The project moved to the paint booth and finally the quality control station.

I knew I was behind the old power curve, when it comes to some of you more advanced vise aficionados...:drool::drool:

But a paint booth, and a quality control station----:shocking::shocking::shocking:

I am doomed to failure......doomed I tell you!!!:sad::sad::sad::sad:

Oh well, one must do what one must...:bowdown::bowdown:

B100, that Geo. Diener looks a LOT like a vise recently posted in the " the Craftsman vises ID thread." late 40's to late 50's Think their is a link there?

Could be. Who knows?:dunno: I think the Diener is much older though. It has the old style swivel base with a single bolt. Yes, it was a gift.

So here is the before and after shots. The new Jaws will be ready this Friday and I will be able to give this to my buddy for Christmas

I left the original hammer scarred main handle in original condition, afterall this is a user tool not just bench candy

A Reed 2C... best Christmas present ever! That thing is about as beefy as you can get for a 4" combination vise! Perfect size for any workbench.

Just call me "Scrooge" I fixed up a couple of orphans for adoption by my two brothers for Xmas. I don't think they will mind if they are not super heavy duty. They are better than what they have now. ( Nothing )
Craftsman is a Columbian made and the Eron is Japan

Okay Outlaw, Ah'm a-callin you out!
You had your little H&B round-slide clamp-ons before me, and paid a lot less, but I'll bet mine is prettier! I just finished it, and I think it looks great. The paint is Rusoleum Regal Red which does not look as orangy as it does in some of these pictures. It's a, shall we say, dignified red.
I still haven't been able to find any info on this H&B. The only ones I turned up online are too recent to be the manufacturer of this vise.
Such tiny things, I'm thinking of trying to get another just like it and give 'em to my wife for earrings.

Really, I am sorry it looks Asian to me. Have you ever tried an old American vise like Reed, Rock Island, Parker or Wilton to name a few. I can not imagine using my torch and building swivel clamps on that vise.

Understandable reaction,
But to be completely truthful, this vise is comparable to the Wilton's in quality, and 1/4 of the price.

Bob, nice job on the restoration. Not seeing the differences you mentioned earlier between our 2 vises.

You're right. I looked at your pix again, and what I was seeing in photo 5 that looked like another gusset is actually a drip of orange paint. I guess I didn't maximize the pictures before, because when I did just now it was obvious. Cool that you've found a handheld too.
Thanks for the compliment. It's a keeper.. if I ever did sell it, it would only be after finding another to restore, and even then it would take a ridiculous price!
Yours probably has been repainted - mine was originally black, and I kind of doubt there would have been different colors from the same manufacturer. Since I was fixing it up for myself I painted it the color I wanted.

What Wilton are you comparing it too? The Wilton reversible 4500 is pretty much identical and fairly close in price. $167 at Zoro tools for example. Plus it is available right now and every place I checked yours was not in stock and on back order.

I have an opportunity to buy a pair of vises: a Wilton C3 and a Columbian D4. I am not really interested in the C3, but might take it if I could rehab it and resell it. What is a reasonable offer for the pair? The C3 does not have jaws in the pic, but the seller says they are in good condition.

I just paid $300 for a very good condition C3. Maybe not a deal but I was told worth the money. If that helps.

There is a retainer collar or clip the holder the main screw in the "head" portion of the dynamic jaw. wheel the whole jaw out and flip it over. inspect the screw for a groove, (on discover the collar and its missing/loose setscrews) and adjust; then reassemble...

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look at it one day next week! I would just feel better knowing it at least was functioning correctly. I can't undo all the damage it has but it deserves to at least work right!

Your's looks good Bob, but other than wheeling the bare metal parts, I decided to leave mine original in this case. 80% or more of the original black paint, and battle scars and all...

Nice...my "little" 4 inch columbian does me fine...but what I always wanted was a Bugatti vise, in the 80s some beautiful replicas were made by an Argentinian restorer, might have been pre- web though, and I cant seem to track down a picture.
The most beautiful vise ever made, in my opinion.

Asking and getting are two different things, and 'tis NOT the season to get top $$ on Eprey unless its a gift someone simply has to have.

Well the jaws were finished this morning.

1386972837786.jpg

Robert, nice set of jaws, I wonder if they used a shaper for the serrations. I hope the shop hardened them for you, if not they would be a good candidate for case hardening. I have used Kasenit with success. Case hardening is a good treatment for jaws, and can be used on many types of steel that is not Tool Steel. Very nice Reed 2C you have.

Help I need some new screws for my vise. Two were bent and 2 were good. Vise is probably 1950s vintage. Gonna paint it this weekend. Color is undecided.

Wow I have never seen a Dunlap machinists vise before. Looks just like a 1938-1947 Craftsman vise. No help on the screws though sorry.

Found this pic on the net from the Hannover Messe (trade show) 2013. The website doesn't give any info on who made it. Nice looking design, though.
