You all find the best deals!!! I get so jealous when I go through this thread... By time the big reeds and prentiss and Wilton bullets make it to eBay they are already asking way out of my price range. I just need a massive 200 pound vise that I can finally bolt to my bench to call it done. (No clue what I will use a vise of that size for but I'll find a use for it)

And the dimensions of the Goodyear air hose reel are as follows: -0.375'': 21.5" H x 9.25" W x 20.75 (From Sears Webbsite) Vise jaws are a little less than half the size of the box, or turn the box upright (Or the vise on its side) and the widths match up pretty good.

And the Big Red Engine Leveler in the middle right of pic is 18.9 inches long according to HD. Vise Jaws little bit less than half the size of the box.

And that plaque is either a 9x12, or a 12x15. (Two most common sizes.) Looks to be spot on for the size of the jaws until you remember that the plaque is set back farther.

I could go on. Standard dimensions for the metal parts organizer on the left.

Average size of a bar stools seat.

Dimensions of the Milwaukee sawzall bo on the bottom of the bench. (I have the same box)

Measure either a bottle of gear oil, or a normal quart of oil out in the garage.

Or assume that if you cut the 2x4 framing that is on the wall into 4 pieces and stacked them side by side on the narrow side it would be about 7 inches total since they aren't "true" 2x4s anymore.

You gentleman have my apologize, I wasn't trying to be an ***. Just been up all night  and got bored. Decided to see how many things of comparable size i could find. :willy_nil

Holy ****. WHat about this tipoff? How about the METRIC Hansen Socket tray BEHIND the metal parts organizers on the LH side of the pic.

The dimensions from Hansons website for a 1/2" Drive tray are as follows: Size: 18 1/8″ L x 4″ W x 3 5/8″ H

Part of the tray is hidden, looks to be about 10 of the 18 inches doesn't it? What is visible is almost spot on for the 8 inch vise jaws!

Not too bad for a blurry long distance pic huh?!?!?

Also looks to be a 13 inch shop brush behind the bar stool. Two of the vise jaws laid side by side would be about 3 inches longer than that brush.

And the Tipton Gun Vises dimensions according to Amazon are as follows: 32.8 x 8 x 9.5 inches. Or basically 4 of those vice jaw widths put together. (Or divide gun vise length by 4)

What about the case of fuel injector cleaner beside the DP? I googled "Fuel Injector Cleaner 4 pack" to no avail. Tried adding the word "Land" in front since I thought that was part of the MFG name. No Luck. Then it hit me. The can with the white top shown on the box has the product info facing the camera. Made no sense. If it was a printed image, the company would have the logo printed facing outwards. Plus, since when has fuel injector cleaner been sold in a rattlecan? Duh John. Soooo, I found a pack of Pro Gard (Not Land, but GARD) FIC with the following dimensions: 10 x 8.8 x 6.8 inches. Looks to me that the vise is pretty close in width.

Oh man, I REALLY need to go to bed. The google Fu needs to be recharged.

One more: The electrical outlet faceplate that is mounted on the left of the center wooden post on the back wall. The dimensions according to archtoolbox.com are :1-Gang 2-3/4"
So, multiply that by 3 and you get 8-1/4". Nearly dead on for that vise.

Never ever mess with this man. My shop was messy, I hadn't been in it for a year. If I had been there, it would have been messier with projects.

Just finished my latest #23. So far the collection has 3 record vices, and I think I am now addicted so plenty more to come :D

After seeing the first Record 23 restore, I did one for myself. I found one locally on CL and though it was 50 miles away, it was only 1/2 mile from my cousin, so I combined the trip with some beers. Too bad it was raining the whole way, so I didn't spend any time looking at the vise----just grabbed it and ran. Found out the next day that it had a chunk missing under one of the jaws.

Some time in the Bridgeport, some JB Weld, and a few dowels later---solid as rock once again. Paint is Valspar enamel.

Arrrrrgggghhhhhh!! Just what I needed - another project.
Ensnared by this thread!
Looking over all the great iron in this thread, I became enamored of the kinda art-deco looking ones, like Shop King and Areoplane. So when I ran across this 3 1/2" Parker for only a little bit too much, I had to grab it. It came apart easily with bare hands- though I haven't attacked the jaws yet. The leadscrew looks freshly oiled and works smooth as can be. The leadscrew retainer is welded in place- is that normal on these vises? I was planning on taking it out to polish up the handle and hub. That'll be harder with it still in the jaw, but if the welds are original, I'll leave it in. It looks like the red paint is original, but blackened by a coating of old oil and grease which has resisted my efforts to remove it with normal solvents. Next step is paint remover, I guess. It shouldn't take much effort to make this puppy look like new!
Anybody know a good rattle-can match for the original paint? I don't think it was a Ferrari - red!

Craftsman 391-5188 Made in Japan. It's 4 inches (I think, it's in the shed now, could be 4.5 inches).

It was free, as it came with the house. I'd like to add a Wilton torpedo vise in the future, but they can be expensive.

I like the styling on those - wingtips on the body and dove's tails on the dynamic jaw. Nice job on the resto!

Here's my workhorse. My mighty 10" Columbian 10 RD M2. I probably use this vise more than all the rest combined. I've had it close to 30 years, bought it used for $25 and didn't realize what a gem it was until I put it to use. I use it mostly for woodworking, but have been known to press u-joints with it. It's currently aiding in the restoration of my newly-acquired Parker 63 1/2. Here, it's holding the jaws in the proper position for Kroil to work its magic on the jaw screws.

Ok guys, I just took ownership of this quite large 70lb Rockisland No. 142 vise. I for the life of me can't find any others online doing a search. Are these known by a different number? I haven't taken delivery yet so I can't get you any better pics until later.

It's an older one, so that's super cool. I'll google as well. Great find!

We had a nice Desmond Stephan 31 pop up locally on CL here last night, it took 2 hours for the guy to list it, sell it and remove the listing again. :( I caught the tail end and missed out.

I have the USA version of that, and was all set to re-paint it red tonight. I'll be exchanging the can and getting hammered green tomorrow. That looks great!

Did that come with removable jaws? Most of the old Rock Islands were like the old Reeds and had them welded/forged in. I've seen them start to separate in some old vises. If that's what happened to this one then maybe it was a reasonable idea to try to reweld it rather than attempt to drill holes through the hardened jaw.

How are the pipe jaws held in (if you have them)?

Had a chance this weekend to snap a pic of my monster vise. I got it from the scrap pile at the The mcphillips street rail station where my buddy used to work. The jaws are 7" wide and it is just over 32" long. I'd say it weighs about 150 pounds!

You are right on about the welded in jaws. I have a # 75 too (5" jaws) and you can see that they took a hardened jaw around 3/8 thick and welded it in place. Over years of use would crack the welds since welding Hard Tool Steel to Cast Steel would create a brittle weld. If forged in I would love to see that process, kind of tough to forge in jaws and have them end up parallel to each other. I think I can restore the 75.

The 143 is another thing. It was brazed at the square slider on the Dynamic jaw, pretty much a part vise, I have seen this type of break before on the dynamic square sliders. The pipe jaws are missing, dang, they are held in with long 1/4 pins that are threaded on one end and a slot at the other end to install.

Guys, here's an example that you can buy a nice USA made vise cheap. This new Armstrong/Columbian 204 M3 was taken for $149.00

I'll get more pics up soon. I honestly didn't take a tape measure with me to check the jaw width. The guy probably thought I was nuts showing up with a bathroom scale.:lol_hitti

That price MAY soon be Suckworthy, if this rampant vise inflation doesn't stop...:sad:

Yeah, You don't even want to know how much I just sold my restored Wilton Shop King for on Ebay. If the buyer is one here, he definitely won't be getting any suckage for that one! I was gonna keep it originally, but I decided I'm just not a fan of exposed screw vises.

If you figure in shipping, It sold for $108. After fees and shipping I only cleared $79. But I guess if you figure in the $25 I gave for it and the hours of restoration, I didn't "make" money on it. But I always tell people I'm a non-profit restoration guy.

Is anyone near this? Bid is only at $252 and this ends tomorrow afternoon? Would love to see the aftermath of this from GJ member! If only I could make it there and back in one day...

If I was close I'd want in on the deal, just 1 or 2 would suit me fine.
