Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I spent the whole day trying to find a dead circuit. I changed outlets, traced wires, and still cannot find why one wall is dead. I went through the breaker box and checked the wires in it. When I built the garage, I put different walls on different circuits. The one portion of my garage was just to park in only, so it was on it's own circuit. When I kill the breaker, it kills the lights and outlets. I just can't find where the lead in wire is to that wall. When I had help wiring, the person helping me backstabbed a few of the outlets. I changed those all out what I could find (three of them) I have one outlet down low with two wires coming in but it's dead. I have an outlet directly above it with two wires coming in and it's dead (it's up high for my traffic light). Then I have one under my desk which has one wire coming in, so it's the end of the run. I replaced the outlets on either side of the wall which I assumed feeds the outlet, and they are both hot. I sure wish I had a digital camera when I built the garage and had some pics of how I wired it.

Got some new tires for the golf cart... Unfortunately the front wheels rub when you turn... Still waiting on my lift kit to come in (which should fix the issue) but I just had to see how they looked. :)

Also included one "before" picture.

Not today, but this weekend:
1. Carpenter's mallet from wood scraps laying around.
2. My little girl has a fascination with ladders so I made the larger one for her birthday but lately she's been begging me for a ladder for her doll babies too.
3. Toy swimming pool for her dolls

Is it ok for me to admit to making toys for dolls on a shop forum?

...as long as it's for your kid (or grandkids).

Let my dogs sleep in there as it was ******* down in buckets outside, other than that, parked my car and stared at my tool cabinet with nothing to do.

Just in and out getting tools as I'm redecorating my study in the house. Spent the day sanding down the woodwork in prep for paint and caulling small gaps etc. Got to build my new built in desk when we get back from a weeks trip to France leaving this thursday to close up the holiday home for the winter.

Hung two new lights, and put together a rack, setup a charging station for some of my cordless tools.

(New garage 18x24, concrete finished Friday!)

 It is fine to admit to doing something for your child, just have her help in the process so she can learn from the experience.

There is nothing finer you can do than make a child happy.

I forgot to mention, she worked beside me on these projects and helped with measuring, gluing the boards together and painting. She even helped me cut the little rungs for the tiny ladder. I'm proud of how much she is learning and taking an interest on working with daddy in the shop. :)

Nothing wrong with that! My next project after I get my tools/junk moved from my shop at my parent's house to my new garage is to build a "tot-rod" stroller for my daughter.

So this was the other day, but started arranging my cabinet placement in the garage. The stem wall seems to pose a problem though, it is about 3.5" out from the drywall. I don't want to have a 3.5" gap behind the wall so I've got to do something about it.

The base cabinet on the left is on the concrete, against the stem wall, about 3.5" out from the drywall. The countertop in this case will be 35.5" tall, a bit low. The one on the left is sitting on top of the stem wall with some scrap under the front to level it. In this case the countertop is about 42" tall, a bit too tall for me (5'10"). I think what I am going to do is cut the 4" or so toekick (wasted space) area off the bottom of the base cabinets, set the back on the stemwall, then add legs to the front to level them up. This should bring the countertop height down to a comfortable 38" and also allow for storage beneath the cabinets.

I thought about leaving them 3.5" off the wall, and boxing in the backsplash on my countertop, but I don't want to lose even 3.5" of space in the garage. Also, there will be wall hung cabinets spanning between the two tall "pantry" cabinets on the sides.

Thanks for bringing back some fine memories. My older brother never liked to get dirty (still doesn't) ... working with daddy in the garage all those years ago turned me into the lifelong motorhead I am today. I'd be willing to bet your daughter will have a lot of the same wonderful memories I do. Keep up the fine work countrytech! :D And don't be shy with the "after" pictures either.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Spent an hour or so yesterday getting ready to pull the engine out of my '24 T AGAIN. I think it's posessed......been apart 3 times by three different engine guys (and once by me) and still has a rattle. Got fed up, completely re-did another engine that I will be putting in on the weekend......this engine that is coming out will be going down to the bare block and start from scratch. On a positive note, I'll have a spare:D

Started cleaning my work toolbox. 3 1/2 years sitting at work unused it sure got filthy. I started with the tool cart. It seems my former coworkers used it as a storage shelf and got oil inside the lid, the drawer and the bottom tray - what a mess!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

My daughters Toyota Tercel was having starter issues. Click, click, click.. then eventually start.

I replaced the starter contacts and plunger on the starter. I read on 'yoda forums that this is the most common wear point/failure with Toyota starters.

A rebuilt starter was $150 versus new contacts and plunger for $12. It works like charm now!

Very easy fix... this vid shows the procedure: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgGWQ02GtEk

I worked a little on the 67 vette, while my son put the pistons in the 400 block.

Took a tire off the little dump trailer and found out it has a tube in it. No reason to buy a new tire. ;)

Refilled the kerosene squirt bottles.

Brought in some fire wood.

Moved the Oil/Lube cabinet from the right side of the garage to the left next to the other two metal cabinets. Moved the workbench back against the right side wall. Also got a picture of the plastic sheet that I put up on the ceiling in prep for winter. Need to seal it up around the lights and drop a sheet down around the back corner.

Smoked a cigar, had a couple of beers while disassembling my vise that I got on craigslist to start the restoration process.

What is the plastic sheet for? Moisture control? Heat retention? I'm not quite ready to insulate the first 8 feet of my garage walls and ceiling, but a sheet could be a quick temporary partial method.

Went and picked up our cattle trailer from the farm to check out the light problems, found out it needs a new plug, better than wiring problems! Got my son in laws 85 F150 running, now need to clean the tanks and bleed the clutch so we can check the transmission.

I brought home new peg board to install on the wall of the garage. But I had a long day at work and took a nap, right before going to bed.

Wife called me this morning, looks like I will need to take a look at her truck tonight, glad I can now do it indoors!

Heat retention. Going to setup the torpedo heater to blow into the space, not looking forward to the moisture it's going to throw out though.

It's a cheap temp fix to keep heat in the garage. I did it one year before I had my own place and used my SIL garage. I put it up in 4 pieces and never taped the seams. It was better than no ceiling at all.

So far, started a fire and gathered the scrap for a run to town. $5 worth but it's out of the way and I didn't have to pay to get rid of it. ;)

I found out that Loc-Tite plastic epoxy isn't worth jack when it comes to repairing snapped off plastic trim in your car. I went ahead and just ordered a new part. Two hours of my life wasted... :( At least I had a chance to sweep the floor and vacuum up the cobwebs.
