does any one make a speeder bar shaped extension or an offset extension such that two could be put together to make the shape of a speeder bar. Have speeders but never use them as they are bulky and never make it into the rotation. Would like to have something smaller with capabilities of similar function.

:headscrat I don't think that would work extremely well for any significant amounts of torque. Just to make sure I have the correct picture, you are talking about a standard speeder bar, but add a female drive square where the rotating handle on the end would be?

Yeah, I think he needs to draw us a picture. I can't "see" what he's trying to say.

Off topic...On a very dead day, one of the guys lost a bet and has to use a speeder for some Volvo valve covers. We all had a good laugh. To this day, that's the only time I've seen anyone in my generation use one.

That actually sounds like something that could be useful to me. Ratchet the fastener loose until there's no bite left then speed handle it out or vice versa going on. I hate using the speeder, but when I'm stuck removing airframe panels or the like, my wrist loathes screwdrivers/ratchets.

snap on did make ratcheting speeders and you can still get small ratcheting mechanisms to adapt breaker bars etc so could use one of those on a speeder gandle

Would a roto ratchet work for those? For things that are really low torque once you break them free, you can spin them pretty freely and they seem to be a lot easier on my wrist than a nut driver. I don't have a sweet zyklop like in the video, but they have a different sort of extension that should help. See 2:40.

Would this combo work? The other one is a ratchet head for a breaker bar.

That's exactly what a MAC Spinflex does, it's a flexhead ratchet with a rotating handle that can be locked or unlocked and can then be used like a mini speed brace.

^^ I like those, but those force me to use that ratchet. If it were an extension, I could use whatever ratchet I wanted to. It's really a neat, simple concept.

Though, unfortunately, as much as I'd like it, I can't practically use one at work anyways since I can only use issued and etched tools. I don't have as much use for something like that at home...

Sorry for sidetracking your thread a bit OP :)

I have one that is exactly like you describe. I think it is a Blackhawk 1/2" drive. I will have to look when I get home from work. It might only be about 8" long.

I use speeders for things like access panels, oil pans and trans pans all the time. They work great in low torque situations where there are lots of the same size fasteners.

Yes accurate description. Would also work for me to have a joint at the place where the handle is on a regular speeder. If that was the case it could be used like the demos that they have on indexing gear wrenches with a ratchet on the end.

Really what would work would be any extension that extends sideways from the ratchet rather than axially out of the drive. 2 of these and a standard extension could make a speeder, and just one would make a indexing type deal to potentially get around obstructions.

Not seeing myself using it often, would just like to have another option available. Have tons of extensions but none of them go sideways with any offset. Unsure whether there is any real world application for it, just a way to justify buying more stuff.

I'm well familiar with what's out there as far as ratchets with a speeder handle or rotohead ratchets. Use wera zyklops as my go to ratchet in the field and can't imagine this setup doing any better than that performs for speeding off nuts that are already broken free.

one place where a speeder can really shine is installing spark plugs in alloy heads where the spark plug is deeply recessed as the added length and balance helps prevent cross-threading

Let's say for the sake of argument that you didn't have a battery impact or a screwdriver but you had a speeder with the correct socket/bit, would you use it then?

Yes. When I was building vintage motorcycies a 1/4 and 3/8 speeder were part of my tool kit and got lots of use at the track.

Also T-handles, which I actually prefer in some situations.

I often use a 1/2 inch speeder when changing tires on my truck at home because I don't feel like firing up the air compressor and I don't have a battery 1/2 inch impact.

I like speeders in general, but in most professional "flat rate" situations, they are not the fastest way to get something done.

Alright then, just making sure you aren't part of the anti-speeder crowd.

Almost sounds like you are looking for a crows foot extension. The problem with having a female drive on the handle end of the speeder is the way the torque is going to be transferred though the offset handle and into the bottom straight portion. Anything significant for a drive size will cause it to spring up pretty good. Hence the one Snap Mom posted has the ratchet below the offset handle in order to get 100% torque transfer into the fastener.

How about a standard speeder with a ratcheting adapter on the end and make up a custom yoke that would fit on the offset handle of the speeder to use for high leverage when needed :dunno: It almost sounds like you want to combine a ratchet a speeder and a breaker bar all in one.

I think I'd just heat up and bend a long extension if you really want/need one.

.

What is the make or name of those curved extensions in the picture. I'm thinking that would be the way I would go.

Honestly don't use speeders that much, just like having a lot of gadgets around and putting them together in various configurations.

Definitely wouldn't do well with high torque or anything, just figured it would be interesting to try if they make the extensions.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

See the 4th ratchet from the top in this pic. I use that as a regular ratchet then it flexes up to mimic a speeder.

not sure, will have to look it up when I get home. I got it with a bunch of other tools. Never saw one like it before and almost tossed it into the junk box until I used it once. Now it's on my cart!

Ok, it says popular mechanics Taiwan 94195 cr-v. Seems pretty high quality and the tooth count is around 45.

Maybe something simple like this Stahlwille 1225? I'd imagine this could be used kind of like a speeder when a ratchet is attached to it. The ratchet would move in a circle due to the offset on the extension.

Who knows?
Very interesting thread. There's a lot of oddball ratchets and other tools I haven't seen before.
I would also like to know the make and model of the half moon adapters.

Mickey,

The Craftsman ratchet in the pic above, whats the model number? I've been looking for one locally, without luck, so I guess I'll need to start searching eBay. Thanks!
