My y pipe is complete. see http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201476

Now where the pipe ends its looking right at the axle at full suspension droop.
I will need to go under the axle so I am thinking about making oval so
the exhaust looks clean and isn't hanging too far down.
Its tight everywhere now so why change that?

Anyone have ideas on doing your own oval and the tricky part. Transitions.
I made some ovals with my boy and it was a o.k. 1st effort. Just wondering how the more experianced crew here would attempt this?

No I am not interested in using my credit card. :D

Stole a couple pics from Justintiime's Firebird build.

I figure I could use the heat and hoist trick again to flatten (oval) the 3" pipe to my desired 1.75" height or band saw in half a 1.75" pipe.
Last attempt I used 2 unequal sized bars, I just wanted to see if it worked.
I'd equal it out next go around.

i cant find the pics, but i remember seeing a rally car rebuild where they had oval exhaust tubing under it, and they just split a tube and welded in flat stock top and bottom.

When I was looking for someone who could mandrel bend 3.5" exhaust tubing for my stacks, I stumbled onto Dr Gas (the inventor of spin tech mufflers and the x-pipe). He had a CNC mandrel bender and did a lot of 3.5" exhaust for NASCAR. What amazed me is he would mandrel bend the entire exhaust system then run it through the ovaling machine. I know this doesn't help but I thought it was cool.

What about making a form and wrapping sheet metal around it to make your own tube? I am not entirely sure how you would do the wrapping, but I think it would be the cleanest option as far as aesthetics and possibly ease of install.

The cool thing about that idea is slicing bends then adding to them. If I need to curve the oval I'll probably go that route. If not I'll get out the engine hoist again.

Just one of many...stock cars(NASCAR) have been using ovalized tube for years..should be able to get what you need....Sorry I did not see the credit card comment.....you can also use a wooden block inside the tube & squish it in a press....has worked in a pinch for me...

Like the wood mandrel idea.

That is cool and would love to see that.

Hmmm? some 1.75" tube or rod to length then wrap and weld? Interesting!
