I have seen several posts on this topic but I haven't had luck with the search.

I applogise in advance for asking what I'm sure been asked.

I am a DIYer. My '99 Trooper often throws codes and I am tired of going to the parts store so I am considering a DIY type scan tool.

Are any of the HF ones any good and if so,which one? I know there are smart phone options but I hve a Blackberry.

I don't know enough about the tools to know what options are important.

I have the HF 99722 model and like it for what it is. On sale and with 20% coupon it was around $69. It obviously won't do the newer CAN protocols so won't work on my '06 silverado, or mercedes but has worked on most '96-'0? vehicles I've worked on. It has codes built in, a USB cable, and can do real time freeze frame data.

don't know, not sure when things changed to CAN for all the mfgs. I know my '06 silverado is OBDII but always have to use the candi module on the techII. Plugging in an OBDII doesn't recognize the ECM. But for your '99 it should work.

You may want to check HF's current offerings, they may have a newer version out. HF doesn't make them they are made by Autel. you can go to their website and see the same models and get the update files from them. HF just rebadges them.

For an OBD-II code reader, the Innova 3100 is excellent. It has a very tough and durable body.

Hi, as a cheaper option, and something I know nothing about or no anyone who has done this, but if you have a laptop, you can get a USB to management cable for most cars / vehicles, and perhaps somehow download the error code data base from perhaps a torrent site, just a suggestion,

Amazon has been having some of these on special during their daily deals the last couple weeks.
