Unable to see much on the pivot jaw vise. Please tell more about it.

I just did a little clean up and paint job on it yesterday. It's marked COL HDWE CLEV'D O. USA Cat no 402 1/2. So it's a Columbian 402 1/2, not sure of it's age.
The jaws are only about 2 3/4" wide. The movable jaw was stuck when I got it (of course) but it still had the original pin. I painted it with Duplicolor "Cast Iron".

I had to flap wheel and hone out several areas of the pivot jaw area on my American scale. A lot of work but worth it.

thank u

I wonder if anyone has made a database of the photos that has been post on the vises of gj? if so could this be something shared?
thanks 4 any help.

Earlier this summer, I saw a local auction picture, that looked like an Emmerts pattern makers vise on an old bench. I was off that day, and had things I should have been doing, but I went to the sale. Sure enough, it was an Emmerts, and also a W.C Toles rapid acting vise on the other end of the bench. I waited through 8 hrs of households and junk ( I did get a never been mounted Wilton Shop King, and a few odd tools), until they got to the basement. I figured they would sell the vises and bench separately, but they sold it as is sat, and I got the whole works for $80. The son of the guy that lived there, said it was in the house when they moved there in 1960, and didn't know where it came from. It was in oil country, and I bet it was out of one of the old oil boom/industrial revolution pattern shops from around the turn of the century.
I cleaned it up, and gave it a couple coats of 50/50 tung oil and mineral spirits to seal it up a little, made room on my wife's side of the garage, and put it to use.... I was going to take some pictures of it finished, but I had stuff all over it in no time, so I just went out and took a couple pics.
The whole jaw plate on the Toles Vise slides up, to clamp with the bench dog, instead of the usual narrow vise dog on wood vises. The bench dog is blacksmith forged, spring an all. The whole thing is a very good set up, that would be hard to improve on, all these years later.

Here are a couple pictures from a trip to the Henry Ford Greenfield village. In Edisons wood shop, was a W.C Toles #20 vise, just like the one on my bench above.
The little vise pictured was in the watchmakers shop, and I couldn't tell who made it, but it had about 1 3/4"-2" jaws, and a swivel jaw.
Edisons machine shop had a bunch of Columbian 5"(I think, they were 40' away) combination vises down one wall of the shop.

If you haven't been there, and like old iron, automotive, american history, do your best to get there with 3 days or so to spare. There is something for the whole family.

Well, thanks to you guys I now have a vise. I've been looking into getting one for a while, but they don't seem to show up too often in SoCal. There are some but they are usually priced quite high.

I ran across a posting on CL today for a "commercial vise." The picture was low quality and it was hard to make out the lettering. Through this site I was able to tell it was an Athol and I convinced myself that it was a 614 1/2.

I stopped by the guy's garage and chatted for a bit. It was his grandad's and it seemed to be in good shape, even though it had about 1/8" of paint on it (even in person I couldn't read the model number or manufacturer). He seemed to have kept it greased and it didn't look abused, with the exception of a slightly tweaked handle. The pictures make it look very beat up...but I think it is clean underneath. Jaws looked good and square and the dynamic jaw came out with no effort at all. It looks all original with the exception of one of the handle balls, which has been replaced with a welded on nut. I'm hoping that all of the paint kept the rust away.

I probably paid $20 more than I should have, but I'll be able to use the stand for a grinder that I'm currently sprucing up and bench mount the vise.

Any way to tell the age on these old Athols? I noticed that it doesn't have "Athol" written vertically which makes me think it might be older than some...regardless some paint stripper is on the shopping list.

Wow Blitz, I can't remember seeing paint that thick on a vise unless it was deliberately done to a Chicom vise to hide the imperfections! But I'll bet it cleans up great!

I'd setup an E-tank for that one, of if you don't want to do that, Oven cleaner will probably do well also,

This is my new to me Reed 405! I paid $60, not a bad deal.

This vise is 99.8 lbs and came appart very easy. The locater pin is a little rough and one of the swivel lock bolts is cracked but other then that it's in great shape. I'll post some photos when I mount it to my low bench.

Nice Reed 405! I have the same vise but mine came without the tapered pin for locking the swivel jaw. I would like to machine a new pin, but I do not have the dimensions of the original. If possible, could you please measure the taper angle of the pin? Or two diameters and a measured distance apart on the taper with a caliper would also work (I could then calculate the taper).

Attached is a picture of my Reed 405

Thanks!

I posted this elsewhere the other day. I posted it again here because this vise, which I cannot find ANY info on, looks so remarkably like an older Wilton that was posted much earlier in this thread (the first few pages). I wonder if this was a chinese knock-off or if this was made by wilton and sold as a Ludell.

The handle on front of the vise is threaded on both ends. The screw is chrome plated. there is very little play anywhere on the vise.IMAG0253.jpg

I've begun fixing up my old vice. It's a C. Parker No 1 with 3.5" jaws and a non-rotational base. It's was my grandfathers and I was wondering if there is anyway to approximate the date of manufacture?

Also, has anyone had their old vise powder coated? Also, does anyone know where I can find replacement jaws?

With the Big Numeral 6 cast in, and the chromed handles everywhere, I'd vote for a COO way far west of Hawaii, so far west that it is east!

That's a clean little Columbian you got there. Do the jaw inserts appear to be different sizes? I've had a number of the D43/44/45 Columbians before and that particular style has has uneven sized inserts. I could never figure out why.

They look the same to me. All I did was tear it down, clean and re lube. It's practically new.

Thanks Nine4GMC, you sir have a winner! Did a quick search and these Duracraft are exactly like mine. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm a little sad that it's Asian, but I paid $125 for a 5' metal bench, *** kickin' 1/2 hp bench grinder and the vise.

I'm trying to arrange my garage. It's a double garage. I've built a worktop/workbench across one half of it. DIY isn't my thing btw, so if it's crooked, well, so be it.

Good luck to me :)

Does anyone know the best way to remove the pins holding the jaws on a C. Parker No. 1 vice?

Use a punch & hammer... I believe they are just regular pins, not taper... But if you can't make any progress from the top, hit them from the underside and see if you can get enough to come out on top where you can get some vice grips or something to pull them out.

Thought I'd toss up my meager family photo while the bench reno is being completed.

Here's mine. I have no idea on the manufacturer as all the info on the info tag is gone, it was printed on rather than engraved.

Hey guys, I have a Wilson that I got with a busted swivel base. I have had it bolted to the bench but would like to restore it to its original function with a new swivel. The only number I can make out well is 101215 on the inside below the front jaw. It looks very similar to the 1755/65 series without the pipe clamp and has a 5" jaw with an 8" opening. Does anyone know if the bases interchange between any models as I'm having some trouble locating a good source for replacement parts.

Upon a little more research it appears to be a 500, although it doesn't say 500 anywhere that I can see. It looks just like this VISE minus the number on the side. Looks like the base is quite expensive compared to some others.

I used to have 4 vises but I sold one and gave one away earlier this spring. yeah, I know probably a mistake, oh, well. who needs 4:lol:
I kept these because the Columbian is mounted to my workbench and I always use it. the luther I rarely use and don't even remember where I found it, but it's so cool I couldn't let it go.

C. Parker No 1 vise with 3.5" jaws

I am hoping someone here can give me some insight into my vise. I've had it for about 20 years and inherited it from my grandad. My dad remembers my grandad had it in the 1940's, but after reading on this site, I'm thinking it's considerably older than that. However, I haven't found any others exactly like mine and the catalogs don't seem to mention a C. Parker No 1 model.

I'd love to get an idea of date of manufacture. My grandad was born in 1912 and my great grandad died in 1926, so I'm thinking my grandad may have inherited it from him. If that's the case, then its even more valuable to me as a piece of our family history.

I'd also like to find out how to remove the jaws. My pins seem different from others and only one of them seems to go all the way through to the top surface of the jaw insert. All four pins are visible underneath, but I can only see one on the top.

So far, I've grinded off three layers of paint and the colors all seemed to correspond to the colors of homes my grandad owned. I'm planning to restore it and paint it. I've used it for 20 years, but its the only vise I've ever had and it seems to work well, so I don't think it needs any mechanical repair. I just want to make it look a little better sitting on my work bench and someday hand it down to one of my kids.

Pic 1 - Most of the others I've seen have additional text on the surface forward (directly under the static jaw) of the C. Parker text.
image_zps96d80093.jpg

Pic 2 - I have only seen one other "No 1" model online. I don't know if this means it's older, or maybe just a less common model. I need to get a little more green/yellow/gray paint off the Patent text.
image_zps5bac6b60.jpg

Pic 3 - My vise only seems to have one pin all the way through the jaw inserts that is visible on the top. All four pins are visible underneath.
image_zpsf5c6cd8b.jpg

Pic 4 - This collar is different from others I've seen. Instead of saying "Parker" it has the patent info listed in semi-circular text.

Here's the Simplex No. 400 I picked up a couple of weeks ago restored. Turned out pretty good. Now I have to see if I want to sell it or find a bench for it:dunno:.

I still have to polish the anvil clean, but I forgot my polishing discs for my die grinder at my dad's shop.

Hello Vise Friends,

Just finished a restoration that I had the honor to be commissioned for. The vise is a family heirloom that was owned by a friend's grandfather. Attached are before & after pictures.

Does anyone know how old this one is? I'm thinking around 1940.
Thanks in advance.
