Not even a clue whats included. I think to even attempt to get rid of the stuff, you have to part it out.

There was a similar (possibly same) listing in the Chicago CL last week. Take a few friends along if you go look could be a setup.

Even selling a box 3k cash is long term sell, no one has that much cash..his tools may not work for all mechanics. Most techs lately buy there basic tool set Snap on and the rest go with asian tools. No need to have 80k of SNAP ON TOOLS

"snap on tools/ tool box - $40000 (mauldin, s.c.)
for sale as whole package: $80,000.00 worth of snap on tools with a very large tool box, for $40,000,00. Auto tech is retiring. Immaculate condition. Snap on tools are the best in the business. Their product is the finest and they stand by their tools. Owner has been with employer for over 30 years.would be great value for someone serious in this line of work. We will not finance, cash only, call only. 864-420-1834 ask for j.r. No texts. Will give more details by phone. Cash and carry only -no money grams- no paypal- no shipping by us. In person dealing only. No,no, scammers! Face to face only! [that is fourty- thousand] $40,000.00 will post pictures soon"

"Snap on tools are the best in the business" If you're looking for the type of person who will pony up $40,000 in cash for equipment, would you expect the person to not already know about Snap-On, or at least to have done research before hand?

"We will not finance, cash only" One of the main advantages Snap-On provides their customers and it's not included?

"Cash and carry only" For $40,000, are you fecking kidding?

"NO, SCAMMERS!" This is probably about as effective as the "FRAGILE" labels stick on boxes..

Not a chance in hell. I'm betting that if you showed the Snap On guy 40k in cash he would sell you 80k worth of the same stuff brand new. As has been said, new guys starting out don't have that kind of money and old timers already have most of what they need. I retired 3 years ago and I bet I have enough stuff to put 5 guys to work other than specialty tools that I only have 1 of. The only chance this guy has of even getting half that might be to Ebay individual sets one at a time.

I swear I've at least seen the same "$80k worth of tools for $40k" in another ad a while back.

Even at Snappy prices, I want to see what 80 grand worth of tools must look like. And if it's for real, best of luck to him finding that one guy who needs everything he's got, has $40k in cash to spare, and is willing to pay what's probably around top dollar for it. That guy must exist tomewhere, hopefully they share an area code.

In other news, I wonder what percentage of that you could buy brand new off the truck flashing 40 grand cash, with easy warranty service and a driver happy to have a semester of his kid's tuition paid for in one sale. :pimpflash

These ads come up all the time, if on a smaller scale. "Retired mechanic selling off all my tools $50K lifetime investment - selling for $15K"

I'd like to know how these sales/offerings actually resolve. What do they end up getting for the stuff? Or do they just hang on to it until they die and the family sells it off...

This is kinda out of left field, but I am curious how much, on average, a Snap On truck typically carries.

"Oh, look! This guy has exactly the tools I need with no extras, so I'm not wasting money! And I can finally get rid of this briefcase full of cash that I had sitting around!"

How does this guy not know that he has to part it out? Someone show him how to use ebay.

I think they sit on it until my Snap-On guy comes along and pays them more than their collection is worth, who then pays to have it transported to a few different shops until the huge toolbox has worn out its welcome at each one, and tries to sell the contents and the toolbox separately for more than they're worth. :lol_hitti

I've gotta think that if you have $80k worth of tools, a whole lot of them would have to be cased specialty stuff. And a lot of that loses a lot of value and/or is rebranded anyway.

"Yes, dear. I'll put my tools on craigslist. As soon as they sell we can take that vacation to Europe." Followed by a CL post that obviously shows no interest in selling.

I am amused by these 10k and up ads that show maybe a few drawers and a blurry pic of the outside of the box. Usually a comment like "too much to list" and along with "paid 40 grand$$$, etc.."

I have posters in my area re-posting for close to a year. Not even the slightest edit to the ad or change in price.

My conclusion is that retired mechanics are crummy marketers.

Someone, probably a member here will purchase the entire lot for less than 5k (cash or interesting trade) and part it out over the next 2 years on ebay/craigs/gj classifieds, to make 20K in profit.

In my Pawn Stars "Old Man" voice: I'd be a buyer at $5,000 son and not a penny more!! :lol_hitti

Yeah, gotta be a scam, or someone in need of 40K cash for something. Plus what's with NO PICS! i know CL lets you do 8 pics. As stated, most of the stuff most guys have, and I'll bet for 40K, a person could buy a lot of that stuff new right off the truck.
Buyer beware-Bring a few guys with ya, and openly carry

It be a pretty cold day in hell before I would sell my tools. I'd probably keep them even if I sheared both arms off.

Ads like that make me think the seller really doesn't want to sell there stuff, but is throwing up the ad to appease someone who is nagging them about it - someone that isn't particularly motivated, but would dump it all if someone actually would pay that kind of coin.

That, or someone so detached from reality that refuses to believe that shiny brand-name chrome isn't actually gold, and doesn't hold it's value like they were promised when they bought the stuff.

We all have more in tools than we would like to admit but, we're talking 40k. If we start adding in diagnostic and general shop equipment then I can see the price start to jump drastically. General hand/air/electric tools, that's a **** load.

Leads me to a question. I know I'll never purchase one, but assuming we have a 20k toolbox included in the price. When you purchase a box, do you stick with a common color (black, red, blue) besides what color is "in" at the moment to help sell if ever needed.

^^^To add to the color question. I understand sometimes there might be some super rare color snap on might release every blue moon, but sometimes a rare color can be good or bad.

I remember that huge Snap On accumulation of tools that sold on Ebay in the United Kingdom. It sold for 55,000 pounds. I showed it to my Snap On Dealer, he told me that the Current cost would have been over 100k to replace. If you do a search, just google - Large Snap On Collection. You have to see it to believe it!

I helped a wife clear out a husbands work inventory post-stroke. It really sucked, but I can tell even now, that he understands what was done was for the best. It's just a special kind of hurt to see a man's livelihood go in one fell swoop.

My conclusion is that retired mechanics are crummy marketers.
Maybe getting a used bread van and putting the right logo on it and visiting some shops would be fruitful.:lol_hitti
