Being a newbie here at GJ has ruined my life. I have had a couple shop with tons of cool tools for about 7 years now. My shop has always been just for me, never shared as I work overseas and don't have time for local shop bromances. Found this site by accident. I must quote GJ when I tell you all. YOU ****! Never gave a thought to a shop fridge as the house is right there. Now I need I highly detailed vintage Frigidaire. ****, a vintage stove will be next as I may as well cook whiilst I wile away the hours out there. I have a junky old transistor SW/FM/AM radio for sound, now I need a vintage vacuum tube Zenith Transoceanic radio. My giant stereo system (US made) will go out there. My wife wants a new bedroom set, perhaps there is room in the shop for my old one? :shocking: I have a new 1HP grinder in my shop, now I scan CL for old ones. You guys have ruined my life! My 8" SO vise is more than adequate, now I am looking for a older vise I can resurrect. I think I am become Dr. Frankenstien when I see a picture of a dead tool or refrigerator. Who is going to be the first to have a Grandfather clock in their shop? Admit it. Some of you are now pondering a GF clock! Is there a cure for this madness that has taken me?

Now if only I had a car-themed grand father clock! My only GF clock has been in my family for many generations and was made before an automobile existed :wtf:

You better learn how to write with proper paragraphs or you will probably piss someone off here.
J/K, welcome to the site

vintage vacuum tube Zenith Transoceanic radio

My grandfather (passed in 1980) had one of those on his workbench in the garage. I have no idea what happened to it.

Hey don't forget the vintage metal tanker desk, and all of your shelving is now totally inadequate. You will need to rip it all out and replace it with cabinets made fro 1/4" titanium plate with retinal scanner for security. :D

Welcome to the madhouse sorry I meant The Garage Journal. Flivver250, you forgot the most important thing. You must have pictures in your post taken with your new phone Android or other.

FWIW, I wish I could go back to my old barn, my old cars, and my old, ''crappy'' life.

More, and ''better'' aren't always what you think they are going to be.

I feel the same way as the OP, lol. I haven't been here long and it's taken hold on me hard already. I just bought a Wilton 1760 that I'm in the midst of restoring, I'm talking to a local guy about picking up his Delta 17-600 drill press and my dad has been enlisted to get the vintage heavy steel filing cabinet he saw by the dumpster at work for me to restore and convert into a hardware library.

Although, I'm not complaining one bit. I'm grateful for the appreciation of old iron that's been inspired in me again.

You could always take up knitting?

I don't knit, but i've always wanted to learn. Knitting, isn't as simple as you think:

Knit with stainless, aluminum, or steel needles? perhaps custom turned wooden needle? hard wood? environmentally conscious? how about Baboo? Oh, it's the 21st century, we definitely need some carbon fiber needles.

You don't just have one pair of needles, right? you're gonna need a pouch to hold all those expensive and exotic needles. So, perhaps leather pouch? Because, you certainly don't recommend Made in China plastic pouches.

so, now you have one pouch of needles, now you need pouches of circular knitting needles, double pointed needles and a set of single point knitting needles.

Perhaps, if you have a toolbox to store all those needles, you wouldn't be needing a bunch of leather pouches. So, off to hunt down the perfect toolbox and see how to convert them to store knitting needles.

now that we're set for the needles, we need some yarns. Get several of the most popular yarns, and we have to store those somewhere. Since leaving them in the paper sack is quite crude, don't you think? perhaps you scour "Knitting Journal" for storage ideas for all the neat yarns you just bought. There's million ways to store nuts and bolts, there are million ways to store yarns.

oh, and I haven't got around to storing all those patterns yet.......

And it has taken you 104 posting to find this out? I spend about every day out in my garage. I look around on this site, then look at my garage, and think....I now need to do this, I need to do that next week, and maybe next summer I am going to do this.

I had a recliner that I gave my BIL. I'm thinking about asking for it back so I can be a little more comfortable at times, and kick back to watch the tube. Even the wife will come down to the garage to hang out and watch TV with me at times. I need a larger garage as I have basically outgrew this, but I know that if I add on, I'll need to add on enough so I can at least have a lift, a pool table, a bathroom, a microwave, and whatever else. This is one of the greatest sites on the 'net, and also one of the worst as it really DOES make the grass greener on the other side

When I came here I didn't hate my garage, but it became apparent that it was severely unloved. I became ashamed of my garage. Then I realized that it was not the garages fault! For years..Nay..DECADES! it had taken all the **** and abuse that 3 generations could throw at it without a whimper.

This site encouraged me to make my shop better. I'm still not there but I am making progress.

But I have added a recycled made in U.S.A. material, industrial themed grandfather clock to my list. O.K. kinda on list B somewhere between filling up all the spots on my socket racks and my quest for the Blackhawk freewheeling ratchet, but it is still there1

There is a lot if information here. I depend on lot of good device I get here. Just one word of advice. Some people here would make you believe that unless you are spending all your money on snapon tools, you are not doing it right. Don't listen to them. Bunch of good people and a lot of good advice here. Just don't hate your shop because it does not live up to someone else's standards.

If your stuff works for you, it is good.

Actually, I had a shop fixation long before I came here. Just having fun with words. The ideas I get here are excellent. Now I know I do need a tanker desk and an elderly refrigerator. I have threatened to install a urinal. While a urinal is not needed, I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere and I am surrounded by acres of urine targets, I don't know anyone who has their own urinal. A personal urinal is a badge of honor few men can claim.

My Grand Father clock is about 80 years old. It was used to "clock" when you showed up and left work. I got it when we changed to a more stable union job site. Wayne.
