Someone (who doesn't have to pay for shipping) is about to get a great deal on an old Craftsman roller (not mine) as long as the snipers don't drive the price up at the last minute. If I didn't live on the other coast I'd be all over this one. Two hours 'till the auction ends and it's only at $13.

I've got that same box. Bit confused as to why the drawers are red inside? How'd that happen?

It ended up going for $52.66 with 9 bids on 8 bidders. I wonder if any of them were members.

I wish I could find boxes like that around here. Oh well, maybe someday.

This is my $110 recent 12-drawers Beach purchase:

Quite beaten-up, but for the price paid I can't complain.

Small Snap-On, not sure about its age:

Val_C, that beach is really nice, good drawer layout. Is the snap on box stamped year and model, if so what is the model #?

I've got that same box, and am in the process of turning it into a nice welding cart.
I'm almost done, just need to cut the steel for the top, finish sanding the drawers, finish the hose and cord holder, then paint it.

Purchased this box this morning for $15 from CraigsList. It will be my first toolbox restore! Thanks everyone for the good advice.

At first I thought I would paint it red, but the Craftsman symbol in the middle has a red circle so I'm afraid that will "clash". Anyone have a better recommendation on paint?
Check out the Hammertone rattlecans at Lowes/Home Cheapo. I've used a blue/green (see post 1791), blue, green, bronze & black with great results.

Black & bronze here:

I know the feeling, I would love to have one of those so I can refinish and put my refinished top box on it.

KR 562E I picked up the week before Thanksgiving. Been busy cleaning the box and the slides. Almost done, though. :D

This taco box has been repainted at some point with a darker shade of paint. Not a bad job, but I'm planning on giving it a fresh paint job next year. Drawers slide decent. All locks keyed alike and came with three keys.

1967 "grey and red" boxes that I did a year ago. It used to belong to my dad. Wish I could find the keys to the locks. I remember seeing them 15 years ago, but no telling where they went!

What years was the lower panel gray or was it originally red? I am restoring one and would like to know. The catalog images are in black and white and I cannot tell.

OK cork Liner is in, Rubber strips on the two "bottoms" put on w/Contact Cement, and a boot lace handle made up, then loaded up. The long stuff and about 3-4 of the sockets came out of my socket drawer in my main box, so it's considerably lighter, if nothing else. The rest of the sockets needed a home.

Weighs just under 50 Lbs...

I can't tell you what years the colors were, but I have the exact same setup and the panel for the bottom space on the roller is gray, but the drawers are red. The roller is either '72 or '74, and the top box is the other year.

I need those Craftsman badges for the upper and lower boxes.

Can anyone place this small cantilever toolbox? It came with a Craftsman c-series set and looks to be originally maroon. No stampings anywhere on it and I can't make out the remnants of a logo anywhere. Any chance someone knows of a place online that might have a Craftsman catalog from that era to see if there's anything similar?

Not in any of the Craftsman catalog I have, but I have nothing with boxes prior to 42.

Are there any raised frames for a logo sticker, and is there any writing on the latches?

Picked this up from ebay today for the high price of £37, (approx €60).

Can anyone tell me the Snap-On code for the box.

It's a little beaten up with a few small dents etc, but it's solid, all there (incl 1 original key) and the drawers work nicely.

model # and date code should be stamped on the back.

soemtimes the stampings are very light, and hard to see

it's best to use a bright flashlight :eyecrazy:

No raised/recessed areas for a logo. The clasps on the front did have something on them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Lock_Company

Not sure if it it helps yet :)

Seems like they may have made small boxes? http://www.etsy.com/listing/153458291/small-industrial-metal-box-eagle-lock?ref=market

Thanks,

You were right about the stampings being a bit weak.

It actually says

RA- 3B

But should be KRA-53B

From 1981, so a bit newer than I expected.

Nice find!

I am looking for something similar for three years now, but over here in Holland, you don't see them for sale a lot.

I even tried the UK, but no one wants to send them to me.

Are you going to refurbish it, or only clean it?

Just clean it up initially to see how good or bad it actually is.

But will probably end up giving it a full refurb.

Congrats, that looks like a nice box, indeed a KRA53, does it still have all the dividers in the drawers? What does the top lid sticker say?

Random, but does anyone have a 1950's 10drawer craftsman box they could take a few detailed photos of the sliding tray feature? I don't fully understand how it works. Does the tray slide forward and lift out of the drawer? I'm working on building a few drawer trays for my tool box and somehow ran across this while searching for ideas. Thanks

The short ends of the tray are taller than the depth, then are rolled over to form a channel that rests on top of the sides of the drawer. Depending on how tall you make the sides, you can drop the tray down into the drawer for more clearance up top.

By riding on top the the sides of the drawer, the tray can slide front to back to gain access underneath. Or be lifted out.

Here's one that a member made for his HF 5-drawer cart.

Here are a couple of pics ZK;

The lip on the sliding tray is similar to the above, the back half of the drawer has a lip it slides under so unless it's all the way forwards, it cannot be lifted out. I'm not at all sure why they felt the need to have it captive in the back position...

The lip the tray slides on are simple upside down "L" rails spot welded in.

You can make sliders front to back like this, or you can either make a hook/support for the back edge and have the front edge rest on a piece of wood cut and mounted to the back side of the front of a drawer, or a piece or wood front and rear and just make a simple tray with no support/hook. then you can slide the tray side to side, which is what I want to to eventually with a deep drawer for socket storage, and have all the ratchets and extensions in the sliding tray.

Thanks for the replies and ideas guys , Outlaw awesome pics, saved for future reference  After I read the catalog description, I couldn't get a 100% mental picture of how it worked, those pics solved that. Too bad cman doesn't make any nifty boxes like that today. IDK maybe they made it captive so when the box is turned upside down you don't have to worry about the tray spilling. :lol_hitti

All the dividers are still there.

The sticker on the top is for the Steigenberger Hotel.

I think they used to sponsor someone in motorsport a few years ago. Not sure if it is relevant or not.

I have the same set up as well. Red bottom door, dated 8/72.
If that helps...
