For fun one time, I put a long coiled cord with a cig lighter adaptor on a small 7.2 Makita. It was the best little drill for working on and in cars I have ever had. The 7.2 had tons of power running at 12volts and its small form factor (not to mention light weight) made it easy to navigate under dashes and in engine bays.
Yes, a 7.2V drill can really get going if you connect it to a good stiff 12V supply. I tested this one first up by jumping some wires to a good 12V Li-Ion pack from one of my other drills. Yeah it was
really lively.
With this pack it's not quite so lively because as I say they're slightly tired old batteries that were only going to be chucked out otherwise. It does run ok though, similar to what this drill originally ran like, and the batteries seem to be holding their charge ok too. I was also able to get it to stand upright on the pack, something that the original drill never did. I tapered the top of the pack (to bring the center of gravity back), specifically to allow it to stand upright.
I'll probably keep this thing sitting around on my bench for light duty stuff now, it definitely works ok.
