I purchased a Yost from Autopts back in September. He did a superb job of packaging it. The way it was packaged, it could have survived a fall from an airplane!

I hope you get many good years out of that Yost. I sold a 53 Lb Wilton 9400 last night and the seller asked if I was going to ship such a heavy item in just one box! A piece of cake!

Here's a question......I won this rusty 433 1/2 and I disassembled it and dunked it. I use Electrolysis as a last resort. I find it messy and high maintenance but it does take the rust out. Anyway, after de-rusting this vise, it had the usual rust like coasting on it. I gave it a bath in Brake Clean and wiped it down with PB Blaster. it now looks like I painted it Black. This vise is 100% naked but not painted. What's up? Oh, and its for sale!

Thanks Nick for the post on packing vises, I have many to sale and appreciate the photos on your packing techniques, where did you get the heavy paper and where do you buy your boxes if you had to? Thanks in advance.

Hi Kev,
Good question, for you and all out there, I buy the 300Ft roll of red construction paper. Usually its about $11.99 a roll, but I wait until they have a $7.99 sale and buy 6 rolls at a time. Its heavy gage and perfect. One roll lasts me thru 6-8 boxes.

By the way, your jaws helped me sell that 450S last night for the surprising ending bid of $515 . I had a few inquiries if they were, in fact, your jaws.

Can't tell you what happened, but I like it just the way it is. Slap some clearcoat on it an leave as it is. It's beautiful in all it's naked glory.

Almost every time...

Nick, thanks for the "Vise Packing Tutorial"...

By the way, I would just clear coat that mysteriously black beauty...

Here's a really old, 1945, Chicago Wilton C1 combination vise that weighs in at 60 pounds and has 4.5" x 1" jaws. It was in original paint when I got it but sadly, the paint was wasted. It's in remarkable physical condition however. and looks to have spent its time just sitting. Still works as well as the day it left the plant.

You've got two nice Wilton's there. I'm packing a 450S right now. The newer, heavier 450S I pack it two boxes. That lighter 9450 is right at about 70-72 lbs. If you ship that 9450 beware of shipping limits (Usually 70 Lbs) and that's a 9400 stationary next to it. Both nice. Wilton occasionally missed stamping them but not often.

I didn't think the 9450 was that heavy, but it did max out my shipping scale (so > 55 lbs). The HD (9400) was about 42 lbs.

I went back and found the date stamp on the 9450 which was 670, but I still can't find one on the HD (9400). Interestingly, the key on the 9400 is about twice as long as the key on the 9450.

Thanks. Hard to believe this vise sat there for 3+ weeks unsold. I was out of town and it was driving me crazy to see it listed and not be able to get to it. I called him right before my return flight took off and picked it up soon after I landed.

Hi Friends,

I saw a WTB ad in my local CL saying that they wanted to buy a Dodge Slide Set Bench Vise. Anyone got information and pictures of this?

Found another link to this e-bay sale with more pictures.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAP...5719&item=271087625719&lgeo=1&vectorid=229466

Identified the US Patent 2464630

http://www.google.com/patents/US2464630

Interesting vises. Made by Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka, IN. Not really heavy duty. The quick adjustment mechanism is pretty clever. Turn the main screw counterclockwise to loosen and you can slide the jaw open or closed. Once the jaw is closed on a part, turning the main screw clockwise sets the slide mechanism and then you clamp the part like in a regular vise.

Bid on one at an estate sale last spring. Should have bought it. Was in great shape; much better that the one in the e-bay ad. Let it go for $75 and have regretted it ever since.

See what you fellows have done. I wanted to get all the vises with car logos on them, and yaw keep coming up with more brands. I've got a Mercury but still needed a Studebaker and a Bugatti, and now I also need a Dodge. And come H or high water, I'll get them too. I've just got to muster enough courage to sell a kidney. Please tell me that's all of them.

Here's a little Stevens watch makers vise.------ Weighs 3 lbs.------jaws, 1 7/8 inches------was chromed all over.------ A recent E-bay purchase. Not nearly the deal b100 got on his Stevens ratchet vise, you can see on page 540, or Zoomies baby Prentiss he snatched off E-bay. They all but broke the law with their purchases. But I was satisfied with mine. Only thing missing is the stop peg at the back of the slide.

Here's an interesting vise I've never seen before
:http://stlouis.craigslist.org/tld/4207718080.html
It appears to have a reversible dynamic jaw, so you could grip something over the "anvil" surface to beat on it - gently, of course, thus having the blows centered over the axis of the swivel. Is that it, or is what appears to be an extra jaw face on the static side something else?

In a related matter, I have frequently advised members to post photos, not links. I find myself posting a link above because I could not find any way to get a screen shot of the CL listing. I went to Page>Save As; that saved the elements of the page individually, but not an image of the whole thing. And, only one of the pictures was saved full size. The others were only thumbnails.
I then went to Tools, and nothing looked helpful. I tried copy/paste, but the fullsized photo wouldn't even select; not even using Cntrl A (Select All). So, maybe some of those who posted links that were broken by the time I saw them just couldn't figure out how to get a screen shot either!
My apologies to any unfairly called idiots. Ignorance is another matter; it's curable. I would surely appreciate any help in curing my ignorance in this!

Might not be your vise but the same design. I had thought about getting one of these a while back. Moving the slide to the back gives you a wider jaw opening. I didn't even think of the work piece being over the anvil but that could also be useful.

Yes, the Northern Yost vise looks just like it, only the CL vise is a Wilton. On my workbench it would be pretty useless. There's never room to get that jaw out and slide it in from the back!

Northern carries the Wilton version too. That's the one I originally saw on the shelf at the store. I could only find the Yost on the website though.

I use a Mac but should be similar on a Windows machine. Right click on the image and select "Copy Image Location" and then then when you post select the icon with the mountain, and paste the image location in the bar when prompted.

Rob, doesn't MAC have a "print Scrn" button? that should work for whatever is on the screen... (You might have to crop to the relevant area)

Macs have an app called Grab to select and save any portion of your screen or the entire screen as a .tiff which can them be converted to a number of formats.

Jasons method is good also (quicker too, thanks) but still must be reformatted to a .jpg for posting here.

Re: The Mighty Reed 4C is Complete!

Does anyone know of a used 4C Reed Combination Pipe for sale?

There *used* to be one listed in the Houston CL, but the seller never contacted me back... :( It was missing the swivel base and the handle needed some repair too... Price was kind of high also.

You don't see 4C's up for sale too often, but they do appear every now and then. I usually see a couple on eBay around Christmas time. Best to use some of those CL search sites so you can search all of the US. At 185lbs, you probably won't find a seller that wants to break it down and ship it.

I know I would never sell my Reed 4C, I use it way too much. Unless you *really* need the size, a better choice for an average workbench would be the 2C... The 3C is also very beefy and much bigger than a 2C. It's handle is the same thickness as the 4C but a couple inches shorter. (Click on links in my sig for pictures).

I hover the cursor over the picture and right click. Then save image as... This saves it to your computer for you to do as you wish. You can upload to a hosting site or just add as an attachment to your post. You can also copy the image URL, but then, when the ad goes away, so does the picture.

THANKS!
This worked fine, saved the large picture. I thought it wasn't working because I could not Select the picture; I could Select the thumbnail. I've used this technique many times, but always on a Selected picture. It's a mystery, but it works! I just went back and put the full-sized picture in my original post.

I have one of those little buggers too, but mine is "fixed/cornered" mount...
That one you've got is really cool with the swivel base, very cool indeed!

PS, I think it's "just" nickel-plated... At least that's what I think mine is.

Take care, keep 'em comin'!!!

I am currently "sans Garage" so sold off my large Record bench vice.

This vice however I won't be selling as it was the first vice I bought with pocket money at an autojumble, aged about 9!
View media item 35384
Nothing special, no makers marks and it was painted blue during the restoration of my first car aged 16 (I was considering the colour for my Morris Minor, daft ideas of hot-rod Minor! :wtf:)
Might strip the paint off and tidy her over winter.

And just today I picked up this little Jewellers vice for £2 because...well it was £2!

I've had some old hand-saws come out of the e-tank with a black finish. It must be something in the metal. I was able to get these blades looking better with WD-40 and steel-wool but I don't think that would work on a vise. It looks nice though, good luck with it.

I had never heard the term "German Silvered" before... So I did a quick google search and this is what I found, I believe you are correct Sir! Thank you!

ZOOM

Nickel silver, also known as German silver,[1] Argentan,[1] new silver,[1] nickel brass,[2] albata,[3] alpacca,[4] or electrum,[5] is a copper alloy with nickel and often zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc.[6] Nickel silver is named for its silvery appearance, but it contains no elemental silver unless plated. The name "German silver" refers to its development by 19th-century German metalworkers in imitation of the Chinese alloy known as paktong (cupronickel)[7][8] All modern, commercially important nickel silvers (such as those standardized under ASTM B122) contain significant amounts of zinc, and are sometimes considered a subset of brass.[9]
