So after a couple of hours of diagnosing and spraying penetrating oil on all of the exhaust fasteners to aid in removal, the job went down the road to someone who will do it cheaper.Last night was pretty much a waste of time. That *****, as well as the fact that although the truck has 140k miles on it, the truck is in extremely good condition and has a lot of life left in it. I hate to see him take it to someone and have it butchered or cobbed together after I have been taking care of it for the past several years for him.
I would hope you got paid for your time and told him to lose your phone number when the cheap bargain basement job he chose to go with turns to ****. When I had my own shop I had a large sign behind my desk that said... You can have it fast, you can have it cheap, or you can have it right, pick ONE.Last night I had the opportunity to work on an 05 F150. The guy brought it to me stating that O'Reilys told him it needed a new catalytic converter due to a PO430 code. I explained that the code is merely stating that the computer is seeing something that is "questioning" the efficiency of the catalytic converter and to verify I would have to diagnose and make certain there isn't anything upstream causing a larger issue.
After looking over several PID's on the scanner and hooking up the DSO to the upstream and downstream o2 sensors it was obvious that the right bank catalytic converter does need to be replaced. While I had the equipment out I decided to check the left bank cat out as well. Although at first glance it appeared that the downstream o2 sensor was fairly stable after warmup, I added propane to enrichen and see how well the catalytic converter was storing oxygen. Turns out the left bank catalytic converter needs to be replaced as well.
I checked prices on the left and right bank cats as well as new oxygen sensors and called the guy to give him the quote for parts and labor. He freaked out over the price and said he would simply take it to a muffler shop and have the cats removed. I explained that this would not be an option as anyone willing to do that would be subject to a hefty fine even IF he could find anyone who would cut them out.

Mike.
Lesson learned would be that when a job has potential to be super expensive (like cats are for parts alone), you should let the customer know what they may be in store for first so you don't waste your time.
Did you at least get paid for the diagnosis?

Unfortunately I did not charge the guy for the diagnostics.

I like the idea of $50 for the diagnostics and if you proceed with the job, the diagnostic fee is waived.
It gives the client an understanding that checking all that costs time/money but then they feel they are getting a deal if they get the work done by you.
Finished the welding on my custom wagon. Paint is next.

My first post. Hooked up my Reznor 45K BTU Furnace that I bought for $50 bucks off CraigsList.

Cummon Nuts lets see them!
Made some lights with extra parts I had.
Not today, but this last weekend…
