Opened the door and removed a motorcycle ... some time later I replaced said motorcycle into the garage.

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Not in my garage, but at my parent's shop last night (haven't gotten all my tools moved over, and their oil change pit comes in handy).

Replaced leaking o-rings in the drain valve for the fuel bowl on my 2000 F250 Powerstroke, had been leaking for several months I think due to the diesel smell I was getting through the vents, but in the last 2 weeks it got really bad, filling up the valley, leaving sizable puddles and soaked the clutch causing it to slip. In just the time it took me to park in front of the shop door, go inside and open the door from the inside and pull in it left a 4" diameter puddle of fuel, dripping from inside the inspection plate on the trans.

Replaced the fuel filter, and did an oil/filter change, and replaced a headlight bulb.

On the drive home, after getting up to operating temp, I purposely slipped the clutch a few times to try to burn/dry out the diesel soaked clutch, got into it hard this morning twice, and it didn't appear to slip at all, so I think I got lucky on the clutch. Pulling a tractor this weekend will tell though.

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Last night I had the opportunity to work on an 05 F150. The guy brought it to me stating that O'Reilys told him it needed a new catalytic converter due to a PO430 code. I explained that the code is merely stating that the computer is seeing something that is "questioning" the efficiency of the catalytic converter and to verify I would have to diagnose and make certain there isn't anything upstream causing a larger issue.

After looking over several PID's on the scanner and hooking up the DSO to the upstream and downstream o2 sensors it was obvious that the right bank catalytic converter does need to be replaced. While I had the equipment out I decided to check the left bank cat out as well. Although at first glance it appeared that the downstream o2 sensor was fairly stable after warmup, I added propane to enrichen and see how well the catalytic converter was storing oxygen. Turns out the left bank catalytic converter needs to be replaced as well.

I checked prices on the left and right bank cats as well as new oxygen sensors and called the guy to give him the quote for parts and labor. He freaked out over the price and said he would simply take it to a muffler shop and have the cats removed. I explained that this would not be an option as anyone willing to do that would be subject to a hefty fine even IF he could find anyone who would cut them out.

So after a couple of hours of diagnosing and spraying penetrating oil on all of the exhaust fasteners to aid in removal, the job went down the road to someone who will do it cheaper. Last night was pretty much a waste of time. That *****, as well as the fact that although the truck has 140k miles on it, the truck is in extremely good condition and has a lot of life left in it. I hate to see him take it to someone and have it butchered or cobbed together after I have been taking care of it for the past several years for him.

Spent nearly seven hours deburring and trying to clean up a pair of brand new Mopar Performance valve covers for another 2-tone custom job ... straight up, the castings are ****. And over the last couple three years they've done nothing except get worse and keep me in serious job security. I'd bet there's at least an ounce and a half of aluminum shavings on my work bench ...... it's deplorable and embarrassing to me on a personal level that such things could "proudly" come from Ma Mopar. < smh >

Lesson learned would be that when a job has potential to be super expensive (like cats are for parts alone), you should let the customer know what they may be in store for first so you don't waste your time.

Did you at least get paid for the diagnosis?

I would hope you got paid for your time and told him to lose your phone number when the cheap bargain basement job he chose to go with turns to ****. When I had my own shop I had a large sign behind my desk that said... You can have it fast, you can have it cheap, or you can have it right, pick ONE.

Unfortunately I did not charge the guy for the diagnostics. I work on a lot of this guys vehicles and have never had this happen before so I was kind of shocked when it did. I mentioned to him that the cats could need replacing but lets diagnose it first to avoid unnecessary repairs if it does turn out to be something else. I was so sure he would have me replace the cats if needed that I even sprayed down all of the fasteners to aid in disassembly while I was under the truck.

It wasn't until after the telephone call with the quote that I realized I was out the job. I thought about charging him for diagnostics but then he did tell me that O'Reilly's did tell him that he needed a new catalytice converter. I didn't tell him anything he didn't already know I was just trying to ensure the repair was done properly and completely to save him damaging a new catalytic converter. I really didn't think it would backfire on me.

I guess lesson learned and food for thought in the future.

I like the idea of $50 for the diagnostics and if you proceed with the job, the diagnostic fee is waived.

It gives the client an understanding that checking all that costs time/money but then they feel they are getting a deal if they get the work done by you.

I couldn't agree more. What is funny is this guy came to me about 3+ years ago referred to me by a local auto parts store/counterman. After completing the first job for him he made the comment about how great it was to finally find someone who he could trust and didn't have to worry about how the job was being completed after dropping it off. Ever since then I have worked on everything from his lawnmowers/snowblowers to his, his wife's and kids daily driven vehicles and even his boat although I hate working on boats. He has never questioned anything before and I have even "donated" a few small odds & ends jobs because I know he trusts me and comes back. This has been the first time for this and so I guess that is what has thrown me off.

It is not the end of the world, it is just a different experience for me is all. Again, I just chalked it up to a learning experience.

I have thought about doing this but really haven't had the need to in the past because I have always ended up doing the job in the long run. I may have to adopt this policy going forward.

Thanks.

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Preload set on the reconditioned milling machine spindle. Had it all down to parts, cleaned and reassembled over the last weekend. While that was running in I started disassembling the Alba 1A 10" shaper I had sitting for over a year. Fixed my daughters' pretty pink princess umbrella that had the handle snapped off in the car door while the shaper parts were soaking in degreaser. Halfway through stripping the paint off when I got called in to fire up the BBQ for dinner. Good day in the workshop.

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Not today, but this last weekend…

I wanted a new extra power distribution box for my Jeep project. I built one before, but after I had it all together, it didn't exactly fit my needs.

I got 3 more fuse relay boxes out of 90s Jeep Cherokees, and pulled all the wiring pins out of them, and then rearranged them to do what I wanted.

IMG_4961_zps0864eb05.jpg

I put in 2 relays for my rear window, and put in 2 relays for my door actuators to work with the alarm. I have the HEI going thru a relay, and made 3 fuses off a relay for run/start, and 3 for constant hot.

The new one ended up like this. Everything ends in a plug, and I still have spare fuses and 1 spare relay. I will need external relays for my lights that I will mount on the fender wells.

All installed:

Re: What did you do in your garage today?

Well, I started off wanting to fix the cooling fan on my old Marquette battery charger when I realized that I needed more light so I dug out an old articulating arm light and mounted it on my bench. Noticed for the umpteeenth time that my sinks legs were wobbly and drilled some holes to bolt them firmly. The snap in design just ain't right.

Got the motor out and needed to drill out a couple of rivets and my brother was using one to mount the rocker panels on his 70 Mustang so I grabbed the cordless...dead batteries!!

Popped a battery in the charger and sparks flew. Opened the charger looking for obvious burned solder joints or puffy caps. Some corrosion, one nicely desoldered joint and a crisp spider were my first sights so I cleaned it up and resoldered the joint...nothing so I need to review my C3 options. Looked at my new shop clock and noticed it was 9:00 so I burned a trail home to discover that I had failed to reset the shop clocks for daylight savings time. But I had hit a stopping point and cleaned up so I watched American Pickers.

Trying to get my wood stove set up before winter comes on full tilt, made up some side and rear heat shields from 26 guage sheet metal and made up one of those cone chimney flashing things you need for the roof, good redneck stuff

Cummon Nuts lets see them!

Sorry but I didn't have any pics last night. Before I was finished, we got paged out for a leaning telephone pole. It was raining and I got wet. When I came home, I wanted to finish welding the last one, get them cleaned and painted so I could put them up today. If it weren't for that page, I'd have taken a picture last night.

The pics as requested....

2 ladders so I needed 4 brackets or 2 large brackets, I went with the 4 smaller brackets.

Size reference, back wall mount 12" tall and the horizontal part is 1/2" sq tubing 6" long.

Believe it or not the guy called me back last night and wants me to proceed with the repairs. I don't know if he called around and found out that nobody would cut/weld in cats or if he just needed time to sleep on it and mull it over. He just mentioned that he didn't want his truck cut/hacked up.
