Looks flippin' fantastic !! My wife is from South Hero.

Ah, an Islander. I like it out there, it's where I do a lot of my biking.

great job so far... I really miss New England

Thanks. At least you can say, "it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there" Here in the Peoples Republic of Vermont the taxes are about to break the backs of us working class. Stupid me goes and builds a shop so I can take a direct hit on my property taxes. :headscrat What was I thinking......

Wood walls are great if you experience wide swings in temperature and humidity. Nothing like that ever happens here in New England, right? Oh wait. You'll be happy with the wood on the walls for many reasons, some of which you touched on already. Go for it! Make it durable and replaceable without mudding in, too!

Hey Neighbor,

It's worth doing the wood walls just to avoid the taping & mudding. Ugh. You're right about those temperature swings up here. Fortunately, the humidity is not that often. Which brings me to this point. Many of you liked the clear coating I applied on my shop floor as do I. But beware, on certain days when conditions are right, it will condensate. We recently had some very cold mornings with rapid temp rise & HUMIDITY during the day. When I came home and threw open the overhead door the cold sealed floor immediately began to condensate. This doesn't happen in my unsealed garage floor. I don't expect it to happen but a few times a year but for those of you that live in HUMID climates with temp shifts it is something to consider before you make that floor look all nice and shiny.

Hi Mag

You actually have me considering wood for the downstairs (car town) walls. I would assume OSB soaks up a TON of paint. What is a best practice to paint that? You think one coat of Killz and a coat of an eggshell Behr Ultra (or something similar) would suffice?

Hey Saba,

Nice progress on your build. I've been told to do an oil based primer (Kilz or Zinsser BIN) on the OSB, and a water based Latex Acrylic paint on top is fine. Apparently a water based primer will raise the grain. So that's the route I will go. I just need to hang some OSB now. I hear you about other life events interfering with the build. I should have my Hot Dawg hooked up by week's end just in time for the cool weather.

Mediocre Progress of late

Damn Job gettin' in the way, but happy to be employed.

In any event, OSB sitting on floor and my cat using it for a staging area to clean what cats clean. Cool Cat!

The gas certified heating guy (neighbor/friend) cancelled twice in getting my Hot Dawg installed. No problem we still have plenty of warm weather.

I picked up my rolling tool bench and cabinet this weekend at Sam's Club to match my workbench. I have to say I'm very impressed with the quality of this Ultra HD series. For something you have to assemble yourself it is very good quality. Take it from an ole gear head wrench monkey.

I installed some T5 Light Strips in 2nd floor storage area. I like the compact size of these units. HomeDepot sells a 4' strip for $34.95 that includes the bulbs. They work at 0 degrees which is nice b/c that area is unheated. The shop itself will have three 16' T8 strips. Plenty of light for my 50 year old eyeballs. T8's are still the best bet for the money.

My workbench and wall cabinets are going partly under the stairway so I got a little creative and mounted one of those T5 light strips under the stairs to cast direct light onto the workbench. I will paint the underside of the stairs white to help reflect more light.

I'm being very careful with the interior design to maximize the use of the square footage. Although it's a 28' by 24' (672 sq ft) space it's really not all that spacious. I'm happy to have it but it can quickly become crowded.

That's it for now. I'll be off the air until sometime next week. Heading out for my annual fly fishing trip on the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY just off Lake Ontario. Wish me luck. Over & out.........

Hey brother, looking fwd to the next update. I found that pink insulation that I am planning to use for the attic hatch. Thanks for the suggestion. Quick question - What kind of glue would be best to join foam to wood (OSB) and foam to foam (I want to double up since they make you buy a full sheet). Does the standard Gorilla wood glue work? Haven't dealt with glue that much.

Not much of an update

Saba, Funny you asked about the foam glue. I just glued two pieces together yesterday. I picked up 2 tubes of Liquid Nails Foam & Panel glue. Sold at HD and Blowes. Works good and should bond to the wood.

I just got back from a lousy salmon fishing trip so little progress to report other than getting one wall of OSB in place.

Thanks for the tip. OSB looks good. I will probably do the same on the back wall downstairs. I really need to start that soon. Work travel will be ridiculous the next few weeks. I will even be gone a couple of Sundays.

How did you do at the tourney? Did you also do regular fishing and ship a few home?

What made you decide OSB vs drywall?

Bucks County - My home turf. Miss it.

OSB vs drywall - As I mentioned in a previous post, it's a shop not living space. I'll be doing some wood working and mechanics and will undoubtly be banging the walls. Also, it will make hanging tools, shelving, signs, & equipment, etc.. a whole lot easier. As soon as I'm done hanging the OSB it will get several coats of white semi-gloss paint. It will look fine...stay tuned :drink:

Yeah I am actually in Montgomery County now, but I work in both. I love the area. VT looks cool though!

Oh ok - I just wasn't sure if there was some technical reason or anything. If you're going to risk damage to drywall then OSB makes sense. I like the look of drywall but I will be honest I do get concerned about making it perfect and then punching holes in it with jack handles and stuff lol

Slowly but surely she goes.......

Primer and Paint on OSB. Accent trim in all the corners will come later. Sheetrock on ceiling taped with 1st coat of mud. Will work on finishing the ceiling this week so I can paint and hang my T8 lights.

Will start hanging some cabinets soon.

There's just not enough hours in the day.

Looking good. In the third pic, it looks like a cable outlet and power box. Are you putting a tv on that wall?

Oh Yeah! Big Screen for Big events.:pimpflash I'll have to figure out a way to keep the dust off it when I'm woodworking. Maybe build a cabinet around that's ventilated. They throw off heat even when they are turned off.

What do I have to say for myself

I **** at mudding, especially ceilings. I decided to texture the ceiling and do it using the most forgiving technique. Slapbrush texture. I covered my floors and walls with plastic and away I went. I used all purpose joint compound (green lid) that I thinned out with a lot of water. Using a 3/4" nap roller I applied to one board at a time, and then smacked it silly with the stomping brush. It went fast, hid all my screw ups, and came out pretty decent. I'm happy with it. After a coat of primer and two finish coats it will be fine. I learned from a youtube video :dunno:

The nights are getting cold here so before I started I sealed off the stairway. I needed to heat the shop so the mud would dry. I doubled up some 2" rigid insulation, built a rim around the stairwell, and cut the panels to fit. Put on a handle and PRESTO. I may put a 3rd piece of insulation on later. One panel is only R-10.

More to come :willy_nil

Nice technique on the textured paint. I think that's what they had in my house. Are you still planning to run the hatch on a rail/track system at some point?

More importantly, I hung the dartboard.:drink:

Hung a few cabinets today. Seville Ultra HD series from Sam's Club.

The benchtop is almost too nice to work on, but, I'll break it in soon enough.

Finishing up

NG Heating Unit being installed tomorrow. Other than that, all the major stuff has been completed. Hooah! A shop is born. I waited a long time for this space. Everything that's left is essentially trim work, organization, and transferring tools, the motorcycle, and other equipment from my crowded little garage & shed. I have the entire winter to fiddle with that stuff.

I've enjoyed posting the progress of this little shop and appreciated the many comments and suggestions from others. This is a great forum!

I visit regularly so feel free to drop in and say "hey".

Over & Out. :beer2:

Quick update

Hot Dawg heater is in service and she throws some wicked heat.

Hung an electrical cord retraction reel. A convenience item. Will come in handy with my rolling project table I plan to build soon.

What's left: A blank wall over my rolling tool bench awaiting a 50" LED flatscreen that's sitting in my basement. Maybe, next weekend.

:cool::cool:

Fiddling with the small stuff

Spent this weekend transferring tools from garage to shop.

I installed some galvanized metal peg board. Heavy Duty for sure. It comes in 16" x 32" panels. Purchased from HD.

Also found a nice looking diamond plate 40" shelf.

Now it's time to shop for a compressor.

You have to know your priorities

Big Screen before a compressor. Actually, the wife purchased the TV for my birthday last month. It was at the bottom of my priority list. Really.........

YEEAHHHH! Big CONGRATS brother. Love the shop, and love the space. I love everything about this build. Nicely done neighbor.

I just picked up on mine again. Put up two walls of sheetrock on the car floor, and hoping by this weekend, that would be done so the town can sign off and I can park for the winter.

End of the Road

I pretty much exhausted this build.
The remainder is finish work and machinery placement. Nothing much else to report.

I did pick up my new compressor today.

If & when I start some new projects, in the shop, I'll report back in.

To those contemplating a garage/shop build. Do it!

Over & Out. :willy_nil

great to see a build with a bike in it. What year and model is it??

Also did you consider putting in a bike jack and having a recessed area in your floor for it???

I ride an 2010 Limited and I hope to pick up a new 2014 to add to the garage in the next 9 months or so.

Hey Hammer,

2012 Electra Glide Police Model. Didn't consider recessed area. Bike jack has always served me well. Maybe a lift in the future if I decide to do a bike build. My riding buddy just picked up his 2014 limited. Lots of new changes on the 2014 models.

Huge changes in the Limiteds and man it makes me go crazy. I was gonna keep this 2010 and pick up a new Heritage softail for around town. But with all the changes to the Limited I'm tempted to buy a new one fo them and see if I can trade my older limited for a decent Heritage.

Hanging & Banging Cabinets that is.....

I hung a few more wall cabinets as I had some dead space at the end of the wall and I can surely use the storage.

I also made good use of the space under the stairwell by relocating my grinder and drill press.

I hung a soundbar under the tv as the skinny *** speakers inside the tv were too damn tinny sounding. All is good now. Bonus with it being bluetooth compatible as I can pump my Ipod tunes through it.

Oh, and the bottle opener, gotta have one of those handy....

My wife's grandfather's old lumber saw hangs above the garage door. Kinda cool looking.

First snowfall has arrived, and I finally have my hibernation space to get me through the winter.

Nice. What did you pick up for a soundbar? Looks like a Yamaha or an LG. Also, does that sub rattle the cabinet at all?
