Long Pattern SAE Combo Wrench Set for ~$50?

Hi all,

I'd like to pay about $50 all in on a decent long pattern wrench set. I've currently got 2 sets of standard CMan RPs. I'd like to migrate one to my truck and replace it with a set of significantly longer wrenches. I'm thinking about 7 wrenches from 3/8 to 3/4. Could do more or less for the right price. Full polish or satin is ok, and I'm not too hung up on COO, but would like decent quality. I'm also open to used, but I do like them to match.

Anybody got some tips for me?

I love my HF metric set. Its one of my favorite HF buys.

++ On this, it is my 1st set I grab, the set I have does not come with 13mm, but I put a Duralast (not as long) in the set.

My good set is a Craftsman metric long handle set made by S-K that I have had for a long time.

I have been using them for a couple of years now, and they have held up.

I just realized I also have the Craftsman Industrial set in that range. I actually bought the 7 piece Snap On set that replaced those sizes. I would be willing to sell my Craftsman Industrial set. They are still new and the same length as Snap On. They are full polish and US made

I have those in sae and metric sets....Junk... soft,, I split one down the handle on a mild pull.....
This is the first time I have seen anyone have a problem with this set. A ton of us here bought them when they came out a few years back and everyone has so far really liked them. I have used mine a good bit and have even grabbed them over my proto long pattern set.

I bent the 3/4 wrench breaking loose a tie rod on a jeep wrangler. Not to the point of it being unusable, but to the point I don't trust it using it again in like manner---my feet pushing on the axle and me pulling for all my worth.

I think I paid around 15 dollars for the set a few years ago so I really don't have any complaints. I still use the wrenches, just not in the same manner

I would split it and take the 2 metric sets

I just bought this deal from babco.ca. (Canada only, I'm told)

http://www.babcotools.ca/Tools/Clearance-Tools/KDT81917-With-Free-KDT81920

They are not significantly longer than Craftsman raised panel wrenches. I was expecting a little longer. The smaller sizes have more increased length.
In order, 1", 7/16", 24mm, 17mm, 10mm

At $42.50 shipped, this 9 pc Craftsman Industrial full polish long pattern set #24412, made in USA set is worth a look:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321206788866

I bought one of these myself just recently -- they are slightly different than the Craftsman Professional long pattern ones (I have the older "made in USA" Professional wrenches and the Industrial line wrench just seems just a bit "better" to me.. sorry I can't qualify that. The newer CM Professional "china" wrenches are waaay too lobster-clawish, and are not even in the same league. For China product wrench set, the Sunex #9915 set 14 pc, long pattern, full polish, and can be found on Ebay close to your target price. The Sunex to me seem nicer than the CM China full polish wrenches.

Craftsman Industrial are all "USA" and the line cannot be purchased from Sears stores, AFAIK. Maybe the outlet stores get them, as folks are mentioning that, but you will only find "professional", not "Industrial" at sears.com or any of the stores I've had access to. Even the Craftsman Industrial tool catalog does not refer customers to Sears for sales, they provide contacts for their industrial sales reps.

Grainger has clearance prices right now on CM Industrial individual wrenches if you wanted to expand on the 9pc 12pt SAE Industrial Combination Wrench Set # 24412 shown in the link above. I had already collected most of the larger sizes in this style, so the 9 pc kit (up to 3/4") was a good fit.

I'm not shilling for the ebay seller above, just sharing how pleased I was with the quality, esp. at this price point.

Bahco has a SAE set (USA made) that looks really good too, though a bit more expensive:

I have this set and also bought the matching 1/4 and 5/16

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200263774_200263774

I also have the metric set 8-27mm (with the add ons) but they are in process of phasing out NT brand and issuing in Klutch as an almost identical replacement

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200612519_200612519

Haven't seen any reviews yet for the klutch metric long reach wrenches. since you have them would you say they are extra long ( as the sae are ) and how does the quality of the klutch wrenches compare to the northern brand ( I am very happy with the northern brand quality )

Cman raised panels are awesome, especially if you have no feelings like me and hands like leather. lol I will say this about the HF wrenches, not trying to steer you away. My coworker bought a set, they do seem nice and balanced, I liked how they felt actually. However, we were givinernuts on a hex nut on some equpment outdoors (wood plant) and the 15/16" we were using just would not grab that nut, It would slip. We had to use the open end, however the open end did not spread. I grabbed my CMAN RP...took it right off no issue. Otherwise, they seem alright for the $$. If anything, id save some money and buy the HF set for your truck...keep your RP wrenches around.

My wrenches are all NT brand. Ive seen the Klutch versions in the store and would say they are the same.

The 1/4 measures 5 1/8" and the 1 1/4 measures 17 3/8" with each wrench proportionately longer in between.

I watched online for a few weeks, and for about $50 shipped, scored a set of Proto, USA T500 series in a roll (on the auction bay site). The 9/16 is 8 3/4" long overall, which seems pretty long to me. These are full-polish and in nice shape, though I prefer the satin, myself.

Hey John

Could you measure the length of the Cman industrial 1/2" wrench for me. That seems like an excellent deal. Thanks.

OK, easy enough.. the 1/2" CM Industrial has overall length of 8"
Same length as my old Snap On 1/2" OEX16A combination.
For comparison, the standard CM raised panel is 6.5" overall.

I'd pull the trigger on the ebay set, before the USA stuff gets rare & expensive.

John A.

Grabbed a few 1/2" combinations for a picture, the shortest is an old Wright, with concave stem, I somehow like them the best. The Snap On, Williams Superwrench, and CM raised panel are shown as well.
Second picture is a pair of CM 3/4", to see how close the Industrial and Professional lines appear alike. I guess the Industrial shows the size in larger markings, maybe my old eyes appreciated that to give them the edge over the Professional (USA, not China version.)

Thanks for the pictures John. I decided on the Cman Industrials from your Ebay link. I also found the Craftsman Industrial Digital Catalog and it had measurements for all the wrenches in that line (plus RPs and Professional). It should be a good reference for anyone else thinking about purchasing these. Here's the link and some screen shots:
