I saw a KRA400 for the first time last week and fell in love. It's a nice little box and that roll-down door is perfect for my needs. Sadly it was not for sale. I intend to start looking for one of my own. Assuming one is in good shape (no dents, few scratches, used but cared for), what would I expect to pay?

Thanks

I paid $250 for my Kra 300 (same box) made in 1963. That is a pretty middle of the road for a 300. I have only seen one 400 for sale and they were asking $400 for it. If in the market for one, I think I'd pay that.

Is the KRA-400 the updated ball bearing version of the KRA-300 and KR300 roll a bench? Those are cool looking boxes. IDK, if it is all ball bearings, and in good working condition, AKA needs nothing, but a minor cleaning, ~$300 ish tops for me. They are all over the map, a few threads back someone picked up and older KRA-300 for <$100. When you stop looking that is probably when you will find one. :lol_hitti Or at least that is how my luck seems to run.

Thanks! I had a suspicion that $400.00 was about the top end for one in great shape. It's a great box, but I'm not ready to fork over just any amount for one.

400 were not ball bearing. I honestly don't know difference between the 300 and 400.

So what is your budget range? Remember, the better the condition, the more it will bring.

One thing you have going in your favor is that while they are desirable for tool nuts like us, average mechanic wants a bigger box and Harry Homeowner won't pay what they are worth so the market of buyers is small to some extent.

I'm 99.99999% sure the difference between the KRA400 and KRA300 or older "roll a bench" is the addition of ball bearing slides and larger casters. Every piece of evidence I have on the KRA400 states they are ball bearing. Even the snap on website for parts shows they are all ball bearing. If you have evidence otherwise I'd be interested in seeing it. Otherwise I'm pretty sure that was the main "upgrade". Kinda like how the KR5xx was replaced with a KR6xx and the change was to ball bearing slides.

I very well could be wrong, but if anything, I think the kra 400 only had ball bearing slides on the bottom drawer. This was very common arrangement for SO at the time. At the time when the 400 was discontinued in '95, there was still a pretty good number of friction slide boxes offed by SO. I would expect there to be other differences between a 3 and 4 I don't know about. Frist time I saw a 400 I remember it being a box and when I got my 300, I was like boy this is tiny.

Well I'll be damned. I never looked at the second, just the first I thought the it showed only one set of bb slides. Micky's is the newest kra 400 I have ever seen, it even has the newer style handle. I read further down the link and per one poster, the box was made up to 2000 or so. I thought the last boxes were made '95/96ish. I never saw one in a newer catalog after that. I'm going off memory as I have seen my well read first 100 page 95 catalog in 10 years and can't for certain what model number is listed in that one. I very well may have never seen a kra 400. I saw one listed on CL and he dated to 1987 so I was using the dirty word "assume" that the 300 was upgraded to the 400 about '85ish. Learn something new everyday.

Thinking about it a little more, I bet a newer Kra 400 like Micky's are pretty few and far between. The box design was very long in the tooth, dating back to the earily 40's and I bet not many were sold in 90's.
