I feel bad that anyone paid that much for the set, considering most places are giving it away for free when you buy the metric set...

Y'know, re-reading that, it seems more like he was cut-pasting the description for multiple auctions, and not so much that he's trying to pass these off as anything else. He's got a number of other auctions running for what appears to be legit truck-brand stuff.

It says made in usa at the top but it also says brand is gear wrench. Still is a little misleading though.

Yes it does. Follow the link. In the "Item Specifics" section, shaded yellow, it specifies Country of Manufacture: United States

Hmm, come to think of it ... could mean United States of Mexico.

Those look like long handle wrenches.

That's about retail on these at home depot (with a tray); if I have the right set (extra long pattern). Would I pay 110 bucks for some taiwanese wrenches? Nah.

I'm guessing the guy didn't know these existed rather than thought they were expensive wrenches. It happens on ebay from time to time.

Yes it's annoying when sellers do that unbridled cut and paste thing. I hate that. So what happened here, the guy just payed about full retail plus another 10 bucks shipping for a used set of wrenches. Is that about right.

Perhaps the guy knew they were available retail, but believed the "made in USA" thing so payed extra. Being older wrenches it's entirely possible he could have thought they were previously US made. If this is the case then he did get ripped off by the sellers disregard for the truth.

There are 1000's of incorrect listings on ebay. It's always buyer beware on Ebay, although current refund and item decription policies favor buyers, you have to know what you're buying.

MATCO never made the extra long ratcheting wrenches pictured in SAE. they did make the up to 15mm in the USA but, they've been replaced with Taiwan made versions for more than a few years now.

The seller probably didn't list the set number because he hdoesn't know what it is as there's no packaging.

Yeah, they're the GearWrench XL Gearbox double-box long ratcheting wrenches.

The 9-piece SAE set (what's in the eBay auction) is $65 on Amazon right now, about as cheap other places, and has been, at least for the last several months, a freebie given away when you buy the metric set of them.

I don't see that the seller was intentionally trying to mislead anyone, it was probably an oversight due to them listing tons of stuff. Yes, it *****, yes, sellers should be more careful and make sure everything is accurate. No, there's not likely any nefarious business happening here.

Devil's Advocate, sure, but this isn't keyword spamming. Nothing in the title of the auction says anything about the brand names or COO, which are what are utilized for search - the item description is not utilized for such.

Where does it day made by snap on, Matco or whatever? I see tools from snap on, Matco extra but that's just simply saying he's selling tools from those brands in other auctions.

If your going to buy from eBay be smart and do your research on what you want. Otherwise is your own dumb fault, these guys are just amateur salesman and people selling stuff they don't want they don't know anything about what their selling a lot of times.

Placement of said (key)words in the auction will bring more viewers to the auction, in hopes of the seller to draw in more bidders and a higher price.

If he put them in the title, eBay would be more likely to do something about it.

When you have 2 of something to sell, run the same auction, one with keyword spamming as above, and one without. Then report back on your number of viewers. :beer:

evilBay searches can be done on title only or title and description, so yes, words in the body of the post can lead you to it. It's in Advanced Search - gives a number of options for searching, very useful.
There was one seller who had a list of at least TWO HUNDRED manufacturers' names in his post. I got sick of being led to his posts where he had NOTHING for sale by the brand I was looking for. I reported him, every post, every day for close to a week ... he's gone now. I doubt I can take full credit; surely he annoyed many, many buyers!

P.S. I did email him first, asking nicely to please stop doing that because it wasted my time. He refused, then I reported him.

This depends. Are these made in china now? If so it might be some sort of taiwan vs. china equivalency deal with the price people are willing to pay. The taiwanese tools were apparently well made not sure if the new ones (if they're chinese) are equivalent or justify the asking price.:dunno:
