I have an opportunity to buy a pair of vises: a Wilton C3 and a Columbian D4. I am not really interested in the C3, but might take it if I could rehab it and resell it. What is a reasonable offer for the pair? The C3 does not have jaws in the pic, but the seller says they are in good condition.

WiltonC3.jpg

No question, that C3 is definitely worth $3 bills. They only made that "600S" jaw design a few years and it is in my Wilton World the nicest. Little use also. Might have both the original finger savers on it still. Pursue the OE jaws from him if there is any way to find them.

Stanley Handyman 2 1/2" clamp-on vise. I just got one I'm restoring for no better reason than I think it's cute. The stick-on label is missing, and I'd like to repro it. I have not yet been able to find a good enough picture of one to use - does anyone here have one they could post a good picture of? Here's the best I could find- good for judging size and placement, but that's about all. I need a good close-up.
Thanks!

>>>GOT IT A little more intensive internet crawling came up with one that was good enough. I re-drafted in it CorelDraw and converted it to PDF below.

One more question. Does anyone know how to get the leadscrew out? It almost looks like the retainer clip and slide bars were all pressed in as a unit. Not gonna try to pull them! But, I'd like to get the clip and screw out to do a thorough clean&paint.

Bob, that retainer clip is slid into place then the slide rods are pressed it. I do not recommend taking them out its very difficult and even more difficult to get them back in and not bend them.... :ninja:

I managed it and finally got them straightened out but...

OK, a really cool vise accessory! This thing adjusts to odd shapes, the set screw on the end allows the mini jaws to adjust in and out...

markings say:

Universal Equalizer Co.

Cin,O,USA

Makers Trade Mark (An Arm/Fist holding a bar)

And it works great, my son's response was "So they had a solution for irregular objects in a vise for nearly a century???"

No springs at all but you can see the intermediate backing wedges, between each of the mini jaws, so the string of mini jaws floats between the wedges, and the screw keeps them from getting too far apart, or can be backed out to allow more "float"

The jaws are kept from falling out with pin projections at the back side where the back angles intersect. Not really a pin but a round boss that projects past the top and bottom of the jaw back there, and the heavy sheet metal is bent to form a lip that catches them.

In the patent you posted he says he is improving upon the earlier ones (1915 & 1916) and applying them to vise jaws. The 1915 patent seems related to the little jaws and wedges between them only he was using cylinders instead of wedges. Here's a quote from the patent:

"The devices for applying pressure disclosed in these patents comprise in general a casing slotted lengthwise and containing a plurality of contacting devices arranged in line within the casing and so shaped that when they are moved in the direction of the length of the casing, certain of them will be caused to project through the slotted opening and thus apply pressure upon two surfaces between which the device may be placed. 1 L

It is an object of the present invention to improve the construction of the devices of the above-mentioned. patents in order to adapt them particularly for use upon the jaws of vises of ordinary construction to hold articles which can not be readily clamped between the usual parallel jaws."

A smaller version of the adjustable jaws. Outlawmws jaws might be missing one tooth.

I was about ten minutes away from this at a gun show. A friend called me about it but I was too late also. Not an old one but the price was right.

Merry Christmas everybody !

No it's not. I had the adjusting screw all the way in; when adjusted out the jaws fill the space you see. this works on wedge backs working against wedged spacers/adjusters, and with 5 facing jaws simply requires more "working space".

Not much exciting here but I haven't posted in "vises of Garage Journal" for so long I thought I better make sure I can still do it. Below is 2 matching Columbians except the first one was made in China. I picked it up at the scrap yard and the second is a made in USA one that I picked up at a local auction. I sold the China one at an auction after I cleaned it up and I gave the USA vise to a friend to give to his son in law for Christmas. There sure was a difference between the quality of the two. You can even see it in the pictures. The USA one I lettered and the China one I left all red. Anyways, I cannot wait until Christmas break. I have a Wilton 9450 and 4 Chas Parkers in the que for re-do and I hope to do at least 2 of them over break along with a ton of other stuff in my barn!
Take Care,
Greg

Super clean little Reed 103R 3" from 1952 passing through. Very lightly used and in great shape. Sage Green is the color. Great vise. Reeds always make me wish I had a spot for them.

Thanks toomanytoyzz. The paint is Rustoleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2x Coverage Gloss Sage Green 249094. (That's a mouth full!) Although I prefer matte finish paints the gloss isn't too overbearing here.

Nice score on that pickup, should clean up nicely for you I hope. :)

Just scored an awesome vise from Craigslist. Made in England. I have to clean it up, maybe even strip it and repaint it. Super solid:rocker:

Balane, That Reed looks a LOT bigger than just 3"! Came out nice!
Thanks! You know, it looks like a miniature big vise in person if that makes any sense. It's so small that it kind of messes with your perception at first. It's really a cool one that should fill a specific niche need very nicely.

As in Rustoleum Sage Green? I picked up a can from some other pictures like this one showing a sweet light green, but my results seem to be more dark/olive.

?

In any case, very nice resto.

I need some advice on pipe jaws. I just got an Oswego 78 in pretty rough condition, but savable. It's missing one of the pipe jaws. Fortunately, the one it's missing is the single jaw in the dynamic jaw. The other, in the static jaw, is a double cast in one piece and would be dramatically harder to duplicate.
I can bandsaw the missing jaw, using the existing one for a pattern, but out of what? I have steel thick enough - salvaged I-beam, and I also have cast iron I can cut from an organ donor slide generously provided by KMScott. Which would be the better choice? And is there an easy way to tell whether the existing jaw is cast iron or cast steel? I don't mind grinding a bit off the back if the spark test would be conclusive.

KMScott's donor has now rescued two good-sized vises - the Oswego, and a Yost no. 1. They're at the welding shop waiting to have the patches welded in. Yeah, I chickened out. I've only got torch and stick, and middle of winter is no time to be experimenting with cast iron in the unheated garage !

I expect there's a MIG or TIG in my future, once I decide which is better for me.

Here it is. 1945!

That is actually really cool. War year production papers are rare for Craftsman. They never released an 'official' power tool catalog from 1944-1947 (at least not to my knowledge), assuming that they were too busy with Uncle Sam.

Then something like this is found and new models discovered. Right on!

I have some of the Rusto Painter's Edge in Sage Green, and its appearance is quite variable, especially in pictures. Odd stuff - it looks more greenish or bluish, lighter or darker according to the light source. Indooors, out, cloudy, bright - it changes.

Yep, in the garage light it appears olive in nature. Kinda a bummer. I love all the pictures people post of this color and it looks funky actually in the shop:lol_hitti
