Domestic issues have kept me away from the forum for too long but I did have time for eBay today and caught this baby gem. This 1945 specimen seems flawless from these eBay photo's. If my memory is correct from Autopts info the date stamp at this time was date of manufacture not warranty exp. Lot's of happy citizens in the U.S. in September of 1945. If it's a 1941 manufacturing date just the opposite. I can't wait to see this guy. Got too excited again, paid $250. Don't care. Love it. The internal debate is to restore the little guy or leave him alone.

Carla, Wow.

I bought this one from a local scrap yard. It feels like it weighs at least 100 lbs but I didnt weigh it on a scale.
It was rusted up solid. It took 3 weeks soaking in a tub of used atf and a 3' pine log as a deadblow hammer to free it up.
The jaws are in perfect condition and after reverse electrolysis it opens and closes like butter.
I have to take a finished pic monday since it is now in service where I work.

While digging in my Dad's basement, I came across a no name, Chinese, clamp mount / swivel base vise that he bought around 25 years ago. I don't think he ever used it. What's unique about it is that the back jaw moves. Also surprisingly, the movement isn't as wobbly as several Chinese vises that I've come across. Sorry for the low quality picture.

Pardon the question, but doesn't the Wilton 825 have 2.5" jaws? The ebay ad says 4" jaws. What gives? Some time ago, someone else in GJ showed a 825 and it was described as having 2.5" jaws. See picture below of vise described as a Wilton 825 with 2.5 in jaws. Is this a real 825?

i just picked this up today. Columbian no. D46 6" jaws swivel base made in USA. Looks like it was very rarely used before it was repainted. I don't see any cracks or damage, only a couple dings. Brand new jaws installed. I got it off of CL for $80. I would say it weighs around 60 or 70 lbs.

Most Columbians I've seen had the fancier lettering is this a newer vise?

I have a Columbian D44 that I bought in the early 1970's. I know that the D series wasn't current in the mid-1980's when I bought a 3050.

The person that posted the ad was referring to how far the jaws "open", not the width, I believe. You need to train your eye to see through uneducated ads and sometimes it turns into a great score... I love "bad descriptions" from sellers that won't take 5 minutes to do some research.
Don't mean to steal Nick's thunder, but I'm pretty sure that was the case here... Smart Buyer + uneducated seller = Good Deal.
P.S. If it's marked 250 or 825 or 101009 it's a 2-1/2" vise.

Yes sir, you are exactly right. It was listed the better part of the week too and no one saw it close up. Its got 90% of the paint left I'm told and I have new smooth jaws from KMScott coming. I've already flipped it. Spelling it as "Wilton vice" didn't exactly help either

Just finished restoring this vice. It was one big block of rust a couple weeks ago. I'm about to throw it up on Craigslist. Any body have a good idea on a price? I know how much a new one costs, so what would be the price of a decently restored 350 S?

I think you could get $200 all day. More with the perfect buyer but how often does that happen.

Got this at the local flea market for $15. I was wondering if the experts could answer a couple of questions. First, around what year/decade was it manufactured? It looks older than most Reed' I've owned in the past. Second question/concern I have is in regards to the end of the handle. Is it supposed to look like that? The other end is a one piece welded ball.

That was a quick reply from across the ocean. Thanks for the info, I will search for "Schlegel" and see what I can find out.

It looks to be 4" to 5" ? It is at an upcoming estate sale and I was trying to get some info on it. It has a different shape than you are use to seeing on a normal vise. It does look to be very stout !!

I sure would, the only thing that throws it off is the main screw head size. but if that opens as wide as it looks, that would land on my welding bench in a NY minute.

The only other possible neg is the near mounting ear looks like it hes brazing or bad welding on it...

Just some some new jaws from Mr. Scott for my Reed 4C.... me so happy! :willy_nil

I know the old jaws had plenty of life left in them, but these give more clearance from the pipe jaws and also as much as I use this vise I really wanted to keep the original set intact... ;)

For being such a big beefy vise, I can't believe how thin of a lip they have on the edges under the jaws... go figure...

Nice jaws. Now what is the purpose of the middle pin? I'm making a set for my 4c and I machined for the pin. I figured it was for location or something. Are yours reversible?

No mine are not reversible. I think the middle pin is for extra support in case someone tried to beat down on the jaws.

I saw that on eBay as well.

I think that 1) the static had been welded, and 2) the base obviously has a huge chunk taken out of it, probably beyond reasonable repair.

But hey, if someone was looking for a beater for a good value, maybe that was it!

I have a 1C with the dowel pin jaws and they are reversible. Jason, see if your screw holes taper from both sides?

I can maybe answer for Jason, I built them for Jason and used a short head cap screw instead of the (I am guessing) 30 degree special screw. I did not have a example jaw that was reversible or I might have built them that way. In fact my example did not have the pin hole like the Reed 1C I was sent for measuring. I guess it is a good idea to make reversible jaws as long as the serrations do not in dent the Static and Dynamic jaws. Another concern would be having a pocket on the back side of the jaws that could be a stress point when you tighten the jaws or during clamping pressure.

Took a second look, at first I didn't think they were, but sure enough, they are tapered from the back side!!! Who would of thunk?

Honestly though, as tight fitting as the middle pin is, and as tight fitting as the jaws are, flipping them around is NOT an easy ordeal. If I need a smooth surface I just use some blocks of wood or another vise with copper liners...

But kudos to Reed for the extra effort. ;)

Thought I'd add my post vises to the thread.

The one mounted to the metal bench and the smallest one on top are both Columbian (6" and 4") the mid sized on on the bottom of the stack is a 5" with no name.
