And why do you think I've had a Wanted ad posted for a Craftsman 5197/5198 for about six months??? (2,282 views, and four responses...) No luck yet...

They are out there, I will find both of them...

And I thought BigCaddy was my pal...By the way, that 5195 Craftsman tips the scales at 51 pounds!!!...For a 3 1/2" vise!!!!

Actually only 42-46, (at least for the earlier 40's ones, they may have beefed them up in 54/57... (51-50 lbs??) but yeah, I have one of the (Earlier or lighter) 5195's...

But yeah, if I did find a 5197/8, it WOULD replace my long standing Parker 974 on the corner of my bench...

Still looking for a 2 x 3 square slider? I was scrounging around and found this Yost 204-1/2 with a 2 x 3-1/4 slider. I'd be happy to saw off more then you need to fit and weld into place, if yours happens to be broke on the opposite side. There is at least 6" of un damaged square slide. PM me if still looking.

I picked this up a couple months ago for $60 and I know he shot it with a can of black rustoleum because it was rusting on a bench under a tree for who knows how long. I need a few parts in case any of you have some extra like pipe jaws, dust cover and maybe a thru pin from looking at it so far. any help appreciated. Paypal works for me if you do and shipped to 98166. also I posted a thread because I have many grinders and would love to see what I find under all that black paint and rust. slide says 1976 which might make it a US made in 1971? any parts I should stay away from like the slide or ??? i'm still trying to set up an E tank so i'll have one when I find the Reed 208 or 209 or a big Prentiss if it needs a bath. got one to sell????

A quick clean-up of my Wilton eBay purchase (in one picture is my old red Wilton). In my bike shop I have a 5" (I think) Columbian that is from the 70's. It's a beast that gets a workout just about every day, will try and grab a picture of it.

Mine is not as pretty, never painted, and my workbench is much more scarred up!

This is a patternmaker's vise. It is wonderful to use for woodwork and small delicate mechanical work. It IS NOT for heavy rough work. I have Wilton's and Blacksmith post vises for that,

it needs to be cleaned up, but here's my big Wilton. no name on it so is it Chinese made or just a US made one for Snap On?

I just picked up a very good condition Emmert Clone for $20 but it's missing all the parts for the tilt bar and the 4 dogs. I found a source for the imported vises and parts. I can see getting the parts for the tilt function but the dogs are $14.00 each, can they be made?

Here are my two:

The Craftsman is a 5-1/2", stamped Made in Japan on the base. The P/N is 391.5187. I get this one from my father, but I believe his friend used it until he moved to Arizona a while back.
The one on the left has a plate:
I have not been able to find any more information about the manufacturer or their history. Anyone have any ideas? It has jaw inserts for holding angle iron and possible breaking small sheetmetal.
I have this one mounted, temporarily on the bench and probably will wait on the CM vise until we move to our new house (planning to sell next spring and move into a larger house so the family can grow.

I just ordered a replacement vise for a 391.5187 Craftsman here at work. I decided to search here if it has any value but this is the only post on GJ with this number. Anyone have any thoughts on value. I am sure it is repairable.

It is still used here It will tighten but it wont tighten when you turn the handle unless you slide it into what you are clamping first.

Is there someone here who restores something like this? Or willing to trade for something?

I picked up this Holland 27 H from the Colorado pile this last Summer and wanted to see if anyone has seen one like this before. I could not find anything in Google and thought one of you guy's might have seen one before. It is in very good shape and will not take much to get it in tip top shape. Only missing the swivel handles. 7" jaws and very heavy at 210lbs. Kind of dwarfs the 600 Wilton. Looking at other Hollands I think they were mostly red, could I be right? The spindle nut has Bronze thread, is this the norm on big vises? If so a great idea. In my mold making days 5% aluminum mixed in with bronze made for very tough stuff. We called it wearite and we used it under heavy slides that seen heat and would not show any wear after many uses. I have to finish this one day can be a good Winter project.

KMScott, That is a beauty. That 7 inch Holland is a first for me. 7s in any brand are kind of rare and collectable. Looks like that one has had a pretty easy life.

Glad you mentioned the bronze compound. About 20 years ago I took 2---2 inch x 5 inch brass roller barring's out of a bulldozer transmission, and was going to make me some brass mallets out of them. I was going to cut one in half and make two short ones but the band saw just rode on it like it was glass. Like to have never drilled a hole in one of them for a handle using pilot hole and stepping up 1/8 inch at a time. I made one and quit. I always wondered how they tempered brass to be harder than steel. But they were not ferrous, magnet would not stick. They had the spiral grease grooves in them and where they were in the transmission, they were under tremendous pressure. Regular brass would have squished like clay.

I posted some pictures just a few days ago of a Hollands that i picked up recently. After a close inspection of my vise, i'm pretty sure the original paint color was a brick red so yours could have original paint too

Looking at KM's pics I'm not sure I agree his is originally red BC; the red is sitting on on top of the stereotypical black paint, and it was clearly painted with the dynamic jaw closed, and the exposed part of the slide painted, and the iun-exposed part unpainted. not something I've seen from a factory, but is common with rattle can over-sprays...

The bolt on the bottom that holds the swivel base on also holds the main nut from moving,it might have come loose. There is a ring on the screw that holds it in place when untighting the jaws, it could be loose. The threads don't normally wear out to point of not tighting but it possible.
It is not worth a whole lot as most people are looking for old USA made.

I saw it on Craigslist, but don't know the rules/protocol about posting for sale links in the forum so I played it safe. "Almost Heaven" is nowhere near the PNW. Sing along with John Denver and you'll realize where I'm at (West Virginia)

I rescued this Rock Island from a barn that had fallen down and it was sitting in a carport looking pretty sad. A very talented member of GJ did his magic on it a couple months ago and I think his arms are still sore. it is a Rock Island 577 and I think 1935 date and around 170 pounds. I bought from 75 year old son of the original owner and I think new cost was $9.77. it opens and closes maybe better than any vise I've owned and I have a few.

Nice, i used to use my RI 977 every day. I mounted it to outside bench a month ago. Now in cold weather its a ridgid 8" on mobile base inside. Good luck with it.

I got by with a liitle cabinet & little compressor for a long time. Very messy and time consuming. I keep a look out on Craigslist and got the old cabinet with a media recyle/seperator. The compressor had hardly been used by a company restoring & powercoating office furniture. It not messy and works great. I have about $500-600 in the pair. It beats paint stripper or a derusting tank in my opinion.

sorry for the poor picture of my Rock Island but I need to clean off and move that 400 pound old metal Boeing surplus bench before I mount it or another 200 pounds on top of that bench and it might not go anywhere.

when you leave your Rock Island outside are you covering it up in the winter or does it just work when you want to go out in the cold or next spring to use it?
