Hello all, I've been lurking around here for a few months now.. But it's getting closer to my dream garage finally becoming a reality.
My initial plan so far is 36x24, radiant floor heating, portable 2 post hoist, 80 gal. 2 stage compressor and a mig welder.

I am a Heavy Duty mechanic by trade, so it's time to have my own space for projects.

Well the garage build has finally started!!
The first thing on the agenda was to remove a very large Ash tree in the back yard.

Then it took two weeks to clean up all the branches and cut the wood into manageable pieces

Rented a wood chipper, but should have rented it for more than 1 day

This tree is friggin huge!! I have about a chord and a half of unsplit wood, and I'm keeping 4 9ft lengths of ash and 2 9ft lengths of poplar for milling into lumber.. Such beautiful wood (100yr old tree) that I can't burn it all.

On September 11th, ground work started.. 2 men made short work on preparing the site.. The driveway was roughed in in less than 3 hours.

They did find an old septic tank to everyone's surprise, the the first dump truck load filled it in.. It was a wooden tank about 6ft by 10ft

Looks like fun. My neck hurts from turning my head to the side to look at your pictures, but when I did it was worth the look :)

Keep posting your progress. We love pictures.

Yes I apologize for the sideways pictures.. My wife's blackberry does that, and I can't figure out how to rotate them!

The crew will be back on the 18th to finish the ground work and start building the forms for the cement.. The cement will probably be poured on September 23 or 24th
And yeah, my iPhone lens in severely scratched, so i apologize for the foggy looking pictures.. time for a new phone!

No, time for a real camera! Even a cheap point and shoot takes better pics than a cell phone. The right tool for the job, after all.......

If you open those pics in a photo program (I use Irfanview, it's free and very easy to use) then resave them they'll automatically be oriented correctly.

I know that cell phones have become the all in one solution, but I find that some things still are done better with a dedicated tool.

Your shop looks like it will be as big as the house - well done!

Hydronic piping laid out. The orange squares are where my Max Jax pads are going to go, therefore NO pex piping in this area.

We had to do a little rework for the piping. The plumber brought up the piping in the wrong location thinking the existing manifold was for the hoist electrical.

this is going to be the sweep for water inlet... I'm going to pump water from the lake.

Only from 1 bedroom, we have future plans to make the middle bedroom a walk out to a deck along the back of the house.. I did initially want to put it on the existing driveway next to the house, but I wouldn't be able to go 24' wide. This is the best comprimise for the size I wanted.

There are two sweeps.. one near the house for hydro and cable TV... And one near the lake for water.. I'm going to use a jet pump and **** it out of the lake with a heat trace. (See post #21)
The hydronic heating will be a closed system with glycol.

The natural gas feed enters the building above the floor, so that gets added later.

^^What he said!^^ Unfortunately for me, having the attention span of a Gnat, there's only one thing I would be thinking of all year long!:bounce:

Just curious, how is that portable structure in your last picture holding up to your Canadian winters?

Its not all that bad.. But you have to keep the snow off it. I was lazy last year and didn't shovel snow away from the side walls as it slid off the roof, then I come home one day and the tarp it split right down the center front to back! That is why if you look closely I have a silver tarp on the top. Its 4 years old this year.
It is a decent storage solution, but its no fun to work inside... the wind howls through and its loud as hell, but it was better than working in the pouring rain. I can't wait to drop a nut or screw and have some hope of finding it in the new space.. working over a gravel floor *****!

Finally an update!! The garage has been progressing nicely, although winter is here in full force now.

While I was hunting on October 18.. my builder came in and did more work on the driveway:

October 26 we (my builder hired me to reduce my cost) started framing
