How many tools do you have that you've never used?

I often get this comment "it doesn't even look like you've used this...ever." Sometimes this is true...but when I need it, it'll be there :rocker:

Plenty of rarely used sockets and wrenches and drill bits that are in sizes I just don't use.

Maybe a few sockets. I do have a few tools that were bought to do a specific job and used once or twice. I bought a set of metric crowfoot because I needed the 17mm, I figured I might as well buy the set. Once I bought them, I figured I might as well buy a standard set if I had metrics.

Those are probably my least/not used tools.

I have a welder, acorn table, clamps, welding blanket, etc etc that I have not used.

I bought it with intentions of learning, but haven't done anything with any of it yet.

I have some tools that I've never used before. If I find a super deal on something I think I might use sometime I'll buy it. Then it will sit on the shelf until I need it. But there isn't too many tools that I have that I haven't ever used.

There are a bunch that I have used once or twice and then sit on the shelf. Some would say they are a waste of money. I say that they are paid for since the price to do the job including parts and tools was cheaper then taking the vehicle to the shop to be fixed. So if they just sit on the shelf it doesn't bother me. But the next time I need them I have them and don't have to run to buy or rent them and then the repair only costs the price of parts. Also diagnostic tools are things that might not get used much but are priceless when you need them. Things like compression tester, combustion leak detector, leak down tester, fuel pressure tester, coolant pressure tester, etc. are all things the home mechanic most likely will only use every now and then but are nice to have around when you have a problem so you can do the test and rule out problems.

The only tools I have that I haven't used are my large 3/4" drive sockets. I bought them because of a deal that was too good to pass up. At least I'll have them if I ever need them.

That reminds me I've never used my 1" drive set, but I use my 3/4" often. Otherwise there's quite a few tools I've never used.....couple of siphon pumps, specialty spindle nut sockets, topside creeper (only 'cause I just got it), HUGE tap wrench (cheap at garage sale), OTC load rotor, parts washer been sitting NIB for 7 years, and other stuff I can't remember

I have quite a few tools which I have never used. But I bought them on special when I had some spare change. It beats going to the garage when the repair is needed and it beats paying full price for tool when needed. Just a reminder I am not talking specialty tools, I am talking about different socket sets. As for specialty tools I will buy them if I foresee a specific repair creeping up on me I will watch for specials on the particular tools needed. There are many tools I don`t use often but I think this is normal because I and/or we don`t do the same work every day.

I was at Harbor Freight few years ago and found an 11pc 1" drive impact set in their closeout table/shelf, without a cardboard box/wrap on it and thus no price. So I brought it up to the counter, asked about it, and they couldn't find a price for it.

After offering $20 for it, I walked out with it.

:rocker:

Still haven't used it.

Many of them, but mainly antiques and small tools. I also have some things that were used once because they were bought for a certain project.

I think the most obvious are metric wrenches because I find that the metric nuts and bolts are very standard, so that I just don't find some sizes used often. I am sure I have some metric wrenches, in some sets, that I haven't used.

Also some very large wrenches, say, over 1-1/2" or over 36mm metric, and some very large and very small screwdrivers.

Just recently I used a nut cracker or splitter that I have not used in many years.

I haven't used my large 3/4 drive sockets but its better to have and not need to not have and need. I think a lot of people think a tool has to look abused to have been used as well and that if you take care of your tools you must not use them.

People tend to give me tools as payment for fixing stuff. Sometimes new, sometimes used but a lot of them eventually get used. Inherited tools sometime have not been used by me but are used such as planes, spokeshaves, old Ford wrenches... I have tools that I don't know what they do! I went to an auto parts store closing auction and bought a couple of boxes of packaged tools that I may never use...GM dwell adjusters, trim removal tools, spindle nut sockets, kingpin reamers, little pullers etc.

About half would be a safe estimate.

Been heard on this thread before, those odd size sockets, wrenches, bits, maybe a screw driver or two. I have a punch or two that still looks brand new.usally my tools, I'm sure with everyone, are bought with a project in mind.

Those 3/4 drive sockets get more use on the press pushing in/out bearings than their time on bolts. I would have bought them just for that use. The 3/4 drive breaker bar gets used since I have an adapter down to 1/2.

Yeah, I know, tool abuse. Their mine and I don't warrenty if something goes south.

Last year, shortly after surgery with pain meds in my system, my wife and I went to Lowes. I think I bought every socket/accessory that had a yellow clearance sticker. :) I have 4 sets of various sockets, still in their original package unused to date.

I can only think of one....special hub socket for front hub on old Chevy 4x4's. I grabbed it off the tool truck with the job on mind of helping a buddy with his Blazer. He traded it in the next week......

I forgot about the huge Proto ratcheting wrenches Northern has on for $15 ea right now. Now they just consume a lot of room in my box LOL, but I knew they would.

For some strange reason about a few weeks ago I hooked up on a crazy CL deal and I bought some tap & Die sets; now I already own a boat load full and now I have two more boat loads as they say so a lot of them will never get touched.

Try as I might yes for some sockets, and wrenches that will never get used just to many...such is life as they say.

I am trying to use different hammers but even that is getting harder, hope I live a long full life.:rocker:

I only rarely use 3/4" drive impacts. Otherwise I can handle most of it w/ 1/2", especially if I am not using an impact.

The only think I can think of is a few sockets. I think I've used all my combo wrenches, and the rest of it I've needed.

I think most people will say that same.

I have a number of odd sized standard and metric wrenches and sockets that I have never used. I have a Snap-On Puller Set, I use off and on and Tap and Die sets up to 1" and 24mm I have used once in a while. The way I look at it, it costs a lot more not to have the tool when you need it. That's why I kept buying complete sets. How much does it cost to rent a tool? $5.00? A half hour to pick it up, half our to return it, plus the rental fee. Your labor rate $125.00? Now, not having that tool cost you actuall $130.00.

Just my 2/100th of dollar,

Bob

I mostly agree with this statement, but would add that the sockets and wrenches that see little or no use in my shop are usually metric sizes. Also, I tend to buy sets of sockets, wrenches, etc. If I needed two or three sockets, I could buy them individually. However, buying the set of ten sockets including the few I needed, was usually about the same price or slightly more than the individual prices of the two or three I wanted. It was more economical to buy the set although it included sizes i didn't need or necessarily want. But like many others have stated, if I need them, I have them.

probably 1000s......

I have a Levin & Levin watchmaker's staking set, maybe 250+ punches and anvils, probably used 5......but it is the ONLY tool that will do certain jobs

my Fathers Erco Kick Shrinker doesn't get used very often, nor does the CP planishing hammer either

haven't used the PEXTO bar folder in 25 years

of my PEXTO stakes i only use a couple, the others hide out under big machines

my friend Susie gave me a $900 bezel chuck for my jeweler's lathe, she wanted $1.50 for the 1/4" Jacobs Super Chuck with 2 new arbors....I gave her $2, I have a 5/16" Albrecht:)

i bought most of the engraving liners.....i only like the look of some of them

probably have 200+ files use a few......a lot were free or $0.50 new......paid good money for a hollow rat tail, 5 sizes nest inside each other......use it lots

I think another good question would be:
What tools have you not used since you replaced them with another? Like not using a breaker bar not because you purchased an impact. Not using a speeder handle since you got an air ratchet. etc.
