New Vise, needed more info on it.

Came across this vise this weekend. it's a quick adjust and the jaws open up to almost 18" it's unusual, there are threads on about 3/4 of the shaft and a blank area, you simply turn the handle to the blank part and pull it open, very east quick adjust. Does anyone have any history on this? What it might be worth? Any info is helpful, Thanks so much!!

This is a vise I forgot I had as I do not use it very often. I got it from a gunsmith's estate. When you turn the screw the jaws both move in or out at the same time. In the middle the threads go left handed so that this can operate in that way. The gunsmith who owned this before me was't very good to his tools as you can see.
There is no name or any other identifying numbers that I can see. Anyone have a clue? It is a very well made vise.

John

Re: New Vise, needed more info on it.

Look at pg 524, #10466 10467. I couldn't find a lot on the company, but I did find where a college prof., that taught shop teachers, wrote a book about equipping a school shop, on different budgets. He specified this vise in all lists, no matter what the budget, so he must have liked it. Wood vises don't usually bring a lot of money, even though they are quite useful for things other than wood. They are level with the bench, so they don't take up space. A rapid acting vise is especially handy. A patternmakers vise that moves any way you want it, would be a huge help, on a fab table.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could give me information/opinions about this vise. All I know is that it was made in Maryborough Shipyards in Australia. Im not so concern as to where it was made but more on the quality side. It's 660mm long, 320mm high and 180mm jaw and weighs about 70kg.

Thanks for any input.
Aaron

It looks to be forged steel because the front jaw is bolted on. I'm sure it's pretty tough.

Thanks for checking yours Mark. I'm being a bit **** about finding out all I can about my vise....wish I had asked about it before my papa passed on in 1995, but these old tools and a couple of old tobacco pipes are the only things of his that I have.

I understand. It's fun to find out the history about these tools. It's special when it belonged to a passed family member.

So I did a search for this Armstrong vise and can't find any info in this thread or google. I certainly would not pay $500 for this but I guess I am curious what you all think.

Large Armstrong bench vise. Model MV-16. Estimated to be 45-50 yrs. old. Jaw width 6 inches and serrated faces show little wear. Opens to at least 12 inches. Weighs 90 lbs. Made in Chicago, IL. Compare to price of a new one this size. $500/obo.

I think it's a Columbian with a "property of" tag riveted to it by the owner of the "Armstrong" factory where it was used, for inventory/depreciation/tax reasons...? Just a guess...

I don't know anything about that particular brand, but the quick adjust feature was fairly common on woodworker's vises. That's the style we had in my shop class in high school, I have an old Craftsman in my basement built the same way.

Picture looks close, I picked up a Rock Island and a Reed 105 1/2 in the last couple weeks. The Rock Island seems to have a large swivel base & body compared to the size of the jaws. My back is a little sore just from initial cleaning of the Reed. It had been sitting on the dirt in a barn for a long time.

Another silly two-tone Craftsman 3.5" Nothing special about it other than being a light use vise. I did have to come up with washers for it. The previous owner replaced them with a single, large hex nut on the back side. The handle was grinding into dynamic jaw when pressure was applied. I found a front and rear washer that fit fine in my spare parts bin. The color choice? Well, I'm just burning through my giant box of half filled spray paint cans until they're all gone.

The rainy season has officially hit Seattle and most likely I won't be able to take any outside shots for a while. One year it rained for 162 days in a row!!! Not having natural, early morning lighting really makes a difference in how these vises look.

Its seems like any color you put on your vises gives it that "Bling". its so "out there?" You are one of the few that can get away with these awesome colored vises your showing. If I tried that, it would, let me say, Not Look Good! I'm so afraid to enter out of my little box that I live in!
Project Viseway, you would win no doubt.

Looking for something else in my tool box today, found this little guy that I forgot where I had stored it. 1" wide jaws, well made, doesn't look like it was ever used, still has paint, or Japan finish in the screw holes. No name, has "PAT APPLIED FOR" on the front of the main body. Quarter in the jaws for scale, last pic is mounted on a 3" Yost, posted the unrestored Yost back in June on here.

Great colors. The cool thing about Craftsman vises is their casting lines make it very easy to do 2 & 3 tone paint jobs on.

That would be me if I want 200 miles away. Hard to justify gas unfortunately.

Back in the day before a wife and child 200 miles was considered a walk down the block for me. Times have certainly changed including the price of gas like you mentioned earlier. I currently try and kill five birds with one stone when I take even a 100 mile trek on the ultra rare Sunday:mad:.

That's the same as me. I can do the trip, I just dont have the time or money now to justify unfortunately. Seems like we have a member picking it up though so my job has been accomplished.

Ron did you post them on GJ directly, or from a hosting service? a lot of free hosting services get over extended by the traffic here and shut off access to the photos.
