Does anyone know of a compendium that lists what manufacturer makes what brands of ratcheting wrenches? I'm considering buying a new set, but I want to spend too much money just on rebadging...

No list that I know of. It sometimes does make a difference whether you are referring to reversible or non and 12pt or spline. Also are you referring to old school or modern?

Gearwrench is made by Sata (China) which is also owned by ATG.

ATD reversibles are made by Kabo (Taiwan). I don't know if the non are.

The black chrome reversible Protos are probably made by HI-FIVE (Taiwan). I don't know if the non are.

I have ones from Snapon, Gearwrench,Kobalt, Eastwood, Pittsburgh (Harbor Freight), Craftsman and Crescent. The Gearwrench are the ones I prefer.

So a Chinese company makes much of their stock in Taiwan? :headscrat

The older style is coarse toothed and riveted together. The modern is exemplified by GW, initially in nonreversible.

Oh. Like the stamped plates with ratchets sandwiched in between? I'm not talking about that type. I'm talking about a modern, combination-wrench-looking tool.

The mastercraft maximum lineup at Canadian tire is all made by Gearwrench(and stamped on the backside). Everyone seems to like them and they go on crazy good sales. I bought the metric/SAE/stubby metric/and stubby SAE all in a combo for 89.99 last year and have been quite happy with them.

Hmmmm... I recently considered a complete SAE and metric set (8-22 for the metric, and at least as big a range for the SAE) for $150. Passed be cause I have no use for the SAE, but now I'm thinking it might be an OK deal. But it'll mean back to having Mastercraft tools in my box!

If you dont need them tomorrow wait and the full 4 set comes as a combo for under $100, if the mastercraft part bothers you flip them over and they say Gearwrench

When you see a wrench or ratchet with either a slotted screwhead like that or a push-through reverse in its place, it's usually made by Kabo. They make very good tools as far as I can tell, usually rebranded for importers. Their ratchets are considered "gearless" IIRC, as they don't have a typical pawl.

E.g. Cornwell ratcheting combos are made by Kabo.

FWIW, Kabo is pronounced KAY-bow (bow as in bow-and-arrow).
