Well I made it back home but I had to take the dear wife out to dinner first!

Here it is the air compressor that I'm going to rob the tank from, gave $20 for it. It actually pressured up to 60 psi before the cylinder started leaking. The guy said he came out to the garage and the compressor was running. Apparently the switch got stuck and started filling up to the point that the compressor valves blew out. If it wasn't 220 volts I would see if I could fix it but I don't have a 220 volt plug in the garage.
img_0533.jpg

Then the $5 SK tool box! I really like it, just need to get the black paint off. I'm hoping it was a cheap paint can job and i can get it off.

img_0534.jpg

This is the original color,

img_0535.jpg

But if you had looked closely in the pictures you would have seen this!!

img_0536.jpg

It's the door!!!

img_0537.jpg

Apparently they didn't know about it and didn't paint it black,
img_0538.jpg

So the question is how do I get that black paint off without damaging the original if it is still in good shape?

By the way, there is some serious suckage going on this thread today!!!

I thought I was doing good with the two things I got but based on the other post I should have gotten a fully working 60 gallon IR air compressor to compete with these others scores!

For ID'ing that box in a timely manner, I would like "payment" in the following method: More pictures (drawer slides or not?) inside drawers. Just go crazy what that camers AND basic dimensions of the box (LxWxD). :D

:lol_hitti

Seriously, if you don't mind I would appreciate it. Helps to build the database for future reference.

Yes sir. Saw it off the bat.

So the question is how do I get that black paint off without damaging the original if it is still in good shape?

I've had good luck with full strength simple green, soaking a paper towel and then letting it sit on the area for a few minutes. Then scrub with a soft brush, wash with water and dry. Typically simple green will soften the cheaper paints commonly used to repaint boxes yet will not touch the factory paint. Obviously use caution and test in a inconspicuous non critical area.

$5 YOU ****. That looks to be in great shape.

Geore Z. Lechmeier, I believe. I would guess that's an owners name because its stamped in and the letters don't line up very well. Who knows what the significance of the date is. His birthday perhaps?

I found one cool tool today at the local thrift store. I'm not really a pipe wrench collector, but this one had a coolness I couldn't pass up. A 1908 patent date, an interesting engineering feature where the outer jaw pivots on a machined part and the inner jaw pivots on a riveted pin for a better grip, I suppose. Anyway, I had never seen one of these and I thought it was pretty darn cool. Of course the price tag that said $1 had some influence on me too.

Very Cool Pipe wrench Msgt! I had to really look close the pat. date almost looked like 1902!

Dave I agree with the owners name idea, and probably the date he bought it. :dunno:

Man you others; too dang many to mention, you guys are ON it this week!

That is a really neat looking pipe wrench and a nice find. In my attached picture, is the spot circled in red a hole that goes all the wall through the handle casting? If so, is there anything mechanical in there?

If you look at my green lines it also appears that you have a pretty bent hook jaw. That is interesting, because most pipe wrenches I have seen will bend or snap the handle long before the hook jaw will suffer any damage or fatigue. Maybe they didn't harden the hook jaws back then like they do now.

I forgot to mention, the guy I bought that cabinet from GAVE me this new can of FLUID FILM. Anyone ever try it? He sells it at his hose/fitting business and compd me a can to try hooking me into buying more:p

pic00204.jpg

Now, back to the sales. Feeling like the broke tooth loser I am, I left out for a few pawn stops on the way to a sale that was totally opposite end of the earth from this mornings sales.
First stop has a super nice 50s cantilever Craftsman box but it's full of damaged torch handles and misc used tips and it's marked $49.95  Things with prices marked don't get discounted at this place. Only the unmarked single wrenches and things I can pick up for cheap. I asked if he could dump the busted torch **** in another box and sell me the Craftsman but no luck. I did walk away with this handful for $10, no tax this time.
Williams 1/2x10" Extension and 12" adjustable. Proto brake pliers, Greenlee unibit and a small Craftsman extension.
pic00205.jpg

Three more pawn shops on the way to the other sale, only thing I got was dirty fingers...Finally get to the other sale, probably should have went there first this am. I grabbed the Swingline's on the way down the driveway before being directed to the "workshop" out back where I grabbed the Wiss shears and box of chalk. There was an old school Craftsman vise bolted down, the owner lady said it would be sold with the house, since she bought the house with it there :lol_hitti
pic00206.jpg

I'm walking out and I see this cool looking lil guy with a $7 price tag. Not too bad I think. I throw it under my arm and away I go!! Halfway home I'm all on ebay trying to identify it, last one sold on the 5th for about $100!! I'm all excited, can't wait to show you guys my new score!!! Wait for it....
pic00207.jpg

No, the second pic....I get home and turn the handle twice and the damn jaw falls over...Shaft broken, shoot me in the face!:(

I kind of like this Friday the 13th thing.
Today I crashed a garage sale.
They posted a couple of days ago and I wrote down the info. It was today, the 13th, at 9AM and gave the address on Craigslist along with the promise of tools! So I skipped out of work for lunch and showed up at their house and went straight into the garage. They had a couple of tables of fishing gear and a beer fridge. Noticed a few items on a workbench priced and asked the lady if they were off limits. She tells me everything in the shops for sale!
Pure heaven and so little time (1/2 hr. lunch). Asked about a machinist box S-K) and the husband tells me $5.00! I start snooping and stacking on a couple of more boxes. I also notice he looks a little...cross. Then he blurbs out, "We postponed the sale. It isn't until Saturday".

They deleted the post days before.

I apologized profusely. It explained the lack of signage. And why no one was there but the owners. And why the owners didn't seem like they fell off the good humor truck.
Still, I ended up with my favorite mystery boxes of stuff AND I did a home invasion with out going to jail. It worked out to $28. Not sure yet what I have yet, but I know its a mix of Cman, Mac, S-K, and even Mercedes. I plan to go back again at 9 sharp. I might show up sooner and catch breakfast with them. There's jumbles of stuff to check out.

Sorry to hear that. I wonder if you were looking at a vise I sold on eBay. It was identical to yours. The dang thing sold for $122.50 + shipping. I was absolutely blown away by how high that thing went. I was hoping to get $25 out of it.

On the way to work Friday I stopped by a sale and found a few tools.

Ford pliers, Testeel pipe wrench, Ball Pein mallet (only marking is Made in USA). It is black rubber.
$2 for these three tools

This morning there was a neighborhood sale. Most stops had junk, but one had lots of high end tools. Most were overpriced (such as a $600 proto 3/4 socket set). Here is what I got for $10

Russwin brass lock ($4), Gates belt tension gauge ($1), Ridgid #5 aluminum strap wrench ($5)

One last stop on the way home had two new cans of spray paint for $1 each

First, try simple green on one of the sides. But you gotta let it soak in... submersing it or wet paper towels.... I did the paper towel method with ok success.

On the rattle can spray-over, paint job removal, :+1: on the multiple recommendations of this. I've done it a few times and actually use a long soak in SG to recover good quality paint brushes that have been neglected. One was rock solid with paint, and I use it regularly now... :3gears:

Nice find on the Ford Piers, Matt, for some reason I have a hard time finding any of those. That rubber BP is an odd one. Does the ball end have a metal cap?

Hemi, you did very well! That small craftsman two drawer is a nice size! You ought to post some details in the Crown top thread so they can properly drool over it!

Jus, Not a bad way so save a wasted day! i like the old Craftsman stuff, and the DP vise! I don't have a Wilton, DP vise, (and I have quite a few...)

jusridin, sweet Wilton!!

hemifalcon. Love that box, good score on the sockets!

mattblast, not bad for a Friday!

Outlaw, good info on the SG, I had no idea it would clean old paint brushes too!

There was an auction today so I only hit 4 planned garage sales this morning. Only scored a pair of Channel Locks for $0.50 at the first one, nothing at the next two and then I got the games for my girl's kids for $20.

pic00211.jpg

pic00213.jpg

Then I went to the auction to register and preview what's available. There was lots of the regular cabinets and desks, etc but what I saw in the pics online was what had me real interested. I saw what looked like a Craftsman 150 DP, checked it out and it looks complete. Satisfied with my list, I make my way over to the two lathes I saw walking in, there was Southbend (heavy?) 10 on a table and a Logan 10" on a stand. Both looked nice but I am in not in the market for another lathe at this time so we started towards the door when all of a sudden, I see an Atlas horizontal mill. My blood starts pumping, I'm feeling faint... Had to leave and catch some air, plus it would be another 3hrs before the auctioneers made it to the section I was there for so we left.
I hit a pawn shop on the way home and snatched up this Proto box for $10 with a filler wrench(not shown).

OK, my meager haul for the day: The meagerness offset by the uniqueness! :D

First Up A hand made cribbage board for as buck. It needs a little cleanup. We have a number of non-factory made games, and SWMBO is redecorating and wants to use some of them, so this should fit in! I need to make some pins up for it.

attachment.php

An estate sale that was also a target of opportunity, had TONS o'rust, but this was this only save; $7 for a Stanley #62 Low angle plane. I still need to clean the gunge off the inside, but it should clean up beautifully!

attachment.php

Another stop, (where I didn't see a temperature sensing gun for $5 in time... )I picked up this ammo belt for $2. The ammo did not come with it, I put that in adjusting the loops. I need to get some more flat loop material to complete it...

attachment.php

And the last of it: from the Collage Flea; A Proto Professional 11/16 for a buck and a tomahawk head for another buck! (Two different sellers)

I forgot the last stop before the auction, they had tools listed but when I got there, they said they had not had the chance to go through them yet. I passed the woman a business card and she handed it to her father telling him to give me a call. The man mentioned wood working tools so I got to talking with him for a minute, he brought me to his workshop where he had a Craftsman wood lathe, scroll saw and table saw from the 30's, all in decent shape. Knowing I was headed to the auction to try and buy a Craftsman DP, I got his number and told him I would call next week with an offer. I saw this cool pad lock on the way out so I picked it up and hit the road.

Great stuff guys (as usual  )

Hemifalcon, wow what a get. Got any more pics of the box? Price paid? We need details man, details. :D

Nice day outside here. Hit a few sales on the way home this afternoon, lots of baby clothes. Total spend $5 for first pic.
-USA rivet gun
-Cman 9/16" V combo
-Misc USA metric hex keys, goofy sizes that I needed (ex. Long 8mm)
-Small, super handy size "W. German" diagonal cutters, not a single nick in the edges.
-Crow bar
-Folding saw w/ never used blade
-Utica diagonal cutters
-What I think was a soldering iron :dunno: it has 2 solid copper blocks on the end ~2"x4"x3/4" thick. Will be good for weld backing.
-A neat, heavy glass mug. "Hand made in Greece"; really, how many items do you find made in Greece? For 50¢ I had to have it.

2nd-4th pics, I saw a bunch of stuff sitting buy the curb. Small metal box, stopped to grab it. Was so rusted out that the bottom fell out when I went to pick it up. :( Dug through the contents right there. Only two things worth saving were a Craftsman "Professional Electricians Knife" USA made and a ratchet head? Anyone recognize or need the ratchet head? I like knives, I like USA, I like craftsman, it cleaned up well. Yep, for $0 I'm happy. :bounce:

Damn Zach, there is a knife just like that here on CL, I have been trying to meet with the guy for a month now but he lives in the next town over and I hate going there...

hemifalcon didn't seem as "into" the box saying he just bought it to carry the stuff :lol_hitti That would have been the first thing I grabbed :rocker:

:lol_hitti Crazy coincidence. Obviously the PO didn't think it was worth it, so in the trash it went. :dunno: Note it was pretty rust, pic is after clean up. It is still tight and works smooth. I need to work the edge over as it looks like someone tried to sharpen it on their driveway. It is kinda a neat knife. The "other" blade actually locks like a liner lock knife would via a brass strip down the middle of the knife.

:lol_hitti I know, it was almost like. "Well I have to get all this home somehow. :headscrat Either a cardboard box or this Craftsman tool box. I guess I will take the tool box. I bet they even felt sorry for him and gave him a deal on the box.

^^^^ I have the Klein version of this knife!

?..... Why do they call it an electricians knife? :dunno: O excuse me a "Professional" electricians knife? I'm not a professional electrician, am I qualified to use it?

Picked up a KD tools 383 valve spring compressor for 2 bucks at an auction today. Actually it was part of a batch of other junk including a craftsman hex head driver handle and 1/4 drive socket driver with a socket on it. And a pair of husky side cutters. And a box cutter knife with a few extra blades in the handle. And some sort of small jig for maybe small pipe work. And a made in the usa L shaped box end wrench. That is not all, but most of it. If I had brought 20 dollars would have a sort of rough wilton 3ish inch vise and stand, but it will be there next weekend and maybe I can bring more money. The columbian vise I wanted went 45 or 47, way out of my range. The wilton has to be opened by hand but it closes pretty good. I am going to try and have 40 for next weekend for the vise and some other stuff they have. One of the jaw faces is loose, the other is welded on, so it needs some work. I offered 10-15 as they were closing, but no go.

Sorry for the poor picture quality, going to get a better phone/camera maybe later this year.
