Free is about the right price for that vise. It appears to be one of the pot metal import vises. If you need a vise it will function for a little while. Bolt it down and beat on it until it breaks. Not a high quality vise but good for free.

My first thought was rusty, early model HF swivel...but hey free is free.

If it works, clean it up, lube it and use it.

We'll ignore the request for suckage.

pop it apart, attack the rusty moving parts with a wire wheel on the bench grinder to get everything moving smooth-ish:)...put back together and use til ya find something better.

You can clean up the rust from the moving parts on a bench grinder pretty quick, i wouldn't even mess with electrolysis on it. imho i wouldn't bother with any re-painting or anything either. She's crude, but free is free...use her up!

The current crop of HF vises are not as good as that one. I have one and I use it as a welding vise. Works good as it holds round stock and rotates to any angle. No need to beat on it until it breaks, it will serve you well for years in normal use.

This^^^ I would NOT advise stripping the finish off (which an E-bath will do)...

Here's why;

Well I was able to get it apart and started cleaning it up. The only thing I haven't got a part are the silly set screws that hold the pipe jaws. I thought about an electrolysis bath but it seems to be going okay with a knotted wire brush on my grinder. What should I use to lube it up and what kind of paint / coating to prevent rust?

Got the silly set screws out. I'm going to replace them with regular bolts. I need to get some new screws for the jaws and and the back cap as the are boggered up. Its an Olimpia Tools brand. For the price I'm going beat until it breaks.

For a beater workhorse, it's hard to beat "machinery grey" Its made by near everyone, really does not require primer, and is pretty durable. I painted my Parker with it near 30 years ago and after countless showers of every sort of garage chemical, a ton of work and getting hit in the fray countless times by files, hacksaws, parts, wire brushes and wheels, is still about 80% there... :dunno:
