Now im interested, if i go into an auto parts store what am i actually looking for? Might make my raised Cman's decent. The 1/4 drive works horribly, i got them in one of the sets because i wanted the sockets, putting them in my tool box was the first and last time i touched them pretty much. They are horrible compared to my dads old Cman's. On the other hand i have the Cman next gen's with 60 teeth and they work pretty good.

Had to bring this back from the dead, Another testimonial. I have a MAC XR11FPA that I applied the permatex to just tonight. NIGHT AND DAY. I always liked this ratchet, I don't know why, but it's probably my favorite, but after it got a dead spot in it and I had it rebuilt it was WAY notchy. Totally transformed with the lube, back to its former broken in self :D. I'll try my other low count ones tommorrow. TWO :thumbup:

What's the viscosity of this Permatex red lube? Is it thick like a grease or is it thin like water. The last time I added anything to a ratchet it was 3-in-1 oil and it seemed to work fine... and that was about 10-years ago.

Also might give bar and chain oil a try... it'll stick to the parts.

If you want red ooze... just use ATF. Cheaper than the other stuff...

If you want something that is green and sticks. Use this on my motorcycle chain. If it won't fly off a chain it is going to stick to ratchet teeth.

Merk,

What other lubes have you tried? Could you do a review, of sorts?

Doesn't Snappy recommend SuperLube (grease or spray) and have you tried it?

Any links to how to apply this stuff....drench or just dabble lightly on teeth (why so much run off?).

I bought some of Merkava's magic lube the other day but I haven't had a chance to try it out. All of my ratchets are already lubed but I want to see if this stuff makes a difference.

It does work good, but I found out if you put more than 2-3 drops of this stuff, it makes more of a mess than what it's worth, especially on ratchets that are not 100% sealed. This stuff is so sticky-stringy a little goes a long ways.

I bought some of the superslick Merk fix yesterday in hopes that I would win an auction I was watching on ebay. As of a couple minutes ago, I'm now the proud owner of an FR936 SO ratchet :D my first one! wahoo!
I plan on using it for about a week to get a feel for it and then I'll open it up and grease her up to see how much of a difference it makes.
When I got home yesterday my girlfriend asked me what was in the bag, and I told her it was a new lube I wanted to try. She was pretty excited too...until she found out it was for machines.:lol_hitti

You are lucky. My wife would turn tail and RUN if she heard that coming from me!

SuperLube 21030 is the official lube. It works good but it's a grease, so you have to take some time to paint it on the parts as opposed to just flooding the ratchet like you would with red lube.

LOL!!!

I'm confused because when Williams sent me my rebuild kit for a B-52A it came with "Snap-on" ratchet oil (not grease). Do they send different lubes depending on the style of ratchet mechanism?

On ours the 36t uses grease & the 60t uses a thin oil.

What color is the Lucas? If it's not red I may try some.

It's green, I just bought a bottle of it a couple days ago for head bolts on my car when replacing the head gasket. The bottle says it's semi-synthetic. If you pay for shipping I'll give you what I have left. I don't know if it'll be any cheaper than buying it locally though.

I'm confused how this permatex ultraslick stuff can be "sticky" "tacky" and really viscous, yet still leak out of the ratchet.

I'm really trying to resist buying it...especially if I only need a few drops.

I put some wheel bearing grease in some dual 80's and it felt real smooth, but after just a few turns of the ratchet, it started getting clicky again, like it doesn't want to adhere to the teeth at all.

Does permatex last - does it keep your ratchet smooth even after several uses?

by the way, I've tried plain MINERAL OIL in ratchets, and as you might suspect, it's too thin.

After just 2 uses, it started getting loud again. I opened it up and it looked like it actually evaporated. I guess it all just leaked out.

It really doesn't leak out, it gets pushed out by the rotation of the gear - but only the excess gets pushed out. With it being so tacky, what the gear needs stays on the gear. For a course tooth ratchet, it's the end all be all cure. ;)

Edit!! - Is that course tooth or coarse tooth? :headscrat

Someone asked about something other then "red" stuff. If you want the same stuff but a different color try the AC Delco assembly lube. Its the same stuff but BLUE.

I didn't have any of the permatex stuff but I did have a bottle of the Delco stuff on the shelf. Was pleasantly surprised with what it did to my old craftsman rachets. Now I just have to do the rest of them.

I agree with the lube master's assessment :D

And I believe it's 'coarse', but don't trust me, I'm a stupid foreigner... :)

I think that sums it up very well.

I also tried it on a Cman pro 60 tooth and wasn't all that happy. Seems to viscous for fine teeth (at least at the current temperatures, it snowed last night here in Houston...)
Doesnt work well in the Cman 60 tooths for some reason, its amazing in Snappy dual 80's though!
I wouldnt use that icon in a thread talking about lube :lol_hitti

I got really board at work and cleaned the permatex out of my 3/8" dual 80 and tried Royal Purple MaxFilm, it was ok, but just not as good as permatex, I think the viscosity has alot to do with its efficacy.
Its the first time I've been let down by MaxFilm btw

The RLL worked wonders on my LV70 (3/4) it's 20 tooth and each tooth is huge. It's really improved the action very smooth and quiet now, surprisingly so for such a coarse gear. I think the results may have something to do with how clean the parts are to start with as it doesn't seem to stick well if the parts aren't reasonably clean of old lube to start. It also seems to get better after a day or so.

Round head SO's don't seem to take well as I've ended up cleaning it out in favor of something thinner in each case.

Hmm... I didn't try it in the Dual80s since my Cman 60 didn't like it either. Maybe the dual pawls don't bind even with a higher tooth count... Which size Dual80 did you try it on?

I think you make a very good point there.

I dont know the reason, It also makes the 60 tooths self reverse, again I think the single pawl is to blame for this

So, did you try the permatex in all three 80s? (T, F, and S)
Did it work in all three of them?

uhhh... I used it in my 3/8" FHX80, its the only dual 80 for now, hopefully that will change soon, but prob not, I"m broke :(
I would ASSume the results would be similar in the 1/2" and 1/4" versions

But you started with the right one :D
My FX80 is my go-to ratchet ever since I got it...

I was asking because there might be differences since the teeth are
different sized on the smaller and larger ratchets. And I don't have the
SO superlube (or whatever they call it) handy to go back to...

So after the kid's homework is done and checked, I'll be heading out to
the garage to try it out on my stubby 3/8" one. :bounce:
