Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I've spent almost 12 hours FINALLY updating my website today ... still more to go, there's over a year's worth of new work and feedback to add. It's getting there! (And in reviewing the site reports, GJ members are still topping the list for site visitors for the fourth month in a row -- thank you kindly ladies and gentlemen!!) :D

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

nice looking project, straight 6? I wish I still had my 64 1/2 289, it was stolen in 1979. I still have the title to it.

Thanks. Yeah. Straight 6, 3-speed. No frills "Plain-Jane" coupe. I've had it for years, but never thought about putting the time into it it deserves due to the house being totally gut, OT at work, and just life in general. I'd give my left testicle for a genuine 64-1/2 convertible with a 260 V-8. That's my dream car. Sorry some A-Hole had to steal yours, that *****.

I changed the rear wheel bearings in the XC90. It took longer than it should have because I broke a bolt and had to remove it. I used some techniques that I learned about here on GJ and I was able to get the job done in time for the A&M game.

Working with fiberglass for the first time. Taking longer than expected to set, we'll see how it is after sitting overnight.

I brought my tired 402 big block home and put it on my engine stand. Ugh. Trying to decide what I want to do with my big paperweight.
At least I have a fresh 350 small block crate motor for my truck now.

I use to love big blocks. Then the LS series came out. Light, much better on fuel and any power flavor you want.

Ran a 240 circuit for my new welder and plasma cutter. Went ahead and laser engraved the cover plates just for fun. Also made a 60 foot extension cord for it too...

A large pair of Balls it seems!

We were away seeing friends most of the weekend but I managed to sneak 30 minutes or so out there whjilst ther wife was watching some **** on TV. Just did a bit more tidying up. Finally sold my second dead lawn tractor, got £105 for it, it owes me nothing as it was free, I don't have the time to do anything with it and I'd rather have the space. Just waiting for the buyer to contact me and arrange collection.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Saturday morning I pulled the wife's Altima on the lift for a LOF service. Changed transmission fluid as well and rotated the tires. Good for a couple more months now.

We then installed my son's hardtop on his LJ and serviced it was well. We also installed his new Rock Krawler HD tie rod and cleaned his IAC motor/circuit.

Yesterday, I pulled my Jeep in the shop and installed my new Rock Krawler HD tie rod assembly as well.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I spent Sat helping a friend work on my old car!

I sold it to them about 5 years ago (yes, I know - never sell to friends or relatives) and they love the car - a 98 Lexus ES300 - and it hasn't needed much since then, but with 150K now there's some work to be done.

We put on all new pads and rotors, and flushed the brake system, changed the oil and filter, then tackled what I was afraid was going to be a monster problem......the alarm and door locks had gone crazy, and would arm themselves and go off unexpectedly, and the only way to stop it was to put the key in the ignition and start the car. He had finally pulled the fuse to stop the shenanigans, but that meant the car couldn't be locked so it needed to be resolved.

Following my own advice of "check what was worked on last", first.......I asked him what repairs he'd done to the car.... he said two years ago the lock rod on the right front door had come off and he'd pulled the panel and managed to put a new clip on it to fix it. When I asked when the automatic lock problem started he said "about the same time"........ah ha!

Acting on that tiny bit of detective work, we pulled the right door panel and deep in the dark recesses I found a little prox sensor dangling from it's wires.......hmmmm, that looks promising. Further investigation didn't really show how or where it was supposed to attach, so we pulled the left front door panel off too, to see what we could learn. Sure enough, it belonged on the outer door handle, right where he'd previously spent 2 hours trying to get the new lock rod clip installed. We pulled the outer door handle off and I figured out that he'd broken the plastic attaching tangs, a call to Lexus revealed the NLA status for the part, so it was down to finding a way to reattach the prox and see if the system worked. After a little study and the judicious application of a nylon zip tie..... Viola! ......it worked!

Job Done! and the happy owners drove off into the sunset. We'll be installing a new set of shocks/struts all around next, and fitting a new cat and exhaust system, then they should be good to go for another hundred thou.

It was fun to drive the car again, and encouraging to find it still ran perfectly and smoothly as always, with one small exception. Just before I sold it to them the check engine light had come on, indicating it needed a new O2 sensor, however it didn't say which bank and of course I replaced the one easiest to reach - and of course it turned out the other one was the problem - net result, 2 new O2 sensors. Since I did that they report the car gets 29mpg on trips - I NEVER got that good of mileage in it!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

We worked on more progress on my friend's V8 Miata project this weekend.

The task at hand was the clearance the stock 302 oil pan to clear the Miata's subframe and steering rack.

First we marked the pan for the cuts:

After we removed the section we checked for proper clearance, Clarence:

Next we made a paper template and transferred the shape onto the sheet metal:

After a little welding, and bending we got it done.

...

If your FG balls are stay wet and sticky (that sounds so wrong :p ) the resin might be outdated/expired. The stuff from the big box stores tends to have that problem every time. If you want that stuff fresh you have to buy it online generally.

Shape looks good, what did you cast off of?

I am having a 5S moment.

1. Sort stuff.
2. Set stuff in order.
3. Shining stuff.
4. Standardise stuff.
5. Sustain stuff.

To make room for more stuff.

I made great headway today, targeting specific storage areas. The electrical section receive the clean up this time and its amazing just what can be achieved in a few hours!

Replaced front brakes and rotors on wifey's Yukon. Those stupid caliper brackets are a ***** to get off.

Also bought a second 44" HF so I can get to completing my workbench.

Pulled the front and rear suspension from my '71 MG B. Finished stripping the car, now it's time to build a rotisserie and begin restoring the body tub.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Got rid of the second lawn tractor, thats another £105 in the fund, will be short lived as the sale of the two I've just ebayed is about to pay for 4M of used twin wall stainless steel flue pipe for my garage woodburner. Just got to nip over to Wales and collect it later this week. Damn that stuff is expensive, new it's eye watering and as a result holds it's value well used, guess with the current economic climate and the fact that the first of the big five UK energy companies has announced an 8% rise on gas and electricity prices (the rest WILL follow, as they have this time of year for the last three winters profiteering bastards) people are looking for ways to heat their houses cheaply so secondhand woodstove stuff is at a premium.

Whilst I was waiting for the buyer to arrive today I carried on with the cleanup and it's looking much better in there, have thrown two sack fulls of **** away, plus a load of scrap.

Drained my molasses rust-removal tank. I tried it for about a month. It smelled bad - like a sweaty ***** - and really stank up the garage. I'm switching to electrolysis...

Last night I finished insulating the front wall and installed one of pair of double outlets.

Had to postpone the garage door install a week because I'm not fully sheathed yet.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Monday and Tuesday nights were spent installing a new gas-fired overhead furnace/heater in the shop. My old Reznor 75k btu heater worked well enough heating the shop, which is 18 years old this month, but it was time for retirement. The Reznor was used when I bought it 18 years ago but I thought it would get me by for a few years as I was completely out of money for my shop budget. I would bet it was at least 10+ years old when I acquired it so it had to be close to 28-30 years old.

Over the past several years I had replaced the fan and gas valve and finally decided to replace the entire unit this year.

I replaced it with a Modine Hot Dawg 75k btu.

I will throw up some pics once I download the camera.

Mike.

Moved the track bike from the garage to my uncle's garage for winter storage on Monday. Moved the new project bike onto the lift yesterday and put the previous project bike against the wall.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Finished up this trio and got them outside to weather a little bit. Really need to find a better way to store the 8 tailgates I have in my garage.
