I don't even bother with sales in or near The Big City anymore. Too many people fighting too hard. It seems like some of them **** people up from Illinois, too...

The sad thing was that both sales were in the woods. One of them was like watching a roller derby from the middle of the track.

So I went to an estate sale this morning. They were drawing numbers and I got number 46. The first 30 were let in at first and I had to wait about another hour before my number got called. This was the last day of a 4 day sale and everything was 50% off today. I picked up a bunch of stuff on friday and decided to roll the dice and see if I can come back for some of the big ticket items for half off. Kinda kicking myself I just didn't spend the extra couple bucks and buy the tools I was eyeballing because it was pretty gone through today. Anyway... here are today's scores.

That stuff would have been gone during the first hour of the first day of the sale around here. Ya done well

I always soak them in trans fluid, it un-sticks the sticky and makes the good ones even better. If they have any issues after the bath I'll take them apart and clean them but the soak does a nice job.

The jar is one of those bathroom air fresheners my wife gets from the dollar store.

I'l check the sizes and model numbers.

Hit the flea market, nice day in the 50s, but flea market only half full, you can tell the end of the season is right about here.

pic 1:
Roper Whitney punch, well used and some surface rust, but works well - $2
chalk line, made by Bluegrass, $1

pic 2 and 3:
Craftsman drill bit index almost full of unused bits, $3 for it all
couple spare drills bits, FREE
Plomb 1/2-drive ratchet, needs a replacement screw but works fine, my first Plomb ratchet for $2

pic 4:
pair of old radio servicing manuals, first is "Elementary Radio Servicing" by William Wellman, 1947. 2nd one is "Principles of Radio Communication" by John Morecroft, 1933. VG condition for both of them, not a steal but worth $10 for the pair to me.

Brand new Unican 1000. Never been out of the box. The guy had the receipt for it, just shy of 400 bucks.

Walked away with it for 90 bucks.

Today was good day. I was first in the garage at this little Craigs List moving sale in Plymouth that I thought was going to be a bust and it turned out to be a retired ford tech. I cleaned out his two toolboxes of everything Snap-on and Mac and paid a good amount on cash for it. Here's a pic of some of the pieces.... enjoy!

Stopped in one of the local pawn shops looking for some good drill bits and found a 76 piece Irwin Hanson USA made tap and die Super Set. It's missing 2 taps, but not a terrible replacement problem. $25 later I owned it.

I used to go to college auctions, I'll second what you said. The big desks go for $5 to $20 at most, usually less, because most people don't have room to haul them home by the end of the auction, and most people don't want to move them period. That translates to less bids. I remember one auction, guy got 10 or 12 of those tanker desks, for $5 each, noone else bid and $5 was the starting bid.

Nine, I see one possible tanker desk about 1/2 way back; many of those are the 4 poster **** from about the 70's on. pass on those. They are barely worth scrap value...

Good luck with the rest of the auction!

Good luck!

Maybe you'll find some good items for small parts storage.

Lots of cool file cabinets!

Good luck!

I got one garage sale to hit in the morning. It's a everything must go! Kind of sale with Tools listed.

Thanks, good luck!

These usually go for $2-5 each, I have seen them go as high as $20 each for a nice one

Better bring a trailer with ya nine. I'd be like a kid in a candystore. I'm heading to this one tomorrow myself. http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/photopanel.cgi?listingid=1930063&category=0&zip=19734&kwd=

I'm sure the idiots who watch "American Pickers" will be there to skyrocket the prices. The area is REALLY rural so I have my fingers crossed.

The auction is less than 2 miles from my shop, me and my scrap guy will take my truck and his trailer all next week picking up loads(hopefully). Good luck at that sale, it looks like it's professionally run so the prices will probably reflect that but looks like some good stuff, no ****!

That's just one row of desks, there are hundreds of desks, probably 20 or so actual tanker style(I'm specifically trying for a Globe Wernicke). The other style go cheap and the drawer units unbolt easily from the tops making GREAT custom, under table storage. My neighbor has about 10 of them along the wall with 2x4 toe kicks stands and plywood work surfaces on top, excellent use.

Not a garage tool but I picked up this Coleman 426 3 burner camping stove for $30. It was made in 1972, only used a couple of times!

Sell that somewhere where ice fishing is real big and you should be able to get $50-$75 easy for it.

I used to use one of those in my shop for heating up Brewer's Pitch for lining leather bottles and beer mugs.

Not a garage sale but an estate sale. I picked up a nice Wright wrench set that needs a couple wrenches. Its a set 3/8 to 1 1/4. Its missing the 7/16,9/16,11/16 and 7/8. If you have this style that you have in the extra wrench box I would be interested.

A couple of second hand store stops and a yard sale. $31 for everything. Drivers are mostly USA. I got Craftsman, Husky, Proto, Stanley, Cablepro, Xcelite, Volvo, etc. Couple cans of spray paint, a shovel, wire stripper, mallet, drill buts, allen key set, a long 15/16 Husky (Taiwan). I also got a 12" Utica adjustable and a cool little Bonney mallet. I would like to find a replacement tip for the missing one. I also got a precision driver set, some sand paper, a small Sargent and Co paraller plier, Fiskars scissors and some other misc. goodies. I like the NOS horse shoe kit. Box is banged up but never opened, made in the USA.

Slim pickin's today. 7 planned stops, only tools were at one target of opportunity, and one planned stop. An estate sale was a complete bust (and should not have even been on the planned list, only they lied about having tools "we sold all those in the last estate sale!").

The mortise marking gauge and small eggbeater hand drill were $10 and $2 respectively. The drill is my second smallest and edged out the prior #2; it's a "Utility" of Brooklyn NY. (someone was asking about tools from NY?) and the marking gauge is from Sheffield England: W. Maples & Sons with nice brass furniture, and a micrometer style setting for the mortise width. Too bad it's missing the brass set screw...

Unplanned stop netted the two 1/4" rats SK RH and a Craftsman RHFT for $3 , and a buck for a "Ford" pocket caliper, I think this is probably my most unusual Ford marked tool... The RHFT is my first (which is odd, I bought my first 3/8 and 1/2 back when you could buy them new, and I did...). It did confirm one thing, the 1/4" is NOT 90T like the 3/8 and 1/2, its 84T near as I can count.

Well, it was almost a perfect day... I got the Globe Wernicke desk I wanted along with a ton or more other cabinets and things I will be picking up early next week.

Two matching(except color) GW desks $15
pic00502.jpg

Flat file cabinet in front of the pallet standing up, I won the entire pallet for $25

pic00503.jpg

8 Drawer card file cabinet on right, plus 2-3 other file cabinets on pallet for $10, I won two pallets like this.
pic00505.jpg

Round and sqare tanker trash cans, inside a pallet with 3 lockers and 4-5 Basketball hoops(no back boards or nets) for $40
pic00507.jpg

pic00506.jpg

all said and done, I got 10 pallets of items for $170. Lots more cabinets, plus some cool old meters locked up in one cabinet, more pics next week.

The only tools there were two Miller Thunderbolt welders that went for $300 pr and this Delta that I bid up to $300 before yielding out to a richer old man...

Nine4GMC you lucky Sucker!

Seriously impressive, even without the band-saws.

I hate the fact that most UK schools/colleges/universities now generally only use "chipboard" office furniture!
The number of teeth and unborn offspring I'd give to get a hold of one of those desks is.....high! :willy_nil:

I'm off to another car-boot sale tomorrow, but for now I'm going to bed depressed!

Good on you 9Four! the flat file looks to be one of the better sized, flat files (not too big) only one? or are there more hiding?

That 8 drawer a a great score. how many did you get? I got one of this past summer, and am gradually filling it with really heavy stuff. The drawers with those great roller slides don't even notice. A bank of 3-4 of these would be an awesome setup for tools!

Outlaw, can you take some more pictures of the Ford caliper? I never seen one before!

Sorry if this disappoints: its "Ford" (I used the quotes deliberately) only because of the case. the Calipers are "Executive" and don't have any Ford monograms on them. I suspect these were handouts and engineering types got them (Perfect Pocket protector cargo....). there was once a Ford assembly plant not far from here, as well as a number of Ford owned (Mostly) defense electronics plants all part of "Ford Aerospace" before it all got sold to Loral, (and subsequently to Lockheed)

Calipers "measure" in inch and metric and the back has a decimal equivalent table:

Nine, Great cabinets and desks those should keep you busy for a while. Out of curiosity do you remember what the band saw finally went for? That is a pretty desirable setup. Metal gear box, CI belt cover, looks to be in good condition.

Outlaw, nice ratchets. It was a little disappointing to see that the calipers weren't Ford themselves, but still very cool.

Cowboy that stove is in incredible shape for a stove over 40 years old! Nice find! I'm surprised about one thing though: The tank is the same as the 2 burner in size I thought the 3's had a larger tank. :dunno:

A collector will probably pay more than an Ice fisherman, considering the condition!
