I don't know if this is a serious post or not. Its hard to tell anymore, but I'll bite: Why in the hell should Sears or any other tool manufacturer replace neglected rusted tools? Give your head a shake and don't talk so stupid.

FIRST If I was lucky enough to find the tools and was then told by the owner of the car that he did not want them and I could have them I would think "this is my lucky day".
I would then use the skills that I have developed along with the advice of this forums members and restor the tools. If the chrome was gone and they were rusty I would blast them and paint them. I would then use my hand me down free tools with pride. The work because of what I did. NO WAY WOULD I EXPECT A REPLACEMENT.

I don't see a problem, you wanted to abuse the system and they shot you down. I wouldn't expect anyone to replace rusty neglected tools that I found.

Yea.. so you find old rusty mistreated tools that you didn't pay for and then you are pissed that Sears won't give you brand new stuff?? :spit:

And how is a breaker bar hurt by being rusty? I don't see why they SHOULD replace that item.

Abuses of the system like this is exactly why companies have to crack down on everyone.

Now if the ratchet broke a tooth, then I can see it beign replaced.

Also, if you found these tools in a customer's car then don't the new tools belong to your customer? Seems to me like you stole these unless you asked the customer if you could have the old/now-new tools.

I am not a purist, i may have tried to take them back for replacement, but i definitely wouldn't be crying on the internet when i got shot down.

I really have to look at this post a little different, sure taking the tools was wrong but getting mad about the rejection is stupid. Sears has generous policy and WE ALL have taken advantage of it. you me everyone has milked this cow. Why clean a screwdriver, when they will give you a new one. sure its wrong but Sears has let this go on for a long time and people like the original poster(and me, head down in shame) have just come to expect this to be what Sears does for the customers. Flame me if you will,:) but i think that this is really the point.:)

Interesting thread, shows what a diverse group we are.

I hope the original poster is able to return the tools, and they all turn out to be rare ancient valuable ones. ;)

Its in our best interest to keep Sears alive, so maybe we should all give that a thought, unless they don't have a 1/2 off sale soon on all GearWrench.

i think the OP/troll has accomplished his goal........a long debate over something completely stupid!

Nah! he would be soaking up the sunshine, if he accomplished his goal. I'm packing to leave for a day, I'll grab an Allman Bros. CD for the car ride. I'll be a Midnight Rider, to make it home for Xmas. Have a good one.

Troll or not just go to another store. Remeber the $5 coupon? Some stores gladly accepted them and others said "corporate" said it was a fake. Usually any given area has about 3-4 stores in a 20-25 mile radius.

I just found a rusty Craftsman 3/8 ratchet, breaker bar, and wrench in the trunk of a 65 Galaxie we are restoring for a customer and I smile real big and march them right to Sears for a bright shiny new replacement for about $65 worth of tools.

When I get to the store the guy looks at me kind of nervous, puts his head down and starts telling me how the damage was obviously caused by poor maintenance. At first I got so mad I couldn't see straight. After fighting the urge and failing I tell him where to stick the rusty tools. I have been doing this for 30 years and have never had a question about a replacement I would start buying all my tools from Matco I went to lunch.

After lunch I spoke to the manager who basically said they are cracking down at the corporate level so I am looking for advice where to buy hand tools that are replaced without question. The sad part is I spent at least 7 grand with those bastards on tools, tool boxes, and mowers this year and the one time a year I take a few in for payback I get the long face.

Anyone else have this experience lately or is it just our store?

It is people like you that find rusty tools in a old car and try to take advantage of Sears that has caused the problems that legitimate claims are refused all too often. I would have told you to leave the store, and not to ever come back if I was the store manager. You remind me of the people that buy a $1 lottery ticket, and when they win, they ***** about paying the taxes... If you ask me, you are the *******...... not Sears... :(

Have a yard sale some day and look at the all of the people looking for broken Craftsman tools so they can replace them for new. It is like locusts watching it. There was almost a fight over an old screwdriver that I had used on paint cans that I had put in the 5 cent box. It creeps me out just thinking people will do this. After the first time, I quit putting any Craftsman tools out unless they were in perfect shape.

When that happens the honest breaks are so much harder to get replaced since the staff gets jaded vs helpful.

Wow 56 posts and counting over someone abusing the Craftsman warranty, kind of makes feel good inside to read honest responses about doing the right thing instead of screwing Sears and the car owner. Good job guys!! I'm proud of most of you!!:beer:

Why not just clean them up and use them, if the ratchet needs a kit I'm sure they will give you one and you can rebuild it and bingo ready to go for a little effort.

I have a couple of friends that work part time at our local Sears store. If they saw me try to pull a stunt like the OP did, I would not be their friend any more and I couldn't blame them for that decision.

Shoot, watch fleabay - boxes of busted Crapsman ratchets and ratchet parts show up from time to time, the seller saying how valuable they are since the high bidder can just take them in and get new ones.

And yet...for some strange, ineffable reason...the seller decides not to "trade them in for new tools" himself, and sell the new tools on fleabay...

Why restore the 65 Galaxie when you could just return it to Ford for a free replacement?

I think this is also what happens when people try to replace abused/neglected tools with the SO guy....

Sears or not but bringing rusty tools and expecting replacements is kinda pointless. The guy behind the counter isn't THAT stupid.. You should have at least cleaned them up... if there was nothing wrong with the tools besides rust why bother?

I once had some broken ratchets laying around my car that I wanted to replace at HD. I got them replaced then went to another HD months later and said I lost the bill. They gave me an in store credit for 100$ and I bought some random items.

Isn't the Sears warranty a satisfaction guarantee? If one is not satisfied with a tool they will (should) take it back.

Unless they have changed the warranty, it reads, "If any Craftsman hand tool ever fails to give complete satisfaction, simply return it to any Sears store and it will be replaced free of change".

Not sure how that means the OP is ""scamming" anyone.

I am usually all for the customer and not the company, but this time I am 100% agreement here as well. Sorry, but essentially this is trying to get something for nothing and if I can see where Sears is coming from in this rare case.

However these cashiers the public deal, nor the stock people or even managers don't really care if the customers shop elsewhere. You can tell them this and they'll say they are sorry or so, but a great deal of them just don't care because this isn't coming out of their paychecks and people will shop there anyway, even if one day Sears entirely stops making products in USA. I won't if that happens, but your average joe I noticed doesn't seem to care where tools are made these days.

That doesn't make any sense to me, but that isn't the issue here.

Being that Sears is a business, in order to continue to existing, they have to make money. If they don't they will ultimately go the way of several other notables business as well. I highly and I mean highly doubt Sears cares if they lose several customers as they have developed a fairly expansive clientele.
