MAPP/Oxygen gas torch

Interested in feedback on MAPP/Oxy gas torches. You know the relatively inexpensive ones available at the big box stores.

I have an old healey I am restoring and would like to separate the muffler from the headerpipe and tailpipe. These are common exhaust slip joints. I need some heat. I have no torch in my shop (the horror, I know). Anyone have experience with these units and can report if they think it will provide enough heat?

Thanks in advance

Gary

I had (still have it somewhere) one years ago that I used to braze sheet metal. It was JUST useable for that. For heating a large area like exhaust you'd be better off with a regular propane torch kit. For more heat you can use a MAPP gas cyl on the propane torch head.

I use Mapp gas when I don't want to bother with the torches, usually on frozen tie rod lock nuts. It gets them red hot so it should work fine on exhaust. I have the Mapp gas cylinder and tip from the big box stores.

Are you talking about one of those little Bernzomatic setups? If so, I wouldn't bother, the gas cost for those little bottles is ridiculous. What I use 99% of the time for aound the shop is one of the larger (TS8000 IIIRC?) bernzomatic torches, connected to a 20lb propane tank via a ~8' hose. It will do most general shop heating solutions. You can always screw on a mapp or propane cylinder for those portable needs like plumbing soldering.

Next up I will grab a full size oxy bottle and hook up the oxy/propane (same 20lb tank) torch and blast away. Just my 2¢

As mentioned, the oxy/mapp setup is spendy. If you buy a Bernz-0-Matic Mapp torch from HD or Lowes, you will find it will probably do what you need. I have brazed with it, it should heat up exhaust connections. If not, use 2 at a time. Still the cheapest way to dump heat into something.

Where are you guys finding MAPP gas? It was discontinued a few years ago and it's replacement really is no better than propane.

Correct ! The stuff they sell today in yellow cylinders is MAPP Pro, which is not much hotter than propane (LP)
