Alaskan 40x50 shop build

So that's what Alaska looks like, Beautiful!!! Nice shop, sorry for all the trouble you seem to be collecting along the way (banks). I hope to have a shop one day. I do have one question, did you build your own trusses? I can't really tell from the pics. Good luck!!

Stew. I did build my own trusses. Set them as we were building. Took a lot of extra time, but stronger and cheaper then the local truss company.

I thought so,..too cool!! I plan on on doing the same, my Father-in-law (world's greatest) has a portable saw mill and we have about 3 tree service guys in the area who keep us supplied with all the firewood and pine for lumber we can stand. Love the build.

I can't tell from your pics, and it sure seems like you know what you're doing, but is there only a single jack stud on either side of those garage doors?

Also, they only seem to be supported in sheer?

Jagman, they are double plated, but will be double skinned (OSB, and T1-11) for more then just sheer.

No codes/etc. where you are either? It's very hard to get "home built" trusses approved, and by the time you get an engineer and if your time is worth anything, you're well ahead by buying them pre-made.

Looking at the pictures it appears the end of the LVL beam for the garage door is not supported by a jack stud. Looks like double king studs. I assume the darker color header is a LVL beam. I don't know that it really matters since that is not a load bearing header.

On a farm here, pole building as well, no codes, no permits,...no worries. Until the tax man comes and finds it, then it's,....well you know,...."Hey,..When did that get there?" And then it's time to pay for "Improvements",...Gotta love it.

Temps have been high 20's at night, low 40's during the day. My location is a little higher then town so the snow gets to me quicker.

It is cut in and supported, it is a insulated box beam. Darker color because I had a lot of pressure treated around to use up. Very heavy to put into place, I can say that.

Just so you know it was actually switched to a 36'x44', but I couldn't switch the title of the thread. So far including the purchase of the shingles i'm sitting at about $33k if that helps.

I did, put a couple sheets of osb and t1-11 on, then walked away. Get back on it the end of April.

What are you going to be using for heat?

Large Monitor/Toyo stove, woodstove, and eventually a furnace for makeup/recovery air. The Monitor will always be set at its lowest point which I believe goes as low as 55.

Toyo stoves are nice units, my father has one in his garage.
I have been searching around for land in the fairbanks area. I hope to build a 42x60 shop in the next 3 years.

Started back on the shop last week, finished all the T1-11 siding yesterday, figured I would start by posting a picture part way through that process. Been spending the day cleaning up the inside of the shop. Sides and back have 1" of foam, while the front is OSB direct to studs, with T1-11 direct to OSB.

Side stepping from siding at the moment, trying to figure out my electrical. Think i'm going to go with 16 each 4'long lights, just can't decide if I should do 2-bulb or 4-bulb. Need to go take a closer look at what the stores have. Going to wire in a grid so that 4each are hooked up to 4 different switches. Planning on running all my 115V in the walls and 230V exposed.

I didn't see if anyone answered you about the doors, but I have 10ft doors with 11ft ceiling, so I know it's possible to only have 1ft space. I didn't know it at the time, they installed reverse wound springs, so the standard wall mounted openers don't work, they only go in one direction. I have heard people mounting them upside down and they work, however you have to space out the tension monitor from the wall.

Thanks for the info, I knew the heights would work now, but Ill have to look into the other info you gave, and look up the info for the openers I was looking at. Still haven't ordered the overhead doors yet, but will within the next month most likely.

Well after 5 months of no updates, maybe I should post some pictures soon. in the stages of mud and tape now on the shop. Wood stove is running and a furnace just shipped from N.Carolina that I wanted. 200 amp service has been in for a few weeks, and did the blow in insulation in the attic yesterday. Put in 110 bags, but will add more later on as it wasn't as much as I needed for a R-60. Garaged doors have been up for well over a month, but still don't have power openers yet.
