Ideal garage space to restore farm tractor?

A 2N is a pretty small tractor, a 2-car garage would be plenty. Realistically, you might find yourself spending a serious amount of time in the driveway with it between degreasing, sandblasting, and painting.

2 car garage will do fine, unless extensive tear down is needed, like splitting at clutch housing, rear end or engine work. Even those can be done within the confines of a normal 2 car garage, if you utilize space efficiently.

You could easily do a ford in a 2 car garage. The biggest pain on tractors is some of the parts get pretty heavy. Go for it.

If you are organized (I am not!) you could get away with one stall but you will be moving stuff all of the time which can get old real quick. A CLEAN workbench will help but if you are like me, it will become storage space!!
The 24x40 garage I built that my realtor claims is a three car garage quickly filled up with other stuff to the point that now I'm thinking about building a pole barn out back for the car, truck, mowers, tractor etc because even without all of the junk, tools, equipment, freezer, benches, shelves etc, my toys would not all fit in the garage unfortunately. I read on a post here years ago to try to build as big as you can afford because you will always need more space. That's sage advise because once you have a shop you will find a dozen things to do in there and will need room for several projects at once. At any rate, I have worked in a few shops and the one thing most productive shops all have in common is the need (read space) to leave everything lying for the next shift/work day. It's a bummer to have to pack up all of the gear just to be able to get to the freezer without tripping on everything. I'm carrying on about it too long, but go for as big a space as you can... if you can build a shop just for one tractor project you can build one twice as big and overhaul the (insert project here) while waiting on parts for the 2n. I hope I made a decent point. Thank you.

A 2n would easily fit in a standard 2 car garage. You could completly rebuild it there if you wanted too. What I want to say is about height. If you up grade to a newer compact, those have roll bars. I would figure minimum 8' doors so you don't have to flip the bar down every time. Go 10' tall at least for a tractor shed.

I'd suggest starting with a 60x100', but make sure you situate it on the lot to allow for another building in the future. Why?? Cuz once tractor fever sets in you're gonna need the room. My dad has it, he's at something over a dozen tractors now, I was there over christmas and he had 2 that I hadn't even heard about yet.

Dad's new shop is only 28x32x12, built specifically for this hobby, could easily get 3-4 tractors in it, but he has another 54x60 building for storage. Only tools and the current project goes in the new shop.

One of those small Fords won't take a lot of room. My dad and grandpa did a few rebuilds on an 8N in one stall of a dirt floor barn.

The old Ford is about the size of a Pinto. I have a 58 Ford 661 and grew up on it. Dad bought it in 59. They are easy to wwork on and will last for decades have fun.

If you put it on stands and remove the wheels/tires and sheetmetal, you'll find a little bitty tractor under there. Stack the wheels and sheetmetal in the back yard until you're ready for them. I could comfortably do an N series restoration in a single stall garage if I needed to.
Cool thank you everyone. Sometime down the road I would definitely like to buy a house and build pole barn that's 42' wide by 70' deep 16' tall ceilings. To have a loft 14' wide by 46' long on the left side. On the front of the barn, on the right side would be a 18' wide garage door by 14' tall. On the left side toward the back of the barn would be a 12' wide by 14' tall garage door. The only windows I would have are on the garage doors. The only other item in the garage beside the tractor would be my 25' Baja boat.

Your Dad has an impressive collection of tractors. Good thinking on his part of building another garage for projects only.

He's 74 years old and finally has a heated dedicated shop with actual insulation, real lighting etc. First time he's really been able to work in the dead of winter because he wants to, not because he has to.
Mom keeps saying he should have had it years ago, I think because it keeps him out from under her feet.
He's got a 1930-something Allis Chalmers WC all stripped down in the shop now. Had to have that one because it was the first tractor he ever drove, starting a lifetime of farming.
