Garage door framing question

I've been a lurker for a while but I'm finally framing my new garage. It's a 31x51 stick frame building with 10 foot wooden walls. The foundation consists of frost walls and footings with a six inch slab. The height from the finished slab to the top of the frost wall is 1 foot. Inside ceiling height will be 11 feet. It's a 9 pitch trussed roof with no attic

The door will be 12ft wide. I'm planning on using a built up 2x12 header. How tall of a door can I use? Once I settle on a door height at what height do I frame the header?

You can go with a 9' high door, or you can go with an 8' high door. 8' is a standard, 9' may be special order, therefore more money.

As far as the frame opening, find your door first that you are going with. Most doors, you frame the opening to the door size. For instance a 12' wide door x 8' high, gets a 12' wide opening, x 8' high. Then your seal trim covers the edge of the door to seal it.

Your header size and material depends on where the door is located and the loads the header will carry. Is it on a side wall or gable end?
If a side wall, what roof and wall loads are there? What is the roof span?

And I much prefer LVL's to dimensional lumber for headers over garage or OH doors.

It's a gable end wall with roof trusses and a span of 31 feet, so there really isn't any weight on it. The 2x12's should be more then fine, plus I already have them.

If it was a side wall with 4 or 5 trusses sitting on it, that's a whole different story.
