Hi, well, just that. I'm planning to use it for wood and metal but i'd also like to use it in concrete. It's for a home use, but i prefeer to buy something good.

What's the best opcion? a drill? a rotary drill? a "small" rotary hammer?

And, what's a brand for this things? Here i can get Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt and maybe some Metabo or Hilti.

Thanks

If you drill into concrete you almost necessarily want a hammer drill. People on here always recommend milwaukee so I'll default to that answer as a bang for the buck answer. If you use it a lot just get whatever has the best retail warranty or at least quick warranty (within a day or two). Don't know if that excludes hilti; not sure about their system.

I have a corded rotary hammer drill from Makita. Boy did that thing take care of concrete with a good Bosch bit. Drilled 2" into 40 years old extremely hard concrete with ease

Pretty poorly. You'll probably dull your bits and/or break them w/ the hammering on steel.

Get a hammer drill, most (if not all) allow you to switch off the hammer function.

Hm, I was just getting ready to start a new topic on this, funny. A recent thread on gun-safes has inspired me to get mine bolted down to the (concrete) basement floor. Also my new shop has concrete block construction and I'd like to be able to get stuff mounted on the walls etc so I've been pondering picking up a hammer drill.

I have Porter Cable 18V cordless of everything, so if I go cordless I'd want to stick with that to avoid having to get all new battery etc.

But I'm not averse to going corded for this use; I expect it will be something that rarely gets used as I have gotten by fine with my standard drill for quite a while.

Thoughts on these?

Another option is the local pawn shop often has specials on power tools, but I'm not sure about a used hammer drill, seems like they probably live an abusive life..

And i see most rotary hammers come with the sds plus or a similar siystem. Is it good? I have a lot of bits, but they're the "normal" ones. Are they compatible with the sds plus?

I prefeer the corded tools, i suposse it's beacause of the battery lifetime. The corded porter cable looks good.

I've had very good luck with my "outdated" 18v DeWalt XRP Hammer Drill. Used it in a professional setting for awhile and mounted a warehouse full of of pallet racks with it (good bits help too). I was surprised with the battery runtime considering the work. Held up well.

You do not want an SDS chucked rotary hammer for drilling anything but masonry.

You need a regular hammer drill with a regular 3 jaw chuck that allows you to turn off the hammer function. One with a 2-speed gearbox would be a big plus.

Well, i've been thinking about it and i'm deciding between this models:

http://www.metabo.com.ar/Catalogo-herramientas-electricas.24112+M5cbfdd307f2.0.html

http://www.dewalt.com.ar/productos/cata/listProdDeta.asp?prodID=DWD024

http://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/corded/5376-20

http://www.bosch-professional.com/gb/en/gsb-1600-re-11363-ocs-p/

Sorry, some links are in spanish, but i couldn't find the same models in english.
I like Bosch and Metabo, this one it's not as powerfull as the Bosch, but it seems to have a more efficient motor.
By the other side, the Milwaukee offers very good features for it's price.
What is the best?
Thanks

I went today to the tool store, I wanted to buy a milwaukee, bigger than the one i posted, but it was out of stock.
They had a simillar dewalt, the milwaukee 5376 and the metabo 561. I was between the milwaukee and the metabo. The milwaukee was cheaper and had more power, but i bought the metabo, just because it was metabo (both are made in china, but i suppose metabo has better quality).

Just that, it works very well, it's a small drill but its fine for a home use, i think it would last for some time.

Used this drill for 8 years or so. I used it mainly to mix mortar for tile jobs with. Its a beast. Its a two hander for sure mixing mortar!! Will break your wrist one handed.
Survived much abuse. Im a terrible tool abuser. I admit it.

I bought a Metabo hammer drill at a garage sale for $5---it says "Germany" on the label.
