I also found a couple new ones for the Journal...
The first is a little "larger" Prentiss. I already had the 2 smaller ones, with 1-3/4" Jaws, but the new "Bigger" one has full 2" jaws, lol!

And this might be my new favorite...
I have seen 100's of railroad track anvils, but this is the first railroad track Vise I have come across... The rear jaw was dovetailed and hot fit (I assume) on to the anvil end. I couldn't pass this one up...

Your 5196 comes from a good bloodline...:beer::beer:

The red vise is a "Properly" restored 5196...

The next two are photos of a 5196 in almost pristine "new" condition...this vise sold on Ebay for more than $ 265.00/including freight...I was in on the bidding, but it exceeded my budget:drool::drool::drool::drool:

The last photo, with the universal measuring devise, is a 4 1/2"/77 lb/5197 that belongs to a member of this board who will not let it go...I'm preparing the voodoo doll for its pins...very soon...:evil::evil:

Helluva nice vise, you lucked up on...watch your back!!!!:rocker::rocker:

Hah, That first picture is one of vises. I've been trying to get an SD card, full of vise pictures, recovered due to it being reformatted and erasing all the pics. I wish i hadn't sold that one but you know how much it went for an i could of used the money instead of the vise at that time.

Thanks for sharing the pic, oldldh!!

Here is my Athol #711 with the threaded in rachet handle. A shot of the patent date on it and a bad picture. (the only one I had on hand) The rachet feature only works good if you have something in the jaws to put pressure on. If you pull out the handle to disengage it will still move the jaws.

I love that railroad vise. That's a one of a kind. Who ever made it was a machinist and an artist.

small bench, all the room I have right now with sharing a one car garage with two roomates. the large vise is an aprentice #55 and my ridgid 4" chain vise. really wanted a 6-8 inch chain vise but the price was right on this one. Always have my ridgid tri-stand vise for more out of the garage type work.

I was headed home from work this afternoon and went by a house to check out something i saw earlier that day. It appeared that some people were having a yard sale but were already closed down for the day.

Once i arrived, i ended up meeting the 2 brothers that lived in the home and they happily allowed me into the garage to poke around. It was completely packed with stuff from their combined occupation as contractors.

I scored a big Plomb wrench and dug 2 vises off a shelf. One was a little Craftsman with the 2 "arrows" on the dynamic jaw and the other was a real oldie.

Its got some extensive damage but i figured everybody on here would get a kick out of seeing a vise this old.

Did you just grab one of those on Ebay last week? I was ready to pull the trigger and I had to take a call. In that minute someone took it.

Big Caddy, gotta make a set of pipe jaws for that oldie. If you are interested let me know. I like it.

Zoomie, those three small vises are real sweet. I have a 2" Chas Parker No. 0 vise that is pretty old to. The jaws are missing and I know who can fix that.

Yes, it was a BIN for $49.99 plus shipping I believe... I already "deleted" it from my bought items folder, but I think that's right...
And yes, some habits are tough to break Nick, lol!

My new vise.... I was actually looking for a bench grinder on CL and when the guy sent moe the pic, this vise was in their background. I asked him about it and it was for sale as well. Best part is, he even delivered it. :) guess he needed the money.

Craftsman model 5196 / 4" jaws

Nice Score!

Check out my 5197 Refurb thread, PM me if you need any disassembly questions though yours looks good to go.

Just scored a Parker 974 for $30 from a pawn shop. Needs a retaining collar and no telling what's under the thick black paint. Jaws are so smooth they have been that way to begin with. Pics when I get home:)

Here's a quick pic. The jaws are grooved but pretty worn. Wonder if KMScott could regroove them. I have started taking it apart and cleaning it up to see what I have.

I also picked up this Wilton USA 1750 for $35. Needs new jaws but otherewise is in good useable shape and no heavy abuse.

Will that chunk of the slide missing have much bearing on its operation? I'm assuming that would only come into play if you needed to fully extend it? (I can imagine that would be quite a rare need on a vise that large.)

Hi all.

I had a exam question that asked what type of thread a vise closes with. I put national fine. Am I right?

Many thanks!

That one you missed, With a few exceptions they are generally (as mentioned) Acme or Buttress, and usually somewhere between 4-8 TPI. Ball/U-Joint presses are usually NF as it does produce more pressure for a given lever length, than a coarse thread, but that is a specialty tool

I wish I had the time and carbide tooling that I would need to re-cut your solid jaws. First the faces would have to be made parallel again, before cutting the serrations It would be easier to cut a pocket in both the Dynamic jaw and Static Jaw supports, add the threaded holes and install new replacement jaws. 2x easier to add new jaws then re cutting the serrations.

I was at my barber shop getting my one hair cut and I asked if he had any vises. Sure enough he's goes in back and came out with this pristine C 2 dated 12-87. with 90% of its original paint. I'm asking my priest next time I attend church. Everybody's got vises!!!

KMScott, I will have to take some more pictures. This is a 4" Parker with the vertical pinned jaws that are so hard to make. I don't think you make jaw inserts for these yet.

If those are 4-3/4 wide then this weekend I am cutting serrations in four different sizes. 3, 4-3/4, 6" and the 8" set. I have been wanting to make these for a while and now I am ready. They are hard jaws to make. I'll post pictures when I get them made.
