I talked to Riley at length.

More important than anything is the talk he gave me. I'm trying to come to grips with it.

I am seeing that the task is still too big for me and Julie and our two sets of hands.

But we are making better progress. Just maybe not enough.

Maybe we can hire some help and then the dumpster would be useful.

What about your neighborhood group that works on the houses?

Good idea, and Riley suggested that. I already asked them, and no response. They're too busy electing a VP to replace me. The block club wanted me to go cut up a fallen tree, but I haven't the time.

Riley made a good point, obvious to everyone but me. I can multiply my effectiveness by hiring some help and using the dumpster, because there is only loading, no unloading.

Still got to talk the wife into letting go more...and myself as well. Letting go of things as well as control over things.

Bill I have too followed along with your last Thread and am following this one. I find it interesting and am hoping the best for you. I can understand Kevin and others frustration and applaud Riley for his offer and chat with you.
My only input is that you need to spend time sorting out you and your wife's mental health, and not sorting bricks. http://www.dcccmh.org/ On your last thread you had some dental work etc. done due to the lack of medical treatment and you did some corrective measures for it. What have you and Julie done since then? In my job I transport a lot of sick people which live similar lives as yours. Most are in the same age group as you, and most are on their last legs.
I hope words of concerns from stranger on this board will push you to get some serious help that you need. Or at least the next time the inspector shows up they will report you to someone that can help you. You may not see the need for help, but ask yourself when was the last time you or Julie took a proper bath or shower? How can you send your wife to work without clean clothes or proper hygiene? Bill you are a very smart and well written man but brother you need help. From one pilot to another please seek some mental health help before your life ends. I want to see you in your Dream Shop and not overwhelmed with all the “stuff” smothering you.

Why do you need two kayaks? how old are you?

why do you need and lawn edger? I dont think you have a spec of grass.

Why do you need a 3ph air compressor?

VERY good points.

I am 63 and she is 70. Both out of shape and I have rotator cuff injury.

This is about dreams and losing them and learning to give them up.

That is harder than you might imagine.

We bought kayaks and used them a couple of times and wanted to continue. But like many people, we haven't used them in a while. We took one on our last couple of camping trips and never put it in the water.

And you are right, we don't have hardly any grass. Mower and edger (We had 2 of each) are unnecessary. We gave away one of each. Perhaps it's time to lose the other.

The compressor is also unneeded, especially since I bought a smaller single phase one (A 6HP 60gal 220v vertical.

We are making do on the heat and water, but it certainly needs repair. And right after the cleanup, it is next on the list.

You are perceptive on the health issues. We have both quit going to the dentist. She never had any of the removals done. They want to take all her few remaining teeth, and she can't face that.

I had most of the removals done, but one jaw line still needs it, and sometimes they give me trouble. One gum gets infected and has swelled a couple of times. Once just a few days ago. Very uncomfortable.
So, after the clean up, this is going back on my list. But I am worried about the insurance situation.

And thanks for the link. I went there and will investigate it.

I know you guys don't want updates, but I need to keep track. And I want to admit finally getting it. Riley and Kevin are right. Putting trash out in the trash cans is too slow. It IS progress, but very slow. I have to chop big things up and since the cans don't have wheels, I have to strap them to a hand cart and roll them to an empty house. Then hope they get picked up, and if they don't,I have to bring them back and try again in a week.
Too slow.
I couldn't sleep (and that is unusual for me), and woke up at 4 and spent 2 hours dealing with the trash cans that didn't get picked up last week. After emptying them so they weren't overfull, and strapping them to the hand cart, I placed them for pickup. Hope they all go.

Today, I have an empty trailer, so I am going to load it with some of the things on the curb, mostly lumber. Here again, Kevin and Riley and others have educated me that it is inefficient to use this. I have to load it, and them unload it. A dumpster is a load it and you're done.

After that, my wife wants to go through the boxes that are on the walk. I know this is too slow, but it is the best that she can bring herself to do. The stuff she wants to keep will go into empty bins and into the house. The rest, we will call Salvation Army to pick up, or just dump.

The next step is to pull everything out for loading in the dumpster. I will start on that today, but we need help. I'm going to call my church's pastor and see if there are any kids that need some work. That should help.

Aluminum from the greenhouse will go to the metal yard.
Glass from the greenhouse? I'm calling some gardening groups to see if anyone can use it.

Sound like a better plan?

From my talk with Riley, and posts by some of you, especially Kevin, I finally realized what was driving my actions here. Besides the obvious reasons that people start hoarding, like the rush of the good deal, and the secure feeling of feeling you have everything you need, there is one more driving force. That is control. Your stuff is the one thing you have total control of, in this helter-skelter life. Like a teenage girl, who cuts herself, because her body is the only thing she controls, a hoarder resists giving up things, simply because they are his.

It's why I have resisted giving up things that I obviously don't need and can't use.

I asked Julie yesterday, about giving something that we had. She agreed that we couldn't use it and probably never would. But her argument was that it took too much effort to get, to give it up now.

Even I see the fallacy in that line of thought.

Now, none of these reasons for having something is bad in itself. I'm sure you all have bought something because of the rush of getting a good deal. Or have something, just to have it. Or won't sell something because you can't get the value out of it, that you have invested in it.

But hoarders repeat these actions over and over. Eventually they don't even remember what they have. And the original reasons (Excuses) for getting an item are so out of touch with reality.

I was talking to Julie about the limestone we have. One of her common excuses is that we will use it for our "Place in the country" someday.

Yikes!

that's just crazy!

And so are many of the reasons (Excuses ) that I use to rationalize keeping things that I have no immediate use for.

So it's time to let them go!

Anyone interested in a free 4" jointer, surface rust from being left outside under a tarp. Photos to follow.

I found this forum while searching for parts to repair my vise. I've enjoyed reading and seeing other ideas for my GARAGE. When I saw the title to this thread, I assumed it was about a GARAGE but in fact has nothing to do with a GARAGE. The OP has almost 4K posts to his credit..at a conservative estimate of 5 minutes per post (just typing, not including the reading/editing) doing the math that is 8 WEEKS at 40hrs per week of typing at a computer. Double to 10 mins/per post and you have 16 weeks, etc. Many have offered help, which says a lot about the type of folks hanging out here - but seriously, this isn't a GARAGE thread. Rant over and moving on to actual GARAGE storage ideas, welding, projects, tools, etc. Peace.

pieceofwork,
Welcome to GJ!
Our little corner of the internet is focused on Garages, but we wander into many areas of interest. And this thread will get back to the garage in question, after this hiccup is taken care of.

Speaking of progress...the city picked up the 10 trash cans I put out.
And my boss agreed to pick up the large horizontal compressor that he gave me, that has been cluttering up my yard. He needs it in the new shop and I need to get rid of it. I have a single phase and this is a 3 phase. Win-win!
And there is a guy up the street with a forklift who can help us pull it out and load it.
At the same time, I can get the Bridgeport base loaded into my garage!
Both big heavy items taken care of!
And two heavy weights off my shoulders!

Moved the vans around so I could load the trailer.
All the small boards and panels loaded on the trailer.
Stacked the short (4' length) 2x6's on a pair of sawhorses and a pile of plywood cabinet doors, ready for loading on the trailer.
Moved 10 bins to the front porch to take inside for Julie to put away.
Covered everything as it's raining.
Working inside for the rest of the evening.
Going to try frying a turkey, for the first time tonight, in an electric turkey frier.

Bill,

Check into dental schools at a university near you. They typically offer very reduced rates.

Pics of progress?

I should have taken before photos for the city, but just dove into the work instead. And since I'm in the middle, I haven't taken after, since stuff is moving through the space I've cleared (Where the big wood pile was. If I get a minute, I'll put together photos of stuff that's gone away and the area where the big wood and siding stack was.

Got rid of 8 rolls of insulation this evening. Have 6 more to go.

I have found places to get rid of 16 sheets of 4x8x 1 1/2 rigid pink insulation, 2 junk washing machines, another edger, jointer, band saw, table saw, 2 kayaks, a canoe, 2 utility trailers and the pop up.

That should clear things out a bit.

Cold out there today, so Julie and I got a late start.

Sun warmed things up a little and wore the new warm gloves Julie bought me.

The whole side sidewalk is lined both sides with boxes and bins and baskets of stuff. The city wants it cleared, which is ironic, since everybody walks in the street.
So I went through everything and emptied the boxes into bins that we emptied last week.
Took 40 bins around to the front entry for Julie to bring in, sort again, and organize. Everything that she deems unessential goes out to the trash. She is now doing that. This clears about half the walk. I will have the rest cleared by Monday morning.
Then I went up the street to help the block club clear a tree that had fallen, blocking a ladies driveway. Took the electric chainsaw. Let everyone who helped know that I would need their help in a week or so to move limestone blocks.
Tonight I will move the last 6 rolls of insulation.
Also going to rig up a light in the big shed and finish clearing it out, put the 2 bikes in the van, and maybe move the porcelain tile to the shed and start moving machinery into the shed.

40 bins of clothes.:wtf: You two really need to seek out some medical help. That's not ********, that's the straight up truth Bill. Most couple's in life haven't owned 40 bins of clothes in their whole life. And with the way you type it, the bins were sorted already, now it's going to happen AGAIN???

And forget about helping the neighbors. You need to concentrate on what you need to do and quit dicking around helping others. You need to help yourself first.

And you say that "tonight I will move the last 6 rolls of insulation". :wtf: Damn, how long does it take to move 6 rolls? 10 minutes, 20 with a break, and 30 minutes tops if you are screwing around?

After the last couple of years in reading about the ""Grunge Garage" and now the "Great Little Garage", I have come to the conclusion that you really don't want to change. The city coming down on you is forcing SOME change, but goes completely against your grain. The reason I say that is the fact that you use the excuse that you call yourself a "hoarder". And in doing so, it appears that you have a mental, or medical problem, and if you don't make any progress, you fall back on the title of being a "hoarder".

In watching the Hoarding shows on the Tube, never once that I can recollect that a "hoarder" will call himself, or herself a hoarder. But yet, you toss that term around freely anymore as an excuse for not doing anything.

I guess I can't grasp the reasoning behind the fact that you drop everything you are doing, and with a FINE hanging on your tail, to go down and help cut up a tree out of someone's driveway. Has that person ever came down to help you? Does that person even know your name? And when the Sun comes up tomorrow, will that person remember what you had done, remember your name, or offer a hand to help out in your plight? NO!!!!

So again, you post as to what you have done, but no pics.... dragging things back IN the house, to be RESORTED, then to have the items either sitting back outside or cluttering up a room again that had previously been cleaned out, if there is even room for that now.

I'd like to know, in the first place, when it comes to insulation, where did you drag it home from, what were the intentions for it, and why...when you gave some away yesterday or the day before, that you couldn't have given away another 6 rolls? What you SAY you are getting rid of, couldn't a place like the Habitat ReStore use it, or is it in that bad f shape that then couldn't. And if they couldn't, then why are you screwing around with getting rid of it a little bit here and a little bit there? From what I read that you have had a struggle getting rid of, if Detroit is in that much of a mess...one ad on Craigslist would take care of most items. Between "scrappers", the "ReStore", and people that could use items, you wouldn't have to be dicking around with things.

And 40 bins of clothes to be sorted again? Grow a set and toss them all. You store clothes outside in tubs under tarps. It's not normal and you know it. Toss the **** and quit making up excuses, and quit playing the hoarder card when it comes to buying, trashing, or getting people to feel sorry. Both you and Julie's health is not the best due to your living conditions. You both were going to the dentist and quit. In doing so, you just bring your health down further. That is not anyone's fault but yours. That is not to blame on "hoarding tendencies", that is to blame on pure laziness. If you both care about one another, then I would think that the both of you would do what you could to make sure your health is the best that can be. But you live in filth, yet you go to extremes to play the "feel sorry for us" card.

People has rallied around you Bill, from day one, when you started the "Grunge Garage" thread. You've been offered help numerous times but always made an excuse. People have spent hours on the site making suggestions, offering help, and whatever else. Now don't you think you owe the members something other than dragging them along? And going down and helping a neighbor that you won't get anything out of doesn't cut it. You need to Man Up and stand behind what you say you are going to do, and just stop the B.S. If a person actually needs help, and they are on a website and a thread about needing help, most will take everything to heart and follow suggestions and not just lead ones along. You on the other hand, tend to feed off of replies to the threads. If you were serious about cleaning up your act, you would have accepted offers a couple of years ago. But instead, you go out and piss money away to buy stuff that neither of you need, then when things start coming down on you, well here is another thread just identical to "The Grunge Garage".

So Bill......why not just own up to what you are doing? You have been offered and you have accepted the roll-off at another members expense. Are you really going to prove worthy of that offer or just disappoint Riley and everyone else?

I didn't even read the above 2 posts after I saw the large bold print.
Yes, she must sort things again.
No, I can't throw them out wholesale.
Yes, I did cull a few things as I put stuff in bins.
Whatever other comments there are in the above posts will have to wait.

Got light in the big shed, so I can work early and late. Very cold though.
Tomorrow morning I will get the rest of the walk taken care of. That means loading a pile of 2x6's on the trailer, throwing out the old boxes, putting the last boxes of stuff in bins as Julie empties them.
You see, some of these clothes, and decorative items and kitchen equipment, are things we need. Clothes are going in my dresser. Glassware into the china cabinet. Kitchen equipment into the kitchen.
Yes, this is NOT the best use of her time or most efficient work method. But psychologically it is the best she can do.
I, on the other hand, am moving and discarding all the light bulky items I can get to, in the yard and sheds. Preparing to get at the heavy and difficult things.
Very shortly, all the insulation, bicycles, shop equipment, car top carriers and even lumber will be gone from the yard.
Then the big things will be the stone, motorcycles, washer and dryer, aluminum and glass.
Then buttoning up the sheds and general cleanup will be all that is left.
That's simplifying it. But generally how it will go.
When I have the labor available, in about ten days, I will schedule a dumpster.

Just one comment.
It's ironic to me, that right now, as I do way more then ever before, that there is so much criticism.
Yes, I hope for help from the block club. Told everyone I expected it. Maybe it won't come, but about an hour invested was, in my estimation, worth it. I did just the big (24"0 cuts and let the other guy do all the rest after I left with his smaller saw.
This group tends to polarize in it's advice. It's either all or nothing. On another thread, when the OP complained about a neighbor, it was either call the cops or mind your own business.
Here it is throw everything out or move.
Not reasonable. And I really need reasonable advice.
In a way, I am getting it.
If I take a middle course, between the extreme opinions, that is what will work for me.

So, I'm not getting rid of everything.
I am judging what time I have and what I can do. I am asking for and will get (Even if I have to pay for it), the help I need.

I have reached a watershed moment and am disposing of way more than I ever thought I would.

Of necessity, but that's OK.

And there are contradictory demands from this group.

You don't want me to take time to post. Claim it is grandstanding, and wasting time, yet you want photos...WTF?

And you think it takes just minutes to do things, I am just lazy, it should all be done in a few days, yet the mess is so monumental that I should just abandon the place..again, WTF?

I wake up and take some time to get going some days. I eat, poop, take naps and watch some TV...OH, and get on the computer. I may even take a day off to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family, even though I can ill afford the time.

So, what am I saying? I am saying that I have a plan and am working it. It's not your plan. It's mine. I'll take the hit if it doesn't work and the credit if it does. I am posting as an object lesson for anyone who is in a similar situation, so they can see it is solvable. I am also posting to get the same accolades everyone else here gets when they fix up a nice garage.

I'll leave you with one photo to show progress. Let me preface it with this. The yard it shows was nothing but a sea of tarps two weeks ago. No way to get into, across or through it. So it's still a mess, but very changed. The place I am standing while taking it was a stack of lumber and vinyl siding 5' high by 8' wide by 16' long with 1000 brick stacked behind it.
My feel for the project, is that this is progressing rapidly, and I want it to go even faster. Every day I decide to dispose of something else that I had thought to keep.
It is finite, doable (With help). Just wait and see.

Two posts deleted, one infraction given.

I think that tough love is okay and sometimes appropriate, but let's all remember that Bill is a decent human being who hasn't been unkind to any of us and treat him with the respect that he therefore deserves.

Thank you Bull.
I apologize for my gruff response to a fairly new member. I am sorry I haven't given the ultimate satisfaction of success in a more timely manner. Sometimes the entertainment on here just isn't quick enough for everyone.
Believe me, this has dragged on way longer for me, than anyone.
I would REALLY like to get to the "Well done" comments pretty soon!!!

I promised a photo in a post above, so here it is. This is the middle of the back yard. Camera phone so everything looks bigger and closer. Still looks cluttered, but you should have seen it before. All that is left now is a car top carrier, 2 slate chalkboards, mower, smoker, a couple BBQ's and a van rack. As mentioned before, it used to be 2 large piles of lumber and vinyl siding an brick and a sea of tarps and stacks of bins, plus what is left in this photo.

And in fact, the bins in the foreground and the railings and balusters on the left are now gone.
The van rack, blackboards, remaining bins, animal carrier etc. will soon be gone too.

6 more rolls of insulation OTD (Out the door). OTD is an abbreviation that hoarders use.
And yes, hoarders DO call themselves that word. At least the ones who truly realize their problem, and are trying to do something about it.
The people who you see on those TV shows are NOT at that point yet. These "Reality" shows impose a cleanup or intervention on these poor people for it's dramatic on air value. Since the hoarder themselves is often not even involved in the cleanup, it has no value to them. If you have learned one thing from following my journey, I hop it is that it isn't about the stuff. It's about how the hoarder relates to stuff in his or her mind. That's what has to change. Then the clearing and cleaning can really work. Most of the people on those TV shows have houses full of stuff again, within a year. They haven't changed. They just had their stuff taken away.
A hoarder gains security from the things he has. Security of memorabilia not lost. Security of things that he might need. And that is why a hoarder wants control over his stuff.
To give away control means a loss of that secure feeling.
The hoarding person must learn to feel secure without so much stuff. It must come from within. He must be the one to come to the realizations that the stuff he has isn't a security blanket, but an anchor, pulling him down. It's a strong pull that is very hard to resist. Even as I am ridding myself of things, I am trying to think of ways I can keep most of my stuff. Without it, I feel naked and afraid.
So you see, that is why I haven't welcomed the help offered. I want control over my stuff and I want to keep it all.
So how is this resolved?
The most successful method is acclimatization. It is a method used for a range of phobias such as fear of heights (Which I also have). Both these phobias cause panic attacks when the sufferer is exposed to the thing he fears, either heights of the loss of things.
Acclimatization weans you off the phobia by exposing you to the fear in gradually increasing doses until your fear and panic is gone. At each step, your panic level rises, and then, as you realize that you are OK, while still in the presence of the fear inducing thing, your panic subsides. It is really a fairly quick therapy that works. And it can be used with professional counseling or without. I have used it for my fear of heights. I went on a mission to subdue this irrational fear. I went to all the high places I could find, and exposed myself to it. At first I would cower far from the railing overlooking a precipice. Eventually I was hanging off a tree overhanging a waterfall. This is why I, and some other pilots who are afraid of heights, fly. It's a way to overcome this phobia. When I am landing an Ultralight, which lands a whole lot steeper than a Cessna or Piper, I feel a severe ground rush. Learning to cope with this is the most difficult part of flying for me. But I have developed techniques to deal with it.
Likewise, hoarders have to go through an acclimatization process, where they start out by throwing away small things, and as they deal with the fear, can move on to bigger things. The phobia of hoarding can be so bad that they fear throwing away trash. So the therapy process begins with that. First you learn to throw away some food wrappers, then you work up to ruined things that were once cherished items. Eventually you learn to discard even valuable, usable things that you just don't need.

So there it is in a nutshell.

Some of you may understand this. Most will not, never having experienced it. And you may wonder why I would let it all hang out and share this shameful secret with you all. After all, most hoarders work hard to go unnoticed, because there is stigma. They are called all kinds of names, as I have been. Dirty, lazy etc. Actually, hoarders work very hard to keep their situation in place.
I post to two groups. The other group is a restricted and private group of just 49 hoarders. There by special invite only. Chosen by the group owners from the net. The criteria is that they must exhibit an awareness of their problem and a desire to do something about it. These people know intimately the problems I go through. Because of that, they have a lot of helpful hints about what works for them, and might for me. But because we all share the same affliction, they tend to be a little too kind and forgiving while trying to be supportive.

This group, is more representative of the world at large. A lot more rough and tumble. Not as understanding by far. But you tend to push me harder. And I need that. I post essentially the same to both groups. And after I get beat up here, I sometimes go to the other group for succor and reassurance. So it is a good balance.

I have made much of this journey. I am not finished yet. I still have hoarding tendencies. But I have come a very long way. At one time, it got to the point of saving food wrappers and used envelopes. Those days are gone. I may never get to the point where I can throw away something just because it hasn't been used for a year, a mantra some of you live by. I'll never be on obsessive cleanie. But I do expect to learn to live fairly normally with usable rooms, with heat and water and a yard without piles of stuff under tarps.

In order for you all to see the improvement in the next couple of weeks, you need a baseline to compare from. Here are a few photos of how things are either right now, or within the last few days. Note that there is about 2 weeks of cleanup that have already been accomplished, so it was far worse, to start with. These photos are of the back yard which is divided into two spaces, and also the side sidewalk, with stuff on it's way out. A couple of photos show the front yard and walk, with the brick that was pulled from the back yard, being used as edging.
Let me ID what you are looking at:
Photo 1 - Front yard with brick edging. Fence needs repair.
Photo 2 - Front walk with brick edging and extra brick to edge driveway.
Photo 3 - Side sidewalk with all the boxes and bins that were pulled out from the top layer of the big pile of stuff under the big silver tarp in photo 5.
Photo 4 - Back sidewalk by the house. This area has been mostly cleared. What remains under tarps is a table saw and Bridgeport base.
Photo 5 - This is the big silver tarp pile. What is under it is some bags of lamp shades on top. Underneath is a stack of 35 bundles of shingles that need to be put up on the roof by way of the scaffold visible in photo4. On top of that is the 2x6x8's from a disassembled deck. Maybe 40 or so.
Photo 6 - This is the rear yard area. Here, are 2 kayaks, and under tarps, 2 motorcycles, a HF H press, 2 Southbend lathes, a Craftsman Radial Arm Saw, a dozen 2x4 fluorescent fixtures, a parts washer, steel plate and an anvil.
Photo 7 - Another view of the same area.

Not shown, but scattered around different places in the back yard are the following:
16 sheets of 4x8x1 1/2 pink Dow rigid insulation
2 junk washers
Aluminum framing and glass from a disassembled greenhouse
about 25LF long stack of limestone dimensional stone blocks of various sizes
2 rolls of wire mesh
3 workbenches
2 van top racks
a couple tables
Bandsaw
6 car top carriers
2 large speakers
a bunch of ladders and doors
misc drek

What you are going to see in the next couple of weeks is the transformation of the yard into clear spaces, free of all the above. Wait, watch and see.

Bill, I haven't checked your threads in awhile, I remember the old one, but if I remember for awhile you had stopped posting in there. I was wondering do you have heat and water(not from the neighbors) in the house yet? I had the power go out on me last year for a week, and has to go to a friend house it was just so cold. Hopefully you have been able to get those fixed.

.....I would REALLY like to get to the "Well done" comments pretty soon!!!

You got it .."Well Done Bill!!!!"
It takes a special "strong" person to see their issues, gosh, I know, I have my own.
Your thread (s) on your journey causes myself to reflect on my own collection of "stuff" and I am taking steps now, while in my 50's and in good health to tag items for a garage sale this spring. I am getting some cash for my stuff before everyone tell me to toss it all.
I was a bit amazed your still a work in progress, but I do understand....most can't imagine what you can collect in a 50 year period...a lot of youngin's here on the forum.

So WELL DONE BILL!!!!!!! Do ...what ya can! Hope you stay warm too!

[QUOTESo, I'm not getting rid of everything.

][/QUOTE]

Bill.....A lot of it is not about the posting itself, but it has to do with the amount of postings you make a day about moving this and moving that. When that is done, and in most peoples minds, on one hand, you want support, yet on the other hand, you're posting about petty little items which makes it look like you're spending more time on the computer than you are taking care of business.

Also a lot of the criticism comes from what people followed for a long time on the Grunge Garage thread. You were doing the same thing today as you did back then, and you are using the same excuses today as you did back them.

Along with that, you want support for purging ruined items, yet you go out and buy tools and such. In doing that, how can you expect to get positive comments? You have had a problem with water, sewer, and so on. You refused help to get it fixed, you could have paid to have it fixed, but instead you posted about buying another pop up camper when you already owned a dozen. And you wonder why you don't get positive feedback. You've needed your roof repaired for quite a while now, but instead, you chose to spend money in other places. You had a job and said you quit. You and Julie were going to the dentist, but in your own words, you said you both quit going. You say you are 63 and Julie is 70. You quit your job and she is still working. With all of that, what sort of positive comments do you expect? Do you expect people to say "Great job Bill, keep up the good work".

People cannot give positive comments when they are led on only to be disappointed. I realize hoarding is a sickness and is a mental problem. You toss the word around freely, and rely on comments on here and rely on 49 other "hoarders" to help you overcome your problem? If you realize in your mind that you have a problem, that is a good portion of the help that you need. But if you are bright enough to realize that you have a problem, then why can't you see the other part of the equation and get some professional help? You are a very smart man Bill. I can tell that you are by the way you explain things to others that have problems they run up against. But at times, I also think you're smart enough that you are bullshitting people at times to get them to buy into your plight.

You said yourself up above that while you are throwing things away, you are thinking of ways to keep it. And as intelligent as you are, and intelligent enough to explain complicated solutions to other peoples problems, then how can you not be wise enough to know that you can't store drywall outside for weeks, months, or even years?

Pictures you showed of your house in the Grunge Garage thread, you got to the point where a couple rooms were cleaned out. Yet in this thread, you said that you had to clean the rooms out again. On one hand you're smart enough to do it, post about it, and you did get many positive remarks by many members. But you let the members down, yet still want positive comments. This thread is nothing more than a continuation of The Grunge Garage. Quite a few members have offered to help you in the past, but you turned them away. You have made up excuse after excuse, after excuse for NOT doing things.

It was asked above in this thread, once by me, and maybe by a couple others......I never did see an answer, but what about the hangar that you have? At one time you were moving stuff into it. What about the property where you keep your pop-up campers? How many of those do you still have?

And as intelligent as you are Bill, have you ever set down and actually figured how much money that you two have just pissed away? You know in your mind that you don't use or take care of what you have, and probably never will. You've bought tools that you know you won't use, you've found tools that you didn't remember that you have. You shop Thrift Stores to buy someone elses throw aways, then put those purchases in tubs, under tarps, outside. In pics of the Grunge Garage, you had outdoor items in the house, and inside clothes and such stored outside. If you can figure out and explain architectural problems to people, then why can't you figure out something simple like.....clothes go IN the house. And yet you want support from people. Hoarding can be used as an excuse for a lot of things, but then again, so can laziness. At times Bill, you have worked very hard at doing nothing. Once the Grunge Garage thread was locked, you then stopped doing what you were setting out to do. You stopped the purging of trash, you quit your job, you quit going to the dentist, you probably quit going to the doctor. But you never quit buying. Why? Because it's more fun to play around like that, than it is to do what is necessary. What is necessary is too much like work. Just screwing around all day, or going around and cleaning up the neighborhood is more like fun, because you can walk away from it at any minute on any day. Everyday is something different. But when it comes to your own stuff that is basically the plight of the neighborhood, you choose to ignore it because fun, then becomes work, which you choose to avoid.

Like I said earlier, when the Grunge Garage got locked, you felt a relief, because all posting came to a halt. It started out that you were getting a lot of positive comments, but a few months into it, people saw it for what it was, and the positive comments came to a halt and the negative comments started. Now we are in a new thread a few years later, but the ingredients of the thread make up the same recipe of the last thread. There are more negative comments, and you wonder why not so many positive comments. When you make comments along the lines of "Doing what I am doing takes time, and it can't be done in a few hours or a few days". Well, no it can't. But you have had a few years. You're still carrying buckets of water, you still have the yard trashed, you still aren't working and Julie is STILL working, you are still screwing around cleaning up neighborhood properties (or was up until a few weeks ago), and it's still the Grunge Garage thread with a different name. I really don't think you'll get to many positive comments or a lot of support Bill until you actually take charge of things and prove to the ones that you really DO WANT CHANGE. You've let quite a few members down before and this is just a rerun. Somehow, you'll pay the fine that has been imposed on you, this thread will eventually be locked, and in another year or so, we'll see another thread start up that will be a continuation of the Grunge Garage, The Great Little Garage, only with a different name.

Not yet. And I can't even think about them until this emergency is past and taken care of.

Kevin,
Most, if not all, of the points you make above are valid. But to me, right now, they are irrelevant. They are in the past. Something no one can do anything about. All I can do is learn from it and work with what is in front of me right now.
And one other point. I am not here to make sure members are not let down. I know there is a group investment in threads here. And the group helped me along on the original thread, until I didn't move fast enough for them and posts got negative. When the thread closed, I was let down more than anyone. I didn't have your support and I just gave up for a while. I started up again because I have to get this done, and I NEED your support. I want to get the yard and house cleaned and the utilities and house fixed so that I can then start the real "Great Little Garage" thread. That will finally be a garage thread like you all have to show off!

Bill...Just so you know, I did support you in your first thread. I also support you in this thread. And like you, as with many others, even though we support you, we are also let down. If you weren't supported by the members, you would have zero replies to your thread. Support comes in the way of many different types of replies. You have to remember that with the internet, true emotions can't be shown in typed words. And I am for one, not the best at putting down in typing as to what I see and hear in my head if that makes sense. If none of the members cared, you would be talking to yourself in these threads. We all care, but we also get very aggravated. We feel that we are being led on, being bullshitted, and whatever else. If we were closer together mileage wise, I would do my best to come over and help you out any way I could, just the same as other members would.

It takes a hell of a person to bring forth on a public forum, showing and doing what you are doing. If I could do that on a public forum for all to see, then I could also let my guard down enough to accept help when it was offered instead of refusing it. I am very glad that you and Riley have worked things out and accepted his offer. You don't know Riley and he doesn't know you, other than being GJ friends, just as many and most of us are. But even at that, we pull together to try and help one another out in times of need.

And just so you know Bill......Nothing would make people feel any better than to see a posting from where you went from where you are now, to a place where you have everything cleaned up and The Great Little Garage come to fruition.

So Bill....even though you read negative comments, they all are not as they appear. Even the negative ones have positive thoughts behind them. I don't think anyone on this site wishes you ill will. And nothing would be worse than hearing that you lost your home because of situations that are really under your control. With water, sewer, and whatever problems, it's only a short time before your home could be condemned and deemed uninhabitable.

I know that a few replies into it, I stated that it would be my first and last reply, which as you can see is not true. I don't enjoy posting just to post, but I post that in hopes that something I say may be a shock enough to kick your **** into gear a little more. I don't go around looking for internet arguments. I wasn't raised that way. I was raised to help people out in any way that I could and will continue to help people out until the day they throw the dirt over me. I'm a little stranger than some people or maybe most people. I'm often a very misunderstood individual. But believe me when I tell you Bill, I wish nothing but the best for you. I just really hope that sometime, before it's too late, that you "get it". At 63 and 70 years old, it's time to quit worrying about material possessions, and it's now time for you and Julie to enjoy what few years are left on this world of ours. Time should be spent for fun instead of walking around piles of trash, wood, or whatever else. Hopefully you can open up your mind and eyes to things, and alter both of your now present lifestyles, to a lifestyle that let's you enjoy what should be enjoyed.

Kevin,
Just came in and skimmed your post, and dammit man, you brought a tear to my eye. I DO know you and many others support me, and I am so very thankful to you and the other members. Sometimes I'm just a little too sensitive. So I'll try to man up a little and git r done, for all our sakes, but especially Julie's and mine.

People have done a lot harder things. What kind of wuss does that make me? No, don't answer that!

And very soon, I will start posting photos of cleaned up areas...

Bill
