Please see reference to SEP 1.1 & Open ADR. There are several POCO's using this to automate and control the load in a persons home.
Not without other equipment installed, such as relays and contactors, AND not without your consent.

Well, of course isn't that what I said? :dunno: The question I was trying to address is that people often like to dismiss others with out actually understanding the big picture.

The United States in some parts of the nation has some of the oldest and most taxed electrical grid.

People are using more energy and the grid can not keep up. How is the POCO going to control this problem? They will start charging people where it hurts them the most, the pocket book.

How can they start charging a person when they don't know when the power is being used?

This is where the smart meter comes in.

Once the meter is in, yes it can reduce labor and costs to read the meter. If anyone believes that is the primary driver for these meters. Then, there is no hope for any of those who believe its so.

The ultimate goal is to control a zone, area, district to load balance the grid. The problem I have with some of these smart meters is that *some* use over powering zigbee RF radio or powerline communications.

All of which would affect me directly as I use both in my network. So in a nut shell the smart meter is about control and will be coming to a neighbourhood near you! :lol_hitti

Keep in mind there are various types of these meters and its deployment is solely dependant upon the POCO. In our region you can not ask for a Smart Meter, even if you applied for one.

Why they install them in random homes in our area I am unsure, perhaps testing.

Lots of interesting comments. I am not paranoid but will tell you that my neighbour has one that faces the headboard in my bedroom. For the last month I awake at exactly 3 am. I read that in Arizona - be it Phoenix or elsewhere - people have been woken up at 4am. I switched bedrooms with my wife who sleeps like a log and did not say a thing about the time. She awoke at 3 am each night she was there while I slept right through.
As to the meters being installed in BC I understand they are made in China and not yet CSA approved. I cannot confirm that. We have had several house fires starting at the meter but Hydro says the house wiring was defective and claim no responsibility. And now we will be having "time of day" billing which added to our 26% hydro increase over 5 years will only add more money to the utility. And yes they can determine what appliances are being used. LG "Smart TVs" also monitor which programs you watch and send feedback to advertisers. Just like they can tell when there is a power outage. But will repair crews get here any faster? As to reading a meter why bother sending anyone? Read it yourself. A friend has his meter in his garage and Hydro left a post paid card for him to fill in when they could not get access. Incidentally the gas meter reader gets 40 cents per meter.
My sons live in Ontario and both have seen a major spike in their hydro bills since installation of these meters. The Smart Meter opponents in BC number about 66,000. With BC Hydro charging a $35 per month opt-out fee it will generate about $2.1 million per month for doing nothing. The province of Quebec had a $17 per month opt-out fee but now with pressure from the government (isn't that a change?) are trying to get it down to a token $1 per year. Finally there are a few countries in Europe which have banned them along with many cities in Canada. BTW I do not have a cell phone nor a wireless router. And if I could go off-grid I would. Maybe I am a Luddite, but a proud one!

resistance is futile! accept the nighttime reprogramming, its good for you, my meter say's "made in the USA" (thats awesome and all but glad to see the US getting China meters, restores my faith lo?)

A land developer, but stayed in a Holiday Inn Express and is now apparently a EE.

And the links from that video lead to some serious bat **** internet crazy info.

Must be no tin hats in Germany as that country has banned smart meters..

I would not be using Germany as any sort of leading indicator. They are closing out their Nuc plants too.

Maybe this isn't the same thing - but I have a load control device on my HVAC unit that the POCO put in place. They give me an annual discount for allowing them to install it and use it. It allows them to shut off my heat pump when they need to. I think they typically activate it for no more than 10 or 20 minutes at any given time - we've never noticed it. They don't shut power off to our entire house ever.

Ok, the funny thing is, I don't really care either way. Smart people will come out with new things like the Nest thermostat, etc. etc. Anyways, smart meters are coming to my town and I heard one woman telling my mother that she is paying to opt out due to "dirty electricity"... Wtf?!

I did a little bit of research but mostly complaints are about switching power supplies... anyone know anything more about this?

Switching power supplies.....the same thing that is in a CFL....your cell phone charger....your TV...your computer screen....your computer....your DVD player.....

If your worried about it....then I would suggest you don't go out into the sunlight. Don't watch TV.....don't look at the computer screen....

And God forbid, don't use a welder....

That woman is 'bat **** crazy'.....

"Biohazard".....so....there is a biological material in these meters?

EMF....I really doubt she knows what it really means....

Just so you know...."Oath Keepers"
Oath Keepers is an American nonprofit organization[1] that advocates that its members (current and former U.S. military and law enforcement) disobey any orders that they are given if they believe they violate the Constitution of the United States.

About par to Sovereign Citizenes

I can't believe I have made it through all the conspiracy theories listed in this post and haven't seen a single person mention that all of the data collected by the Po Co will be quarterly given to the NSA. Of course, they wont be able to look up any information unless they get a warrant from a secret court. Or if you can be connected 7 acquaintances away from a known terrorist. Or if you've ever played as a terrorist in any video games such as Counter Strike. Or if you ever buy any items that could be made into an explosive (like gasoline). Or if you live in a state that has a known terrorist in it.

Seriously, these things aren't a big deal. If you are really concerned, get a solar array. Solar has gone way down in price. Put your money where you're mouth is and just do it.

Oh, and for the record, if you're posting on an internet forum, you've already failed at living off the grid. They will find you. They will do whatever they want to you. There is nothing you can do to stop it.
