Dug up my 9/32nd's drive set...................

9ThirtySecondsDriveSetWithRatche-1.jpg

Snap-On 9/32" drive set (Vintage 1939, some pieces date '37 and '38, but most '39, have decent shine for their age)

Looks like I'm missing the nutdriver plastic handled thing?

(Ignore the ratcheting 1/4" drive nut driver, re-using the pic from the "ratchet ****" thread.)

My 1937 3/8th's drive Ferret set:

1937FerretSocketSetCaseLidOpen.jpg

Most pieces date 1936-37. I'm guessing the owner added a few pieces after he purchased the set. At least one piece dates 1941, a 9/16 socket. The original 9/16" socket is still in the set, but the 12 points are worn nearly smooth. The round handled ratchet is I believe a 1939. The breaker bar I think is 1940??.

Couple more pic's of the 1937 Ferret set. Sorry about the poor closeup pic. I must be missing some sockets, as Krusty has 10, but mine only has 8, and that is counting the 2 9/16" sockets?? Missing the universal wobble/swivel also.

Believe the 1/2" & 9/16" swivel sockets, and the deep socket date 1939, like the round handled ratchet. They are among the items I'm guessing the original owner added after buying the set.

WHY does it seem that twelve point was so prevalent? I would have thought that six point would be the ideal socket drive back in the day. Still is in my view.

Going through some S-K sockets, and came across this group of Snap-On sockets.

1/2" drive, 12-point, date range is 1932, 1933, 1934. Sizes 1", 7/8", 3/4", 11/16", 5/8", 5/8", 9/16". The A-3012 drive tool dates 1934, and has a hexagon male end and a square drive male end. The hexagon end is 7/16" in size, unlike a hexagon ratchet I have. There is also another drive tool like this not pictured, but it is shorter, dates 1948, and has an A-3011 Snap-On number.

Moparhound, I have some extras of the M4 plastic 9/32 nut driver handle you need to complete your 9/32 set.

Adam

"Back in the day" they used a lot more square head fasteners than we do today...........................

You can't use a six-point on a square head fastener.

As far as so, it was just about all 12pt in the 30s 40s. In 1/2 drive, 6pts from that era are very hard to find.

This is about the only vintage SO thing I have.

I know the history of this piece. Well some of it anyway. It is a Snap-on 1 1/8 socket. Marked SW-361 USA 8.

It appears to be a 1938 date stamp if I read the chart correctly. (or maybe 58?) It came from a set of tools the USAF was sell off. This sale consisted of tools that were used on the B-26s that were being decommissioned. I also have a Williams breaker bar from that same sale.

Below are some photos. Sorry about the quality. Tell me what you think of it.

As I edited, it may be 58. However, if it was a 58 then it was a fairly new socket as the B26 was gone by mid 1962.

Also, as noted in the last picture, do these look like cracks to anyone? are they normal?

That interior "cracking" is due to the "hot broach" method of manufacturing. A result of the manufacturing, normal and fully expected.

Hard to believe, but I found a drawer/box full of more old Snap-On. Thought I was missing a few pieces in the earlier pic's. Have a wrench pic for later too.

Will describe them later, getting cross-eyed on the computer.

The long extension at the bottom is interesting, is it 3/8 or 1/2 drive? Does it have a part number, and/or date code?
