Weighing options on a SO box

Years ago when I was single and had plenty of spare time and change, I found a smoking deal on an almost brand new 1022 box and full height side cab for 40 percent of new. The box was and still is immaculate. I used the tools in it a bit but life was changing for me and now I see the box and the shop it's in every few weeks and dream a little bit about how easy life used to be. The box has now been payed for for several years and I have steadily pirated tools out of it for my box at work.
So the box is payed for, I use it very little, but I don't ever see myself buying a nice box like it again, much less for the price and condition. If I were smart I'd sell the box in a heartbeat and buy a small chest to sit in its place for the tools that are left in it. I can't get myself to do that. Where does the support group meet for problems like this?

Honestly You will still be a taking somewhat of a loss if you sell it because I think you would end up selling it between 2500-3000, based on how the doubles are selling around me. If I were you I would try and find some one with a KRL single stack and do a trade plus cash deal with them if you are happy with SO build quality. Too bad the side locker will be too deep for the single bay though.

Another option is a KR7100 but they are not as common.

I agree with this, Not to mention the market on Used High End boxes is Rough for Sellers. It might come back to haunt you down the road if you ever need the storage and more than likely you wont be able to find a KRL1022 for anywhere near what you sold it for.

I'm going to take a stab, you a road tech? If that is the case, I'd keep the box because stuff could change and you maybe back in a shop at some point and then what, do you have another box, or is a quicky buy to fill a need. If you don't wrench and don't see yourself ever wrenching, then maybe it isn't the worse idea to get rid of it. That said, it is paid for, it isn't costing you anything to keep it.

yea, it's not costing you anything to keep it.

i kick my self every time i think about the couple (work) boxes i sold when i went out in the field in '04.

no way my tools would ever fit back into what i have at the shop now.
and my homeboxes are pretty much full as well...

think about (possible) replacement cost vs the selling price

After rereading your post, do you work somewhere that boxes are provided? I was for a while looking to get into a city garage where boxes were provided and I thought the same thing. I have a second SO box at home that serves my home needs perfect so the 1022 would have sat empty. Now had I took the job and say five years later left, I would be sitting with a 1022 worth of tools laying on my garage floor. I still stand buy its paid for, keep it.

I'm pretty lucky with my storage situation. The box is sitting in the shop I used for a small engine repair, motorcycle salvage, and side jobs when I still had time. I have a smaller box at work, a KRA2107, that I have been expanding as the used deals come up.

It's to the point where family and work have kept me away from my side jobs almost entirely for the last four years. Now my entire investment in welders, tools, really cool signs, etc. sits and waits for me and gathers dust.

My old shop sits on family land so it cost nothing extra to sit as cold storage. I was the one that resurrected it to begin with so they allow me to keep it like a museum of sorts. It was the absolute best thing in my life before I was married. I intend to put together some pics of the shop project someday.
Now i have these two boxes and a few smaller resto projects. I guess I'm still trying to justify keeping all my bad habits.

Keep it; if you overfill the work box you may need it... and as mentioned you will never get it back. In the mean time, if the empty drawers bother you, re-org and use the empties for something besides tools for the time being.

I appreciate the advice all. The box will stay. I guess if I don't use it, my boy can have it for a graduation present in twenty years. Unless he tries becoming a lawyer. Or a dancer.

Good......I say keep the box, the shop, and all your equipment on stand-by in case for some reason you lose your current job. You don't owe anything on the box - you got everything free and clear - storage is free - you're not desperate for money - keep the box!
