sure on the exact size. Maybe 3 1/2 or 4" wide? I probably don't have a vise that size, so it'll give me something else to buy.

I have no idea, but FWIW, whenever I see QD on tractor equipment or rifle scope rings it means "quick detach."

EDIT: Oops that's "quick disconnect" on my tractor and "quick attach" for my implements. The scope rings are still quick detach.

I think yours is bigger

I don't think it came from the factory like that... think it was just used hard in a machine shop for the last 70 years and took some beatings... I think from what I understand about the date stamp is that is when the 5 year warranty ended so it puts our vices at 1941:dunno:

either way I'm glad to finally join the cool kid club of owning a Wilton Bullet...

Believe that one went right over his head.
But I'm almost color blind, so I really can't tell who said what. Disregard.

I found an awesome deal on a Yost 33c on Craigslist this week. Its 96 pounds of USA ductile iron... I am excited to get it mounted up on a new workbench I building and put it to work. The pipe jaws and main removeable jaws seem unused... guy said it had been sitting in his storage shed for over 10 years and his dad bought it from the US Navy new...

Good enough for me ;)

Obligatory pic with soda can for scale...

I added a DeWalt 18v drill for scale. It's more vise than I will ever need... which makes it just about perfect right?

No picture unfortunately, just a quick story.

I went to a scrapyard today to get a piece of plate steel for a project. As I was passing the cutting area, I noticed the vise that was in use. It was a Wilton 8" bullet on a stand cemented into the floor.

I mentioned to the guy helping me out, that "I knew a bunch of guys that would kill for that vise."

He said, "Most of the employee's here have offered their left nut for it, but so far no homicides." :lol_hitti

LOL!!!

I have one at my job, and I've showed EXTREME interest at least a dozen times to the powers that be. They don't get it:dunno:, but that's possibly a good thing;). Maybe my persistence will pay off one day. Last time I saw it in use it had a 12mm bolt locked in it. I just walked by and laughed.

Nice Yost:thumbup:!! I've always loved the look of them espicially the taller stature. What's the story with the handles on certain Yost vises like this one? Did they have some sort of handle/crank you could use to lock them down more securely? IMO the run of the mill ball at the end of the handle seems more hand friendly than that design.

Yeah, I'm not sure. This Yost, from what little I've gathered is used by the USMC, the guy I bought it from said his Dad got it from the Navy. Maybe this is a "Mil-Spec" version... I'm totally guessing though.

I'm also wondering if the swivel posts are factory, mine look like an after thought or replacement verses the others I see on other Yosts.

Where did all the pipe jaws go? Some are car wheels, some are bumpers, some are drive shafts. They were put to good use.

I always thought it was a cost cutting measure.
