This old Matco box is on Craig's list right now and the guy wants $600 FIRM for it. Assuming all the drawers and castors work fine, is that a good deal? Any idea how old it is?

That is a 33" wide box and I'm pretty sure all friction slides. It is a good size box and well built, but $600 is high in my book. Maybe $500, my thinking is $200 for the bottom, $200 top and $100 for middle.

How do you think Matco fiction slides would hold for something this old? I know nothing about Matco boxes.

I have restored a couple of vintage snap ons and agree that this could look nice. I'll have to goggle and see if I can find the matco paint codes.

Just restored a Matco of that vintage and the friction slides badly needed cleaning but work fine.

That is a MB910 top, MB903 middle (not sure on number) and a MB920 bottom. Supposedly they are the best built matco boxes of their time back in the day. :dunno:

I have that bottom box with a 26" wide matco box sitting on top. It is very rugged, I like the thin drawers. They are all friction slide drawers, the bottom most drawer on the bottom box had dual friction slides. If it is in good condition, I guess $600 wouldn't be bad, but from the blury pics, to me it looks a bit rough. They are nice boxes but unless you really like that style, I wouldn't go crazy paying for a worn out set. Yes, they are 33" wide, x 18" deep x ~68+" tall.

EDIT, here are a few pics I saved thanks to members on here. Inspiration we will call it. I love the blue color, but the red looks sharp as well. Hopefully those members won't mind, if so let me know and I will take the pics down.

Those boxes were nice, but that one's rough. Add to that the fact the genius wrote on the drawer faces with a Sharpie. I wouldn't call that a $600 box.

Looks pretty rusty at the bottom edge.

If you really want it, start bidding at $300 and end in high 4's or 5 tops.

After looking at it up close, I agree with CNG, unless you just really like that setup I'd keep looking. It looks pretty rought around the edges. I could see $200 for the bottom, ~$150 for the top and maybe $75-125 for the mid --> but $200 each seems a bit high.

Actually I see quite a few much better deals locally IMHO. I also love when a seller puts "Great deal", like who are you trying to convince me or yourself?

I sent you a PM.

I don't think I've ever bought a thing off CL in which the seller stated 'great deal'

That's b/c 99 times out of 100 when that's on there it's anything but.

Been listed 5 months, no price drop becasue it is "such a great deal" or my personal favorite "will never find a better deal than this"

that style box ws made from the 70's through the late 80's - early 90's

fomer co-worker had 2 sets of them, rugged & sturdy boxes.

but as mentioned, from the pic, they look a little rough for $600.

all depends on your local market

I see Mac and Matco offered this style box. Anyone know who is the manufacturer? Waterloo? I absolutely love the looks of them!!

Mac and Matco were one company until they spilt in the late 70's. Their boxes were pretty identical threw most of the 80's.

I have the exact set purchased off craigslist for $350.
Mine are in better but the slides were full of dried grease.
Cleaned the slides put it to work.
Really nice boxes.

$600 is high IMO. I overpaid for my 9 drawer lower Matco which is identical to yours. He was asking $300 and I got it for $225 after about 10 minutes of back and forth. Even then I had major buyer's remorse on the way home with it.

Still love the box and I would love to find the middle and upper boxes. I just missed the upper one a few months back on CL for $50:mad:.

I'd say $450 tops and that's if all the drawers open and close as they should.

Can you post a pic of your 9 drawer lower box? Is it ball bearing or friction? IIRC the 9 drawer is the step up from the standard 8 drawer MB920 posted above :dunno:

Here ya go. It's friction slides. The lower drawer is the bee's knees for storing all my air files/air hammers as well as my die grinders and sanding blocks.

My first box bought new in 1974 was a very similar MAC version. I still have it and use it for all my extra stuff, specialty tools, misc. ****, etc. One of these days I need to remove the petrified White Lithium grease from the slides and get the drawers working smooth again. Does anyone know if replacement slides can be had for these ? Mine were purchased new as a set and still all take the same key. To answer the original question it seems that most guys think $600 is too much but I know I wouldn't even consider selling mine that cheap.

O, ok, nevermind. Thanks for the pics. I thought you were talking about a box that is 33" wide and has 9 long full length drawers.
