I bought a Wilton Model 744 Mechanics Vise (basically a 4" bench vise) today at Acme Tools in Plymouth MN, which seems to be a decent vise by the way but I digress... next week you can have your Miss Makita poster signed from 10 to 2!

Pic should be attached if you're into that sorta thing!

Nice! I have some blue in the garage but no Makita blue yet, maybe it's time to add some of this shade of blue!

Thanks for posting I may make a trip up to Acme. I have driven by a few times and it looks nice. I have even seen some local commercials on TV.

Talking to a Makita rep means this will be a "business" trip as well so it will work out

MJB, I had been meaning to stop by Acme for years and finally got around to it a few months ago. I'm just a hobbyist and Acme is definitely geared toward pros so I feel a little out of place there, but even so it's great shop.

They have things arranged by brand for the most part and seem to maintain a pretty impressive quality level, although I am definitely no expert so I could be wrong.

Still, it's easy to find some good quality options without the total junk you find at many places. Their prices are really good to, I was looking at a Dewalt table saw there they had at $299 while Home Depot had for $369.

Customer service is also excellent, the guys really seem to know what they are talking about there and are willing to help without getting in the way.

Check 'em out!

Its nice to see they bring in manufacturer reps. It can be very helpful. When I was at the Grainger show I spoke with all the power tool companies about drills and impacts for our use at work. The Makita guys were great and told me what to try and said go ahead and order it and if you don't like it return at full price. We have spent thousands on those impacts since then.

I wanted to buy some Wright tools for work one time and I needed a distributor I could open an account with. So I used Wrights website and chose Acme and it said Acme would contact me. That never happened and annoyed me a little bit.

I have bought Wright for my own use from Epsteins but I doubt they would want to extend terms to my company.

What is COO on the vise?

The 744 is "Made in China to Wilton Specifications"

I picked up a Wilton catalog while I was at Acme and it looks like the professional grade vises are made in the USA, while the lower end stuff is made elsewhere. The 744 is mid range I would say, I think it was $189 or so and much nicer than other vises I've seen at many places.

The pro grade vises are the Bullets and the Columbians. I'm sure they cost quite a bit more.

For me the 744 is a really solid vise that is more than I will ever need, so I really couldn't justify anything more.

I thought your 744 was Chinese, thanks.

Oh, does the swivel on your 744 have 'gear teeth' so when you tighten the lock downs it can't move?

Or is it smooth internally so it will turn if you put enough sideways pressure on something?

This reminds me of several years back when the boss and I were both single, we went to the drag races one weekend and the Hooters girls were there. Before they left he went and had 2 of them sign a poster for him. That was all I knew until Monday morning. I showed up and got interrogated by the rest of the guys...then I saw it. Stapled to the wall in the shop was this poster that said....

"Guys...thanks for an awesome night!" signed Wendy & Nicole

Years ago I was working a trade show and "Miss Rogo" was there. My co-worker and I had her sign a poster and it said "Rick- (the owner of the company) this is the closest you'll ever get to me..." I still crack up about that when I think about it.
