It's a page right out of the history of the industrial revolution Demoman. This is the type of stuff that keeps the readers coming back to the Journal for information, education, and intrigue. That took a lot of work to put all that together just for photos that we can enjoy with just a click of the mouse. Many many thanks for all the work.
PS. You've created yourself quite a storm shelter there. You crawl under that, chain yourself to it, you ain't going nowhere.

Demoman, GREAT collection! I had to chuckle though[ that bare neked vise in the middle of the first pic looks like a newborn, with a couple of well dressed parents nearby, surrounded by all the grand and great grand parents, and grand uncles and aunts!

When you get all the 8"ers, are you going after all the 6"ers???
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go for the 9's and 10's. You can go back and pick up the 6's anytime.

Here's a Stephen's from ebay last week. Seller didn't know what it was and had a buy it now for $20. Got it just after it was posted. Needs some cleanup.

And a Yost 41C that I got today. I've been trying to find one of these for the last 2 years since Autopts posted one up. Hollands, Parker, and Rock Island made similar vises, but I like the look of this one best. Here's a pic and a link to Nick's to show what a clean one looks like. Also I passed a big cow on the way back.

I have a 391.5180. The lead screw threads started to pull loose from the shaft. The lead screw hole in the dynamic jaw has also become tapered so the vise is really no good to me.. The nut is fine but does have some wear. I've never taken the nut out of the vise but the threads look to be in good shape. What does the difference in the last number mean, different size?

If the nut will work for you I can send it to you.

Thanks for the offer but I don't think that it would work. The 5181 is a 5" jaw width and the 5180 is a 3 1/2" jaw width. In one of my photos you can see the nut with the number 5181 cast into it so it should be unique to that model.
Over the years I have considered making a new nut by machining a new dovetail mount and welding an acme thread nut on top.

Whoa there!!!! Lets get the low down on that vise. What is a lever on the side for?
That is why I am here to learn about such things. That is COOL!!!

I post a picture of a twelve foot cow and can't even get you guys off track. What's a guy supposed to do?:headscrat

It works a cam action to squeeze on your work piece. You move the slide by hand. Once it's closed on something the handle is pulled out forcing the jaw to close tighter. This is a better pic of the side of the slide.

Yes, it's a commonly available Chinese made vise available pretty much anywhere under dozens of different names. There's always 5 or 6 on my local craig's list anywhere from $40 to $200. They're worth different amounts to different people. I wouldn't want one myself but if I did I know I wouldn't pay over $30-40 for it and it had better be perfect.

That would be an Asian made vise shaped object commonly know as a "boat anchor" or the "Next gen HF tools" once recycled...

:3gears:

I was at an auction Friday night that literally had a garbage can full of those. Plus a Wilton Tradesman 1765 and a Columbian 204 1/2. The lot of seven vises plus Rubbermaid garbage can went for $175.

Ok, that explains the $20 price tag. Guess I'll leave it there. lol

If you have no vise at all, then give the guy $10 or $15 and haul it home as your "beat-the-tarnation-out-of-it" vise. For that, it's a perfect vise !! :D

For all the reposts of that pic . . . fellow GJer's please edit those posts as you can only really stand a Chinacom vise so much. ;)

 I have a Japan Craftsman for now. It does the job, but always open for a cheap upgrade. I'll stick with the cman for now.

throw it in the recycling bin?

You sure that's not one of the later USA manufactured vises in that style? I thought someone had posted pics of a new old stock version of a rotating style vise, that was made in the USA, by one of the major vise brands, or maybe sears or Ace. :headscrat

That one is 100% Chinese made as was the Wilton branded one I owned which looked identical in every way. They're fine for lightish duty use.

Looks like the buyer is flipping his "barrel-o-vises". The last four pics in this ad were NOT part of the auction lot.

+1

If it was USA made, why would a USA manufacturer not cast or stamp it ON the vise? I don't care what the box it came in said, that was made off the coast of California, WAY off the coast.... Just my opinion.

Thank you for the info; I did not realize it was china made. Not such the great deal I thought it was; but has held up well so far. Although, I do more wood working related/Light DIY stuff than real fabrication work.
