First of let me say this site rocks..., although this is my first post, I have already learned a bunch of great information. I have a 30x50 pole barn 6x6 post and metal covering. I have seen many on here like it...

I am very excited to be able to finally get in to it. I am doing all the interior work myself to include wiring etc. I am NOT a building expert nor a master electrician but I do research and as much reading as possible prior to doing anything to ensure safety and a quality finished product.
I need to build a 14W x 30L finished room inside the shop. I have the cheap bubble insulation under the girts.

I need some suggetions of how I should frame and insulate the room. I am guessing 2x6 studs and not sure about insulation type. One end wall of shop will be a wall for the room. I am not sure how to frame and build ceiling either... I am not sure either about the material I should use for the wall that will be exposed to the remainder of the shop. I would love some pics maybe of the process if any of y'all have any...

Once again I am glad to be aboard here. I am here to stay now that I finally have a shop. No information is too basic for me.... I would appreciate any lessons learned...
I live in louisiana and a window ac will be used to cool the room in summer

There are some good books at HD or Lowes on basic building and wiring. They have lot os pictures and a worth buying.

I guessing you want 2x6 construction for additional insulation. Because you are building inside of a building you can rent a Ramset powder actuated nailer to attach the footer to the floor (assuming there is a concrete floor), The footer still need to be pressure treated. Make sure the stud walls are plumb and straight, especially when attaching to the girts. It might require a bit of shimming to do this.

The fast way to build, is build an entire wall laying down. If you have enough friends. or can rent wall jacks, apply the external sheathing before the wall is lifted.

Fitting and framing a window to the hole in the existing outside wall will be tricky. For a 400+ sq ft room in Louisiana you are going to need a heck of a big A/C unit ! I would put in extra bracing between the inside and outside wall and remember that window A/C unit need a small pitch down to the outside to drain the condensation.

With a 14' span you can probably get by with 2x8 for ceiling joists, unless you are planning on using the space above the room for storage. Then I would go with 2x10 minimum.

Thanks old wizard for taking time to respond...

I already have the .22 cal nailer that you need for the bottom of the wall (interior side). There is also a window framed 3x3 exactly centered at the 15 foot mark in exterior wall. My rafters start at the 9 foot mark and are not the attic type. There will be no walking or storage overhead so do I still need 2x8s...? Also from what I have read, a window ac unit to fit in that size window should be plenty to cool that room if properly insulated. Maybe someone will chime in that has done something similar....

This is going to be a work out area for the wife, it was my trade off for the remainder of the shop:eek:

If you look in my build thread below you can see how I did it. When you selected the 14' dimension did you consider going to 12' or 16' to align the end of the wall with a post? Attaching to the post will add considerable strength to the wall. Also if you look in my build see how I made a removable wall section for the moving of equipment and how one section of the wall is 2x10 studs with shelves for storage.

Tim, go to the lumber yard and inquire about someone that can jot down a simple plan for you. This person may catch a few good ideas like the one above about lining up with a pole. You can get a lumber list at the same time so you will waste little. And you will get the right size for the ceiling so you can use that space above.

Also there are "handouts" at most building depts and a lot of that stuff is on line. For instance, you could go to my city's website and download a "typical" building plan normally used to create a plan for a specific job. People just pick up the notations and place them on the new job plan. Typical layouts and attachments are shown. For instance you may be using ledgers. That detail is shown on the "typical" plan.

If all that those rafters/ceiling joists are only spanning 14' and only holding up the drywall on the inside and insulation on top, you are probably okay with 2x6.

I am not a structural engineer or even much of a carpenter. If it was me, for the extra $20-$40 it is going to cost, I would go with 2x8. You will need some kind of blocking mid-span to keep those joist spaced 16" O.C.

Thought. With 2x10 joists, you could probably go to 24" O.C. !

I used 2x6 for the walls with metal siding, I will probably take the metal off some day and put insulation behind it and put heat and air in the tool room, work bench area and office. The ceiling is 2x10 with a 2x12 band because it is a loft for storage. I like the look of the metal on the inside wall, the exterior is roll commercial building insulation 36" wide. I used the double bubble on the ceiling, if I ever build another one I would use the commercial insulation there also. Good luck with your project.

As a frame of refference, here's my 12X24 office and tool room, I built it under the lean on one side of my shop. All framing is 2X6 with osb for interior walls and plywood out side and on top. R 19 insulation keeps it nice and warm with a small electric heater.

My "room" is a lot smaller being only 16x8, but the same construction techniques apply, i went with 2x6's(PT on the floor) regular studs for the walls and OSB with R-19 insulation, it is 16"on center, as i plan to use the ceiling area for storage also. im not sure what im going to cover the OSB with, the view your looking at, but the interior is drywalled
Man your giving up a lot of your shop for your lady..

I built a whole city street in mine... I framed everything in 2x4. There was already a loft in the shop, so I used that as the ceiling/floor between the stories.

Thanks guys for all of the replies...and and thanks Mike Miller for taking the time to post pics./ Can anyone direct me to a thread or pics of how to Frame ceiling Joists and also ( and I know this sound dumb), but how is insulation ran in the walls?, I am assuming that you run all wiring first then put up the insulation batts...?
