can someone please explain why the new spline sets(usa) and the older black spline(taiwan) are so damned expensive??

i mean who can possibly afford this set, and the individual wrenches are expensive too to even want to buy just one.

any light on this. this is beyond even snap on prices(i think).

$979 for an 18 piece wrench set
my point is, what mechanic, industrial or auto can afford $2000 in a full set of wrenches both metric and sae, and still manage to make a living, i mean, rich people really dont shop at grainger, these are designed for the industrial mechanic.
who is the target market for these wrenches???

In many industrial applicatiojs, tools are provided by the company. Most companies like mine get far better pricing from grainger

yes, the average discount for for high volume companies is 15-25%, take that discount and then look at the price, its still around $700-850 a set still too much, most companies do not provide basic hand tools for their mechanics, and these sets are basic plus some large sizes if you get the bigger sets, i met no one with these sets, most companies ive worked for that have paid for certain tools, paid for special tools that i would never buy, nor should i buy such as 1'' impact tools, and and large rotary hammer drills

Companies purchase these kits, they don't blink whereas you and me might get a heart attack.

ebay can be your friend if your dead set on it, many other good options out there

Snap On
1/4" SOEXR8 $29.95
5/16" SOEXR10 $30.95
3/8" SOEXR12 $33.00
7/16" SOEXR14 $35.00
1/2" SOEXR16 $37.25
9/16" SOEXR18 $39.25
5/8" SOEXR20 $43.75
11/16"SOEXR22 $45.75
3/4" SOEXR24 $50.00
Snap On Total $344.90

Proto from Grainger
1/4" JSCV08A $28.30
5/16" JSCV10A $32.50
3/8" JSCV12A $34.70
7/16" JSCV14A $36.95
1/2" JSCV16A $38.10
9/16" JSCV18A $40.25
5/8" JSCV20A $44.80
11/16" JSCV22A $49.40
3/4" JSCV24A $51.50
Grainger Total $356.50

I used the full Grainger price for the above pricing. That is every size Snap On offers.

I added the exact same Proto part numbers on Tridents website.
Trident Total $230.63

For comparison I used the Snap On Flank Drive Plus since those are there only ones with an offset on the box end similar to the Protos.

Now I am not trying to take a swipe at Snap On here. These are both probably the best ratcheting wrenches on the market. I would be happy to have both in my tool box.

But what a lot of people are missing out when they complain about these Protos $$ is they are top of the line US made ratcheting wrenches.

Also dont get hung up on the large set when you look at price. You probably wont need the 9/32" and 11/32". Also as you see above as you get larger so does the price. These Proto sets have a lot more wrenches in them.

PS now if everyone goes out and buys these from Trident I will expect a sales commission.

Comparing the metric sets

Snap On SOEXRM710 $385.00
(Includes all wrenches 10-19mm)

Proto JSCVM-14SA $439.00 from Grainger
(Includes all wrenches 6-19mm)

The Proto set has 4 more wrenches. You could buy these individuals cheaper or the set cheaper elsewhere.

If you are really interested and it must come in the set I could get them for you with our discount from Grainger if you really wanted the wrench roll that comes in the set.

Otherwise these are a great price from Trident. With the left over money buy a nice roll somewhere

MSC direct has the best price i have seen on them. I got a set as soon as they came out.
I love mine. Best ratchet wrench I have.
There price is $384.73 for the JSCV-11SA set. But wait theirs more as they say on TV.
Right now they are having a 30% sale.

http://www.mscdirect.com/browse/Wrench-Sets?navid=12102559+4294930807+4288247229+4288175078&searchterm=Reversible+Ratcheting+Combination+Spline+Wrench+set

The 30% off ends today but MSC runs sales like this all the time.
Singles and Metric are priced low also. I normally purchase all my Protos from Grainger because I get 55% off on all Proto and Blackhawk tools but for some reason MSC direct has the USA made ratchet Wrenches at a better price.

I bought a set of the black finish, spline, reversible ratcheting ones for my business about 2 years ago. IIRC they run 8mm to 19mm with no skips (but since I only work on Subarus, I use just a small subset of that). I think they were $300-$400 for the set when I got them.

They're worth every penny. They'll hold onto things every other wrench has already rounded over. I use them to take customers who have screwed themselves over by rounding off the head/nut and get them a quick, profitable turn around by just using the Protos to solve the problem. After two years of professional use, they still work fine without any maintenance at all. They never self-reverse, they never skip, they never get "stuck".

They cost more because they are actually better.

Nah, the Proto's look worse. Boring black. Nothing shiny to them at all. They just work very well, better than any tool truck brand I've ever used. They were also CONSIDERABLY cheaper than the MATCO spline ratcheting wrenches at the time that I bought them.

The MSC flyer has the 20 piece SAE set for 589.00 and the 22 piece metric set for 629.00.
Can you use the 30% code on top of the sale price?

So, whats the consensus on using spline drive wrenches/sockets on hex fasteners?

Good, bad, ugly?

I have SK spline ratchet wrenches, I think the spline works great. Would I replace every wrench with spline, no. That said it is not a gimmick and works as advertise.

HIGH QUALITY, non-"universal" spline broached wrenches are, in my experience (pro mechanic) better for hex fasteners than 12-point or 6-point broached wrenches. I have never rounded the head/nut with a spline wrench that was well made. The cheap (anything cheaper than tool-truck level) wrenches do cause problems. The "universal" (fits both SAE and Metric) wrenches cause BIG problems.

Spline broaching seems to be one of those things that works fantastically well if you make them perfectly. However, get even slightly sloppy with the production and it's just ****.

I agree. I tried out some Kobalt and Craftsman spline wrenches in the store before I purchased the Proto. They had a really poor fit so I was concerned about buying the Protos but they fit well without any slop and i have yet to have them damage a bolt head.

I think I saw that MSC is carrying USA made Proto now, so maybe the Taiwan set will get blown out....I dunno I'm happy with my craftsman/snap on/Armstrong/lang non spline type
